Perhaps you should ask the hundreds of thousands of innocent stone age peasants that were subsequently carpet bombed?

If they knew, I'm sure at least one of them would have told you rather than be blown to bits.

The indiscriminate decimation of Afghanistan did more for extremist recruitment than any number of Osama videos.

I'm not going to directly address these points, but are you implying that the UK (or any other country) hasn't done the same thing at one time or another?

I won't specifically deny what you're saying, but it's the implied double standard that I object to.

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Questions for those in the UK (and elsewhere in the Anglosphere)) (11/15/2011 10:50:35 AM)

Afghanistan was & is as righteous a war as you will get IMO.

Retaliation intrinsically implies hitting back.
Afghanistan didn't hit the World Trade Center.

Then who did?
They were all Saudis, you fucking dopes - except one which was from the United Arab Emirates.

We were talking about why it was necessary to attack Afghanistan, and the leaders of the organization which plotted 9/11 were known to have bases and training facilities within that country. We weren't speaking of their nationality, but their physical location.

MadAxeman -> RE: Questions for those in the UK (and elsewhere in the Anglosphere)) (11/15/2011 1:34:31 PM)

And their physical location was the whole of Afghanistan?
What has anything Britain done throughout history got to do with why America carpet bombed Afghanistan?
You've admitted your ignorance in your question, you are now better informed.
Deliberate ignorance is shown in the unwillingness to learn and to attack the source of the information.
Why ask if you didn't want to know?
As said some pages back, quick to tears and lashing out when you don't get your own way. Thanks for perfectly illustrating the stereotype.
Like many Americans you don't even understand why 9/11 happened.

Muslims don't use casual insults for America.
They just call you 'The Great Satan'.
To them, that shows genuine fear and hatred.
Generations will learn from when still on the tit to hate America.
They are willing to die to take you out, or even cost the price of a jeep.
Sitting comfortably?

I am naked and oiled, and my buttocks are as polished alabaster.

Now that's what I call a decent derail.

Oh hurray!  Naked man is back!  Except didn't he call himself nudeman before? I hope he drops by the breastfeeding in court thread.

MadAxeman -> RE: Questions for those in the UK (and elsewhere in the Anglosphere)) (11/15/2011 3:31:28 PM)

That's going tits up too

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Questions for those in the UK (and elsewhere in the Anglosphere)) (11/15/2011 3:33:54 PM)

It is indeed.

It was within Afghanistan.

I did want to know, and that's why I asked. However, I also mentioned that I might have more questions as they come up. Perhaps you didn't see that part of my OP.

I wasn't really asking about Iraq or Afghanistan anyway. I was asking for more general, long-term views, not opinions on current events. I only responded in this vein because you chose to bring it up.

But since you brought it up, and since your views seem to be similar to other Brits I have debated with online, I would like to explore this issue further. For example, you deliberately evaded my question by asking another question: "What has anything Britain done throughout history got to do with why America carpet bombed Afghanistan?"

My question may not have anything to do with America bombing Afghanistan, but I was asking in the context of the main topic of this thread, part of which had to do with how Brits form the basis of their opinions about America. If you don't want to answer, then don't answer. It's no skin off me, and I'm certainly not going to fall into tears over it. I just wanted to find out how Brits perceive the world.

I didn't lash out at anyone, nor did I attack any source of information. I was merely asking for more information based on the information previously supplied in this thread.

I would also observe that your opinions about America appear to be based on misinformation, half-truths, and a very selective reading of history. This is not the first time I've encountered this, and part of the reason I posted this thread was to get further elaboration on this inexplicable phenomenon regarding the behavior of some Brits I have seen. Do you do this on purpose? Can you not see how it looks?

If you're just joking about all this, then please say so. I was looking for more serious answers, but if you're not willing to provide serious answers, then that's your choice. I like a good joke, too, but perhaps we can save joking for another thread.

What makes you say that? If you're implying that you understand why 9/11 happened, then please enlighten me.

Yeah, I've heard them say that. I don't care what our enemies say about us. I only wanted to know what our "friends" thought.

Well, it's not the first war we've been in, and it probably won't be the last. The world is not quite so simple as you make it out to be, and this includes the Muslim world.

Besides, I was asking about the views of people from the UK and elsewhere in the Anglosphere, not about the views of Muslims. Are you speaking on behalf of Muslims? Are you Muslim yourself?

I don't sit any more or less comfortably than I did during the Cold War.

Just how many things are you unsure of Sherlock?
I haven't the time to educate you.
Are you expecting me to answer each and every one of your questions?
Where have I used misinformation?
You thought the World Trade Center was bombed by Afghanistan FFS.
Read newspapers from outside the U.S instead of watching Fox News.
Be aware of the rest of the world and how it works.
A candle would enlighten you mate.
Eat more fish.

Well, there's really only one thing actually. As I said, I was looking for serious answers, but it doesn't look like you're willing to provide any.

It looks to me like you're just digging for excuses to bash America, and your position seems awfully one-sided when you sit over there and pass judgment. That's what I was wondering about. Where does it come from? The BBC? Perhaps some punk rock band? Please, let me in on the secret that I'm missing here.

As I said, if you don't want to answer, then don't answer.

I don't really expect much of anything from you at this point.

Well, for one thing, when you said this: "the Russians have been portrayed as cold war villains, plotting the west's downfall. Childlike. This juvenile clumsy propaganda doesn't play and has made America look dumb."

The Russians were Cold War villains, and you're trying to make it seem like they're not.

Then, there are these statements:

quote:

Perhaps you should ask the hundreds of thousands of innocent stone age peasants that were subsequently carpet bombed?

If they knew, I'm sure at least one of them would have told you rather than be blown to bits.

The indiscriminate decimation of Afghanistan did more for extremist recruitment than any number of Osama videos.

...

Retaliation intrinsically implies hitting back.
Afghanistan didn't hit the World Trade Center.

...

9/11 wasn't a bombing.
It was a hijacking, which also wasn't organised by the Afghani government.
The Afghani government couldn't organise a picnic then.
Afghanistan as a nation doesn't exist. It is a collection of individual tribes under minor warlords.
The American sanctioned Afghani government in 'power' now could just about organise a day out at McDonald's.

You thought the World Trade Center was bombed by Afghanistan FFS.

I never said any such thing.

I was about to give you similar advice.

quote:

Be aware of the rest of the world and how it works.

I am quite aware of the rest of the world. In fact, from what I can tell from this discussion we're having, it seems obvious to me that I have much more extensive knowledge of history and world events than you do. How does it feel to be bested by a "dumb Yank"? [;)]
