I think there was a post in here not long ago stating that illegal pickers in Calif. earned an average of $18 an hour due to being paid by "piece-work",  i.e. how much they were paid an hour for the production they accomplished.

Is this more of your infantile bull shit.
Can you imagine the line for a job that paid $18 an hour?

Easy solution in Alabama, round up all the high school dropouts and people with bogus degrees and start first with any welfare recipients.

Maybe you were "smokin in the boys room" durring history class but we outlawed slavery in my country quite some time ago.

That would be good for them, fresh air, exercise and they'd lose weight.

It would be good for you too. You will be part of the next labor levy.

Under extreme conditions we could import workers from China and India for say, 6 months at a time.

How unamerican. How bout we use some of your mantra of "supply and demand" and put u.s. citizens to work? Or don't you think u.s. citizens should be given first shot at these jobs you want to "outsource"...oh wait you would have to pay the american citizen something more to do what the illegals do now.

Mr. reading comprehension, the job doesn't "pay" $18 an hour,  that's the "average" wage if you work fast. If you work slow it could be $10 an hour. It's "piece work"
As for advertising they don't have to, it's all word of mouth.
And "$18 an hour" isn't very much, subsistence level these days due to inflation is about $15 an hour. I daresay that you make or made more than $18 an hour.
And extreme conditions means "full employment." Everyone wants to see Americans have jobs. If they have to work in agriculture so be it.
As for "cheap labor" the farmers don't ,...."pass along the savings to the consumer", *they put that extra money in their own pockets!* Do you think they're going to give it to you and me? Do you think they're going to use it to buy medical insurance for their employees? Of curse not, they rely on the Taxpayers to foot the bill for any medical/dental care. As they say, "there's no such thing as "cheap labor."
Ever see a sign in a supermarket saying; "Due to the goodwill of local farmers tomatoes will now be .59 cents a pound instead of .89 cents a pound."
Me neither.

My days of ag work are behind me.  I am neither unemployed or in danger of losing my house, or anything else.  I still don't see how it makes economic sense to not have people who need jobs do this type of work.  Illegal immigrants are a drain on social services.  I am not willing to pick up those costs.
I can't remember ever saying I would rather it rot.  I continue to believe there is another solution.
quote:

ORIGINAL: xssve

Sure xssve, you are probably right.  Let the tomatoes rot in the field because people who are not illegal immigrants are both too good and not good enough to do the job.  Meanwhile, these same people are losing their homes and can't feed their kids.  It makes no sense to me.
You said it, I didn't - you'd rather it rot than pay a Mexican do it, that's your priorities so get picken', I have a new line of work.

In other words, nobody's stopping you, so get to it.

There's a major problem with this whole concept of "hire the unemployed to do it." The farmers are paying these migrant workers off the books to do this work. They aren't paying Federal Income Tax, Social Security, Disability, Worker's Comp or any of the other myriad of things employers are supposed to pay when having someone on the books.

As for those citing some "statistics" that these workers are making $18 or even $10 an hour. Bullshit. Those statistics are wildly skewed. Many restaurants also have illegals working in the kitchen and on the face of it, looks like they are paid well. Until you factor in that they are actually working nearly 80 hours a week for their $600 bucks, not 40 hours. No breaks, no benefits, and typically half that money is paid off the books as well.

The minimum wage in this country is a joke. What is it? $7.25 an hour? All this talk of "if people are on welfare, or unemployed, they'll work for minimum wage." So a single mother on welfare goes to work for minimum wage. At 40 hours a week, she makes a big $290 BEFORE taxes. Even if you calculate that she has no taxes taken out, out of that $1,256 whopping dollars a month she is receiving monthly, she has to pay for child care. Anyone care to guess the cost of that? Let's be generous and say it is a school aged child, so the cost of "after care" or "latch key" program is only $75 a week. Of course if her kids are younger, you can practically double that amount. And don't forget, during the summer, that cost is going to increase for a full day program. So figure on at least $125 during the summer months weekly. Again, let's say she lives in an area with ample public transportation, so she has no gas, insurance, car costs. Still, the commute ain't free. To work with even numbers, we will say that costs $25 bucks a week. Just to work, it costs her $100 bucks a week. She now has $190 left a week. With that, she needs to pay rent, food, utilities. Let's say she shops really well, she is still going to pay $50 bucks a week to feed her family. Down to $140 a week for utilities and rent. Y'all realize that is $606 dollars a month for RENT and utilities, right? Of course, I also didn't factor in that no minimum wage job is going to completely pay for benefits if they offer them at all, so better take at least $100 bucks a month away from that $600 (and you ALL know that is being really generous on an insurance contribution). Now this woman is supposed to pay for an apartment for her and her one child with $500 bucks a month, plus utitilities? Thirty easy to electric. She has a kid, so has to have a phone. Cheapest "pay as you go" phones are still going to cost her $25 a month, so now she has $445 left for rent.

Anyone want to tell me where that woman is going to live? Because I know she isn't living in NJ, NY, or CA. She isn't even going to be living in FL, WA, IL, or even PA which is notorious for cheap housing.

It's real easy to say anyone who doesn't go out to work is lazy or just wants to live off the system. But in the scenario above, before this woman took that minimum wage job, she probably had medical benefits for her and her kid that she no longer qualifies for since she is working. She received food stamps and rent subsidies. She wasn't living well by any means, but she knew that if her kid got sick, she could take him/her to the doctor, get necessary prescriptions and be there to care for her sick child. Now she is working minimum wage, even if she has benefits, she has no money for the co-pay, and she will lose her job if she takes time off to take care of her child, who can't go to child care when sick.

It's easy to come up with solutions like those listed here when you are so out of touch with reality.

Lady, good post but you forgot lottery tickets, smokes and beer money.
Minimum wage (is) a joke. That's what the people in congress should be making.
Raise the price of tomatoes by .15 cents a pound and pay American citizens $25 an hour to plant and pick them. I don't begrudge anyone a good week's pay! That's what we need in this country, working people making good money. It's good for the economy!
As long as working and middle class people don't have money to spend on new cars, appliances, furniture and housing we'll remain in a recession.

First, I never said fat... you did.

Yes. If they are malnourished as you keep implying they cant work. We worked for a family that owned lots of little farms, strawberries, corn, beans, tobacco, there was also pigs, chickens and horses to be taken care of. A real working farm, family style. We all ate well.

http://unitedsc.org/2011/07/29/ala-workers-weary-of-immigration-law/

Emaciated, arent they.

More skeletons.

Too skinny for words

Ready for the hospital due to being so under nourished.

NOT

Those workers werent fat, they were plump, which is what I said. Far from emaciated, far from malnourished.

That isnt every case.. which is why I said "mileage may vary". Honestly, many come here because they are starving in their own homeland. Many come here to find places to work such as I described. Many find abuse.

Thats part of the problem with being illegal.... they dont know who to turn too when they end up in the horror farms. Yes, they exist. Are they the norm? Who knows? No one is reporting... because they are illegal and wont report.

quote:

Now you are a mind reader. I never said gaunt and malnourished. I said that those who do stoop labor are not fat and sassy.
So you are still full of shit and trying to back peddel your way out of having both feet in your mouth at the same time.

Aren't agriculturally (that is production tomatoes) pretty generally picked in the fall after school starts in CA?

Are we only talking about tomatoes? There are all kinds of crops that need to be harvested, at various times. My son just started school last week, so it varies, I think.

Ron
We grow shit all year long here in california.
There is a guy over in oxnard that has a greenhouse for tomatoes that is about 30' high.
Imagine how many tomatoes come off of a 30' tall plant. I was lucky enough to get a tour of the operation...totally awesome.

Mr. reading comprehension, the job doesn't "pay" $18 an hour,  that's the "average" wage if you work fast.

I am quite aware of what average means. And my statement still stands. Perhaps you could post up some link showing the validity of your moronic opinion.

If you work slow it could be $10 an hour. It's "piece work"
As for advertising they don't have to, it's all word of mouth.

As I said before if that is what they pay(word of mouth or ad in the morning newspaper), there would be a line a mile long with prospective employees.

And "$18 an hour" isn't very much, subsistence level these days due to inflation is about $15 an hour.

I think the poverty level for a single individual is about 18k which is $9.00 an hour.

I daresay that you make or made more than $18 an hour.

My fucking welfare checque is more than that.

And extreme conditions means "full employment." Everyone wants to see Americans have jobs. If they have to work in agriculture so be it.

Last I heard unemployment was about 10%...shouldn't be any shortage of workers at $18 an hour...I doubt you could get enough prospective employees to start a bridge game if the pay was what they pay the illegals.

As for "cheap labor" the farmers don't ,...."pass along the savings to the consumer", *they put that extra money in their own pockets!* Do you think they're going to give it to you and me? As they say, "there's no such thing as "cheap labor."

What they have now seems pretty cheap to me.

Ever see a sign in a supermarket saying; "Due to the goodwill of local farmers tomatoes will now be .59 cents a pound instead of .89 cents a pound."
Me neither.

About all I buy in the grocery store is coffee, flour and chocolate. Pretty much everything else I produce myself.

"Fat" is a pejorative. "Plump" isn't. (In fact it's even used as a compliment in some forms of internet porn.)

So it is OK with you if tomato farmers force slave labor on illegal’s so you can eat cheap tomatoes?

Why not Pay a decent wage …then legal migrant workers will come along with some locals… won’t you feel a little better biting into that tommytoe and paying a few pennies more?

Of course there are those who don't have kids.

However, you ignored my point that these wages are to the illegals are paid OFF THE BOOKS. So it doesn't do much if students, singles or others take the job to the unemployment rate.

In fact, the only thing it might do is increase unemployment fraud, since they likely would continue to collect their unemployment benefits while picking the damn tomatoes.

Actually, I didn't forget them. There is no extra money for them. I'm talking about reality, not people's vision of what is happening. That would include not only what you mention, but a new cadilac, flat screen tv and all that other good stuff everyone thinks these people are able to purchase.

The basic falacy in your arguement is that u.s. citizens don't have to put up with that shit. "you pay me my wages, you remit the witholding tax to the govt or I will send your punk ass to jail". If you are illegal they call the cops and deport you...Citizenship carries certain rights.

In fact, the only thing it might do is increase unemployment fraud, since they likely would continue to collect their unemployment benefits while picking the damn tomatoes.

Why do you assume that "they(fellow u.s. citizens)" would be of that criminal mindset?
Would you commit such a fraud?
