Do you think the biggest bias around here is for, or against, individual posters, instead of genders or orientations?

pam

yes.

yes, there is a certain segment of the members who are very fucking strongly biased against honesty if it goes against or challenges their fucking preconceptions.

Well, fuck, that's not where i wanted to go with this, but i'd have to agree. Don't know what to do about it, though.

Maybe, technically, "bias" is the right word, but it doesn't feel right to me used in these examples.

People get their feathers ruffled with honesty when it's presented in a manner which...well...ruffles their feathers. It's not the honesty....it's the delivery. Some people like to be rough and confrontational, some people like to be blunt and succinct, some people type up walls o' text. It's just what we respond to positively, I think, more than what we respond to negatively. So, a bias against honesty? No, but maybe just a preference for discussion in a certain manner.

And an inclination to respect or throw out the opinions of certain posters is based on one's experience reading that person's posts. I view a bias as being the responsibility of the person who is biased. I view someone who has ticked me off enough to not want to read their posts as the responsibility of said poster.

I disagree. Those same posts that ticked you off will seem brilliant to another, so the reaction is yours and yours alone, so the responsibility for it is as well.

Just sit back and listen to the fat lady sing. Folks, we have a winner :)

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Biases on collarme? (11/11/2011 9:18:27 PM)

Exactly, Kaliko. I have I think four people I cannot stand on hide. Those might have something cogent and/or worthwhile to say, but I'm willing to take the chance and miss it. It's really simple for me to avoid argument that way.

What I mean is, I'm not walking into the forum thinking "I dislike all men named Steven" and so therefore I disregard all of DarkSteven's posts. But if he were to tick me off, that is because of something he did, not because of something I walked in expecting to happen. Not that what he did is necessarily wrong in anyone's book, but it's my reaction to his specific words.

So..."responsibility" is probably the wrong word here.

And I adore DarkSteven...this isn't about him. :)

We can't like/agree with everyone, and not everyone can like/agree with us. The posters that I wish would just STFU might be someone's fave. It's on me to know wht I'm reacting to, their personality or their posting.

There are, and have been, people who are disliked by many...and they are persistent as fucking pantry moths.

HannahLynn -> RE: Biases on collarme? (11/11/2011 9:26:30 PM)

doubt it would fucking work, but i'm game to run the tests.

gungadin09 -> RE: Biases on collarme? (11/11/2011 9:34:45 PM)

Okay, so the consensus is there's intolerance and favoritism here, all around. Anybody think it's worse here than off the net? Worse than other websites?

pam

HannahLynn -> RE: Biases on collarme? (11/11/2011 9:41:19 PM)

not really, its just that here it comes out more. off the net you just don't fucking interact with the people who annoy you. that and here one interacts with whole segments that one wouldn't off the net. think about it, how fucking many 20 year old lesbians do you deal with regularly off site?

NocturnalStalker -> RE: Biases on collarme? (11/11/2011 9:50:00 PM)

I don't know, Pamela.  Somehow I doubt anybody here would tell me or another they dislike to, "fuck off."

gungadin09 -> RE: Biases on collarme? (11/11/2011 9:52:35 PM)

Okay, so maybe it's the fact that we're so diverse to begin with. i mean, any job i've ever worked, or any group i've ever been a member of, no matter how diverse, was much more homogenous than this one. Maybe it's just inevitable when you throw together so many people from all walks of life, with so little in common, that they eventually start going for each other's throats.

You know, i try to be unbiased. But i still filter what i say, and i can't say that i'm equally critical of everyone. i do pull my punches with certain people. i'm not Hannah.

On the other hand, i find that people here are more honest than in real life, as a rule. You don't have to tell someone to fuck off to be honest with them. Being a jackass and being honest aren't one and the same, and yes, i've even told people i like here to fuck off.
