With all the fat threads we see around here, I hate to add one more to the onslaught, but I have noticed something about those that post or that I have known throughout life that dislike over weight people. Personally, I believe that people that make a big fuss about a persons weight seem to be less tolerant about many things in life and with people. From what I have seen, they tend to be real emotional OCD types, harsh, less compassionate than others, opinionated to the point of unmovable, regimented, superficial and sometimes insecure. I tend to just classify them as anal and whether I was skinny or not, I didn't want much to do with them.

Do you think my take on this has any merit from your own experiences?

My experience does match yours, Lockit.

I don't want to say anything so extreme that someone who disses fat is a bigot across the board, but I DO see that people who make judgements based on stereotypes are very willing to keep those stereotypes going, and run with the next set that they hear, whether it's that black folks are natural dancers, or that all Native people are drunks.

Lockit,

I call these people who dwell on, and are negative about overweight people a........ "BULLY"

No other way around it. Very childish and immature, and hopefully everyday we are curbing this, but as bullying has been around from the beginning of time, (even in the animal world)- IT IS A LONG HARD PATH TO MARCH AND BREAK!

Who we are attracted to and what we want in life is a choice... however, those that project their opinions about those they do not know and carry on with complaints, rude comments/insults aren't simply expressing their choice in my opinion. They seem to be doing something else. They feel they have the right to treat people with disrespect because of how they live or look and everyone should be ashamed if they don't live and look like they think they should, rather than move on.

Yes.

The "Walmartians" stuff you see on the internet is a good example. Since when did it become okay to laugh loudly and point? Evidtently it is okay to laugh at fat people, society's clowns. Sure, some of them are seriously appalling---the gal who didnt have a shirt but had her hooters tucked into her hiked-up pants? yeah.

Of course, most of that laughter is pointed at women.

Not really, it really depends. In my experience, almost everybody finds overweight people at least a little unattractive. I do, and I am not overly judgmental or intolerant, nor am I any of the things you mentioned (or at least I hope I'm not).

But if you are talking about the types of people who consider weight a valid measure of somebody's worth, then I would have to agree, but they are a very small minority, and like anybody who bases their interpersonal value judgments on physical characteristics, they are very shallow and I think underdeveloped in a personality sense. They tend to be childish in other ways as well as a result.

The standards they judge by are also very unrealistic, I know people who consider me fat because my tummy isn't flat and hard as a cutting board.

One man I knew used to say... Men should tie women that are fat, up to the bumper of the car and drag them down the road. He had no understanding, compassion or tolerance for anyone that was sick... his own race because he had been treated poorly because of it... was insecure about himself and YET, he wanted to do a fat chick.

Another was so focused on body shape that he looked like a Mr. Universe. Everything in his home with four kids, had to be in place and look amazing so that he wasn't embarrassed by surprise company and he tortured his wife if there was one spot or finger print on a faucet. He had a lot of road rage. He would not be friends with anyone that wasn't in a higher income bracket (or uneducated... but he worked a manual labor job that paid well). He imposed his perfected image even upon the children meaning they had to be prim and proper, clean at all times, couldn't play and get dirty or messy and had to be dressed to the tee. You should have seen his face when his wife gained five pounds and the rant that followed wasn't pretty either.

Maybe I have seen extreme situations... but I do wonder about some that must make comments, especially when they comment and run.

I find overweight people unattractive.
But I dont go and comment on it, nor do I pick them out of a crowd for any particular reason.

I have some friends for life that are very obese. I think they are awesome people, but visually I dont find them appealing.

I think people that actually go out of their way to degrade overweight people, need to get a life.

i think there's a difference between having an aesthetic preference and bullying. i don't find people who are too far at an extreme, either fat or thin, to be attractive. but i don't bully them, and i can like them as people. and of course, judgments of what is "extreme" are subjective, but there should be a fair dose of reality in there, too.
i'm sure i'm "extreme" to some people, while being "just right" to others, while being "not chubby enough" to others. =p

i do find that those who use stereotypes to judge people, or as the basis of worth, are likely to apply stereotypes (particularly negative ones) to other types of people, or other situations.
the basis of bullying is generally a reflection of some personal insecurity that the bully is projecting.
i think men who complain about larger women are "afraid" of how they will be perceived if they are "too close" to larger women.
on the flip side of that, there are men who just aren't attracted to larger women, but who don't feel the need to make big public statements about it.

Yeah, people who have an issue with overweight people piss me off. I'm pretty convinced this recent-ish "obesity crisis" is just a moral panic, anyway.

Most overweight people in my personal experience have attitude problems, low self-esteem, and an endless supply of excuses.

I'm sure it's a "thyroid" problem you have when you're munching down that McDonald's on a semi-regular basis and lounging around.

So what is the excuse of those that like to be rude to other people, whether their lifestyle/eating choices are good or not, whether they have a medical reason for whatever or not? What need motivates someone to come people bashing among strangers for the most part?

i dunno, i do think there is merit to it. while people of normal weight can have sleep apnea, many people who have it find that losing weight reduces it. diabetes, arthritis, hypertension, etc, are all problems that are associated with or exacerbated by being overweight.

i think it's okay to accept yourself at whatever weight you're at, while also striving to be healthy. size is not an indicator of health, but health can be compromised by size (at either extreme).

ANYWAY, this is not an "is chubbiness healthy" thread, so...

i think it's insecurity. they're insecure with their beliefs and need them validated.
or they're afraid to speak honestly among people they know, so they vent among people they don't know, and then skedaddle.

I prefer not to feed trolls. They might get fat. Then how would they fit under the bridge anymore?

Yes. Putting aside people's preferences for their OWN relationships, which they have every right to have, yes. Some people are naturally very image conscious and conformist, and that manifests itself in many different ways. It all boils down to what someone's core values are.

I don't like to be rude to people.  I like to be honest.  The honest truth is that many overweight people I have seen are simply diffusing their own lack of self-control by tacking it onto something else.  Be it medical, genetics, or that God hates them.

Oh, I can play too:  this is a topic for insecure overweight people to feel validated.

Excellent: "If you bring in an opposing view and state an experience that would lead to that view you are just trolling.  Fat people are beautiful and harmless creatures.  Troll."
