How could I not share?  Great points have been made in this topic, from what to look for in education & experience as well as intent.
Very important that you make it clearly stated that your submissive /masochistic choise/role is not corrupting, degrading, ruining or othrwise harming your social or work activities.
I am at this very moment in finals - Social Services/Mental Health major - My presentation is on Fetishism & Masochism, what fun! Even more so as I am a LifeStyle Domina.. the professor asked Me to take it easy on My classmates, youngsters mostly - so I hope to merely open their eyes to the difference between 'good healthy bdsm fun' and clinicaly diagnosable 'harm to self' activities.
My son is currently a member of the Seattle Pure Cirkus - http://www.purecirkus.com/ hook suspensions, body piercings, fire poi, juggling and more...it's PUBLIC!  so is that  RISK AWARE CONSENSUAL KINK?
Since you must stay with the same councelor, let him see the guidelines of the bdsm community as reviewed by Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe,_sane_and_consensual and have a simpler look at : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sadism_and_Masochism
Ask to look at the councelor's disclaimer -  you can report his behaviour /attitude or merely assure yourself that you are guarenteed another's therapy that suits you better.
And hey collagebeauty, it IS up to you - because it is a shared responsibility of treatment to help You. I'm still being supervised as I will for several more years, when I earn My license I'll be
one of the Kink Friendly ones!
Always the best Diva~Zya

It isn't engaging in bdsm behavior that is necessarily pathological.  Rather, sometimes bdsm behavior is the manifestation of some inner trauma.

In other words, a competent therapist will recognize it is why you do it, not so much what you do that matters most in dealing with emotional issues.

Often I run into people whose manic need to out-bdsm everyone is such an obvious open wound from some past episode, I just want to cringe.  I've learned that you really can't tell anyone anything they don't want to hear, though, so I move on.

Can't save the whole world...
