How about the option to nominate threads or posts for "the best of the forums" (like best of craigslist)?

We already have shunshinemiss' quote of the day. And didn't Pahunkboy once award a best post of the day?

There should be a limit (daily) on how many threads you can start.  It's RIDICULOUS the # of bull hockey threads that are started just for the sake of starting one.  One weekend the total count was 25 by the same poster.

That's where the payments can be put into play...if you're a paying member then you'll have unlimited posts, non paying members are limited.

First I’d like to take a moment to once again mention that one of the things I love about these forums is that they are the best designed forums I have ever encountered. Easy on the eyes, easy to navigate… kudos to the layout designers.

I have no gripes with the moderation of these forums… except of course that one time when I was moderated most unjustly.

I too would like to see humor be its own section. You used to be able to go the humor section and see lots of great stuff (most of the time) but now new humor tends to get pushed down by all the ten thousand page chain threads (e.g. “I admit…”)

I would also like to suggest that the OP have (outside of moderators) full control of the title of their threads. In other words, subsequent posters would not be able to change the title. Aside from my own recent (and less than stellar) experience in playing with this feature, it has led to some nasty snark wars. It can also be confusing if you see the title as one thing and then go looking for it but can’t find it because it now had a new title.

Some comments on other people’s ideas:

Heather McLeather said: You'd do better to make Hanners a mod, she pretty much hates everybody equally.

Oh my fucking God! I don’t fucking want to fucking imagine what that fucking reign of fucking terror would be fucking like!

LadyPact said: I believe threads that are three months old should be locked. If a person wants to "update" a thread, they can write a Mod about opening it. I'm thinking it would cover such things as the OP who wrote the original to tell people how their problem worked out, those who wanted to update actual news of how court cases were decided, etc. Otherwise, if the last post is three months old (not talking about the games and such here that stay alive regularly) there's no bumping it. (The three month rule has been covered on threads several times, but the FAQ section says six months. Should be changed to three.)

I am opposed to locking off threads that have been inactive for a while… sometimes it is fun to revisit an old thread, especially if recent events make it relevant again. Still I have been irked when I thought that someone who hadn’t posted a while was back because I hadn’t realized that it was a resurrected thread (and once I was freaked out when it looked like someone had returned from the dead). I’ve made this recommendation before and I reiterate here: Any thread more than three months (or six or whatever) old will have a symbol (e.g. a ghost rising from a grave) to indicate that it is a resurrected thread.

ChatteParfaitt said: I would like to see an enforced rule that you must make a certain number of posts before you can start a new thread.

I am opposed to this. I think. If you mean that a newcommer to the threads would have to make so many posts before being allowed to start threads, then I would be opposed. I understand how irksome it can be when someone’s first post is a five thousand word warning of the international Jewish/Space Aliens conspiracy to subvert Christian civilization by putting fluoride in our drinking water… but truth be told, they don’t come up that often and I see no reason to restrict someone just because they are new to the boards. These are forums, not a club where you have to prove yourself before being granted full membership.

On the other hand, if you mean that everybody has to make so many posts in between starting threads, well...

And: I would like to see stricter moderation on those who create threads b/c they have nothing better to do.

This I do agree with. A limit of five (or seven or whatever) threads per day is more than reasonable. The only thing more irksome that long warnings about the international Jewish/Space Aliens conspiracy is fifty such warnings. The idea that a certain number of posts be made in between threads would certainly cut this down some (except, of course, for the truly dedicated) but I think that a simple limit would be better than forcing people to make posts they don't really want to.

First, I like the Fast Reply suggestion.

The "Dead Zone"...not so much.  One persons "moronic" is another persons daily bread.  As a "for instance"...to me the "I Admit" thread is kind of moronic, yet there are a lot of people that really enjoy it.  If you don't like a thread just stay away...no one is forcing you to read it.  And one person's "whine" is another person's legitimate complaint.  Again, if you don't like a thread then just stay away.  Simple.

When it comes to "Ask a Master" and "Ask a Mistress", either combine them or make it "Ask a Male Dominant" and "Ask a Female Dominant".  A lot of the questions are asked hoping for responses from a particular gender, and there are certain participants here that get their panties in a wad because they feel like they are being left out.

Personally, I'd like to see the moderation go back to more like what it was a couple of years ago and get the name calling and...I'll say antagonism for lack of a better word...a bit more under control.  These days a lot of the threads look a lot like Jerry Springer re-runs, and if that was what I wanted I would go turn on my TV instead.  Just because this is a "kink" site doesn't mean things can't or shouldn't be done in a civilized manner.

I see some of the posters have said that they would like to see more new people in the forums.  So would I.  But all too often I see new people come here and ask a question, looking for a discussion, only to be told (often in ways that are not too friendly) that they should go search the archives (in other words, "Go away, we don't want to talk!), or to go read the FAQs (again, "Go away, we're too busy [too good?] for you!").  Or they ask a question or make a statement on some "kink" related topic (Imagine doing that on a kink site!) only to be called "wanker" and other various names.  Good grief people!...If a question or topic is beneath your dignity or something, then just don't respond!  No one is holding a gun to your head!

And lastly...for now...I do agree with one thing that has been mentioned already, and that is that the moderation often does not seem fair and equitable.  I often see what to me looks like some of the "favorites" getting away with things that others are often admonished (or worse) for, when they do the same or similar things.

That is something for the mods to deal with, I suppose.

I have been reading the forums for years, and only just started posting- I still have to fight myself not to run away every time someone confronts me on something, but I deal with that.
I just want to agree with what another person has said about starting new threads on old topics.
There has been a time or two I have started a thread, only to have someone link an old thread(sometimes several years old) on a similar topic, in their way effectively shutting me down. I have seen this happen to others as well. They often add a dismissive line about "been there, discussed that", that used to scare me off, and I have seen scare off other newer posters as well.
This is all well and good if all your looking for is information, but sometimes you want to actually discuss a topic, share a point of view or ask questions- if I just wanted to purely learn something I would go to wikipedia.

I would really ask the older people in the forum consider letting us newer people discuss things they already have, who knows we might have a new take.

A suggest regarding this is, allow users to "vote sticky" on a particular thread they like
I disagree, one forum I used to frequent had so many stickies that you had to go to page three to get to the new posts. I believe that the fewr the number of stickies the better. One or two (a guidelines/rules thread and a FAQ) is all any forum needs.

It irks me to no end when new posters ask a question & get that same response & in the next breath are told not to revive old threads! How the hell do you respond to "look it up but don't revive it".

Regular posters really do shred apart newbies for innocent questions/comments.  I've directed folks from the other side to the boards but I always tell them to approach with caution.  It's a good resource but the snark level is too high.  This has been ongoing, it's not a recent thing so mods please don't take offense.

I guess we could go back to the mod who acted as Hitler but that was definitely overkill, pulling every other post.  I like the moderation the way it is now, it's the snarkiness I can do w/o.  I cringe sometimes at posts directed at newbies.

Don't tell me it's a wanker, those are pretty easy to identify.

How about those regular posters just go ahead and start threads on the topics they would like to see discussed.

OK, this is the worst suggestion yet. A typically American "I'm better because I can pay" attitude. Institute this one and people WILL leave in droves, myself included, though I'd be inclined to deliberately swamp the boards with pointless threads from sockpuppet accounts, just for having such a dumb rule.

I say leave everything the way it is.

You get these same complaints about this website and every other website every few months. It's not a new thing that has suddenly cropped up. Every forum I've ever belonged to over the many years including this one, has these complaints....it's changed, we're losing posters, I wish the old ones would come back, blah blah blah.......

It'll pass as always and CM will survive.

Though in all honesty Suze, she would be an impartial and inflexible moderator, you know what its like trying to get her to even bend on an issue where she thinks something is against her rules, even if its in her interest.
