Our upper echelon politicos are often ridiculously paid, and the medical benefits! I think most people are accepting that some pain has to be taken but things are looking up if the international markets and the leaders in the EU (who seem to be sitting on their hands) don't pull everything down. One prominent Irish economist suggests that Greece will have to be thrown out of the EU before there can be any recovery!

Status: offline 		it would be better if the time wasted on Gaeilge was spent on teaching kids how to interact with the real world, give them interpersonal skills, give them a chance to talk and ask questions of each other and practice their social skills with one another, instead of shouting at them all the time and any time they open their mouth telling them to shut up or giving them punishment work as was done in my school, a complete violation of the first tenet of the Irish and American constitution which guarantees to every citizen kids included the right to speak and to be respected, something that is flagrantly violated by teachers and is seemingly is still going on judging by the rate my teachers website and the comments on same , some 15 years after i left

The EU has its advantages as a loose economic block of modestly sized countries but tighter and tigher integration was a bad thing, and it became self-sustaining because the institutions of Europe were too independent from soverign governments, and their interests lay elsewhere with greater union. Then the level of integration with the Euro currency wasn't sufficient when dealing with a crisis on the scale of the present problem...

Status: offline 		The EU is not a 100% bad idea, working together to create economies of scale makes sense, joint ventures make sense, but an array of mixed cultures with spotty past diplomatic relations and their own currencies? It should have stayed an umbrella, not a octopus, if that makes sense.

Apart from primary teaching, what other employer requires the candidate to have a knowledge of Gaeilge or an ability to speak Irish, they dont. So its a complete waste. At least the other would prepare kids for the real world and in case no one has noticed in the real world the language of business is ENGLISH, if money and effort wasnt wasted on Gaeilge to no purpose other than stress and resentment, nobody i know liked learning Irish,,kids resent it, so why impose a dead language on people in the full knowledge that it will be of no practical use in their future employment whatsoever, no much better to spend time preparing kids for work, give them interview skills, help them develop social skills, give them more freedom and throw out this anachronism that is of no relevance to 21st Century social and working life. Time spent on giving the kids the necessary skills to succeed in work would eliminate problems later on including mental health problems which all stem from stress and inability to fit in and would pay off for companies, who would get confident graduates and employees, whereas there is absolutely no economic benefit other than college points to learning irish

Status: offline 		We also could eliminate the issue of Irish being used for college points by scrapping this anachronism from the school curriculum. As a multi cultural society there would be no objection believe me. One of the major causes of friction for non national parents especially is that of their children being forced to learn Irish when they dont want to, why bring this aggravation on to others, move on, be pluralistic and live in the world of reality, which is that NOBODY but NOBODY speaks Irish or is interested in said language in Ireland

The tourism trade will. I spent some time in Ireland this summer. It isn't just in Connemara that Gaelic is spoken. It is the primary language in the Aran Islands. If you want to move to Innishmor, for example, you have to be fluent in it.

Just because you are too lazy to appreciate the education you have been given doesn't mean that education isn't important. Were you unable to pass your exams to get into university and now it is sour grapes?

So what? What case is there to prove? The fact that it is currently being spoken in the Aran Islands and in Connemara PROVES that it is not a "dead language" (which was your claim). English may be the MAIN language, but it is far from the ONLY language spoken west of Connemara.
