With respect, VAA, I will share my opinion with you.

In the past (I feel old as I write that), there was a certain amount of good natured ribbing and such as well as vehement arguments, deep discussions, even self-righteous posturing. While the good ole days weren't perfect, the name calling and personal attacks, ad hominem arguments were kept to a strict minimum. That is no longer the case. Sadly, a few folks utilize this particular method on a regular basis. Frankly, although they are kept hidden by a number of posters, the tenor of the forums has changed because of that. The focus has altered to become more and more responding to those attacks. The sheer volume of the ad hominem arguments makes it a challenge, I'm sure, for the moderators to keep up. Short of banning a few of the worst culprits, I'm not sure what else can be done.

best wishes to you and yours,
sunshine

Hi Treasure,

I don't think any sort of ranking concept per person is necessary for this board but more so i honestly don't believe people would use it in the way it should work, they would instead make it personal and a popularity contest as to whom can get their friends "validation" rating up high so they are all considered good advisers and can use it to act as if their advise is more than someone's they don't like.  Sorry but that is what i see many of the regulars using such a system because that is what seems to happen now in threads when bandwagons start etc and the little crowds who run into threads to join the ruckus.

To me, you also  can't rank PEOPLE as advisers on a message board like this because of the anomity, all that is given on this board is opinions.  I realize people want and need validation but if that is the case then the nicknames should be deleted and only real information about the people used -- that is what newbies need -- not anonymous nicknames on a message board like this.

Now, i could see POSTS having a ranking system but not posters.  Let the newbies draw their own conclusions by seeing the rankings of posts.  We shouldn't have to point it out the popularity of anyone whether its a friend popularity or a knowledge popularity, that to me is too much like hey listen to this person but not someone else.  If we want this to become a professional website for advise then it should be noted as such.

This way, when people read a thread and read a specific post, they can see if people like the actual post and it would have nothing to do with the POSTER hopefully.  I also believe posters on these boards would shove in newbies faces how dare they disregard such an "starred" adviser on this board and agree with someone else.   It happens NOW.

Based on anomity, i don't believe any poster here is more or less knowledgeable, more informed etc, we are all here simply giving opinions.  However, certain posts can be looked at with a majority thought this opinion was good and it's something to consider, NOT ranking the poster but ranking the individual posts and allowing the newbies to be able to draw their own conclusions if they wished.

This will i think put the pressure on the posters to give good posts  -- rather than having validation as an anonymous nickname on an anonymous message board.

And if the threads become one wherein people believe it would be a good thread for newbies to read beause of the posts that have been given good rankings, then throw it up into the FAQ.  Also, i think ranking the poster based on posts would not be an equal concept as many people simply post more than others and so based on that proportioning of course some posters will "seem" like they have more ranking but instead all they do is post more so they have a higher percentage of posting "good" advise at some point, versus someone who doesn't post a lot and so they seem based on the ranking to be less of a good adviser.

Ranking individual posts yes, giving credit for that to the posters in some validation concept --- no, there are too many variables that would not make that "validation credit for good advice" accurate.  I also believe newbies should be allowed to make their own conclusions. We can give them certain information -- such as show them how posts are ranked but i think they need to be able to make their own decision as to whom they see as good advisers.

Hope this makes sense, i am working on coffee.

I am not in favour of any ranking but if such a thing were to be created, ranking specific posts rather than the person posting would be advised.

Quite often a poster I do not particularly care for, makes a splendid post. I do like to acknowledge that I appreciate the post. It does not mean I think any more or less of the person that wrote it.

Ohh and i did want to mention, i don't think the Master and Mistress forums should be combined.  To me, it would cause a lot of confusion because i really do think things are perceived differently based on men and woman no matter if they hold the same position over different people.  If that makes sense.

There is a reason men are from mars and women are from venus.  grins.   Keeping it separate i think allows for the different perceptions to be expressed in a more contained environment.

Treasure is sleeping in this morning, but I wanted to clarify:

Her recommendation is to rank posts, not posters.  See her comments in Post 349,

Firm

edited to add: ok, but that would also rank the poster.

hmmm, I do not think it should "rank" a poster, either, but the search function should allow you to search for a poster's "most liked" post.

I would have let her clarify, but was assuming this thread will be soon closed.  If she gets up, and is interested, and it's still active, she'll give her own view.I was going by what we discussed off-forums.

Hi Firm,   -- opps lol the below was made before i read your edit.

quote:

  • I'd like to see some kind of "ranking" system for posters to help identify those posters who provide the best advice.  Ranking probably isn't the best word for it, but gets the idea across... something like earning your leathers.

Anyway, the best way I can think to do this is to allow specific posts to be rated (maybe just a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down"), and the poster's ranking would increase with the number of well rated postings they make.

I say specific posts, because I feel that posts made in the Polls, Humor, Off-Topic type threads shouldn't count.  Having loads of readers give a thumbs up to a post agreeing that "so and so" is a hunky actor would skew the validity of the ranking.  Ratings should only be allowed in the forums where BDSM/DS/Health/Relationship type posts are made.

I am reading her post that the ranking of the posts go back and give the credit to the individual posters.  I've bolded what i am taking to mean she wants to give individual posters validation credit so to speak so individual posters are considered more advisers on the board than others.

She is using the voted upon post to somehow give a rating to a poster.  What i am saying is i don't agree with that.  I am saying rank posts only, and let people draw their own conclusions as to people.

If i am misunderstanding, and she only means to rank posts and not have that ranking somehow connected back to the poster, then we are speaking of the same thing.  But she seems to want to connect the post ranking back to the individual posters and give those posters some type of validation ranking.

I haven't read all of the posts so if she clarified later, then we are speaking of the same thing.

I wanted to add this also, and this is based simply on how threads many times seem to go when going to trainwrecks and people run in to bitch at one poster and the friend bandwagons that occur.  All someone has to say is "so and so blah blah blah"  all negative about a poster and indicating people don't know what they are speaking about etc and suddenly their friends (much like the bandwagons that happen on this board) run in to "thumbs up" such a post that is negative about someone.

grins wouldn't we have to get the search function working in the most basic form before asking it to do something so complicated as pulling up specific posts of a poster.

I'm not in favor of ranking anything. I think it would cause people to not say what they really want to say for fear that their ranking might fall. I don't think anyone needs anymore judgment than we're already getting in our lives. It's hardly like it is on Facebook, where a bunch of your "friends" can support or like a statement. This is the big, scary internet where any strangers who might only be half in their right mind could publicly judge you and/or your posts. I don't need that kind of pressure!!!!

I hadn't thought of it from that angle. I know I certainly do not want anyone with a valid point to be any more afraid of posting their thoughts, than they already are.

I enjoy reading posts that opose my mindset. Especially when they are intelligently written and presented in a way that gives me an ah ha moment.

Not unlike the one here that I've attached to. I didn't love the ranking idea but not for the reason above. I just think it's kinda silly. The post above gave me an 'ah ha' moment......I hadn't thought of that because it is outside MY thought process. I doubt it is news to anyone that I don't care if people think my posts suck and wax poetic as to why. Half the time I actually get a laugh out of it. Unaware just totally makes my day when he trash talks me, for pure entertainment value on my part. I forget that there are people that actually find it hurtful or scary.

Thanks Kaliko for reminding me.

Irrelevant to the issue. Appearing impartial has nothing to do with being openly and obviously impartial.

I am strongly opposed to any kind of rating or ranking system for people or threads that is based on the personal opinions of others. It sounds junior-highish, and will open the door to all kinds of (more) criticism about cliques and favoritism, and will be another tool for those wanting to be obnoxious and stir up trouble. I don't see any reason to have one. I'm perfectly capable of judging whether or not I think a post is good or bad, and I'm all about letting the others who read it form their own opinion, too. And frankly, I don't care what rating a post might have. I'll decide whether to read it or not based on the name of the topic and, in some cases, who wrote it. I don't feel that we need to micromanage so much that we have to give it ratings.

Another forum I was involved with had a "hot" topic flag that would pop up after a post had received a certain number of views or responses in a certain period of time. It also bumped that thread topic to the top of the list and kept it there. That I don't have a problem with.

The bit I bolded is exactly my thoughts also.

Sort of a, why???

We already have more than enough ego stroking around here. It's the main reason I tend to avoid the Random Stupidity section.........because it is a lot of random stupidity.... TO ME. I can only read so much gag inducing "you are so special, you are so cool, you are so hot" posts without doing what the photo Heather posted somewhere this morning, is doing. They reek of "I am so insecure I need my other insecure internet friends to tell me how awesome I am!" and I am doing my own level best to not need that in my life.

okay i completely agree with what has been said by windchymes and LaTigresse.  They both have hit on many reasons i don't agree with a ranking system especially of people.

Hmmm.... I was thinking more along the lines of the existing ranking system here in the fora.  Right now we are already ranked, in a matter of speaking, by the number of overall posts made.  How many people post about how to get rid of the vanilla designation and start earning paddles or handcuffs?

We also do already have a popularity type of designation showing on profiles, as well.  Popular posters have personalized comments placed under their name.  And how many people have comments in their sig lines saying how many NZ points they have, or honorary titles bestowed?

I still don't really see a formal ranking of posters as something that would cause a problem.  But rating just posts is good.

Actually, Treasure, anyone can have a fancy title now, you have only to ask an admin!

Our sig lines are really proof of that pesky friendship-building, aren't they?
