agirl -> How do you eat? (11/27/2011 5:42:44 PM)

Just recently I came across an article that mentioned that USA folk eat with their fork in the right hand and only use the knife in the right hand to cut food, then swap back to the fork in the right hand, laying down the knife in between.

Is this the most common way of dining in the USA or does it vary depending on where you hail from?

Kaliko -> RE: How do you eat? (11/27/2011 5:52:47 PM)

If I use a fork only, it's in my right hand. If I use a fork and knife, the knife is in my right, the fork in my left, and there is no switching going on.

(I actually just got up and tested this in my kitchen. I spend way too much time on CM. )

My eating habits are the same as Kaliko (although I love rhubarb!)
I find it's much easier for me to cut using my right hand as opposed to my left.

I do it exactly as your article says.
I am a righty.
My moms a lefty and she does it the opposite.

Why?
Do you do it like you drive over there? [:D]

RexDarcy -> RE: How do you eat? (11/27/2011 6:25:30 PM)

I'm a lefty but I use a fork in My right hand and the knife with My left.

DesFIP -> RE: How do you eat? (11/27/2011 6:32:31 PM)

I switch hands after cutting.

ShaharThorne -> RE: How do you eat? (11/27/2011 6:32:37 PM)

I cut with my right hand but I cut my meat up before putting the rest of my dinner on the plate. I hate carrying my knives around.

MysticFireTopaz -> RE: How do you eat? (11/27/2011 6:39:21 PM)

I'm a "lefty" and always eat with my fork in my left hand. Should I need to cut something, I use a knife with my right hand. Never any switching going on.

littlewonder -> RE: How do you eat? (11/27/2011 6:41:47 PM)

I've never noticed how other people eat so I have no idea how prevalent that is or where.

I personally hold everything with my left hand. If I'm cutting something I hold the fork with my right hand though and use the knife with my left hand and then after it's cut I switch the fork back to my left hand.

I'm a lefty and use my left hand for absolutely everything. My right hand is basically useless to me.

MasterG2kTR -> RE: How do you eat? (11/27/2011 6:58:32 PM)

I can honestly say that this is the one and only area where I am truly ambidextrous I can use either hand for either function, though I typically prefer fork in right hand and knife in left, and for the record I am a lefty for writing.

There is a European way of eating and an American way of eating.. I would say yes, most Americans do eat that way, me included..

I was brung up with a gran that worked in victorian well to do houses as a housekeeper. If I didnt set the table correctly I would get a fork stuck in the back of my hand. It tends to stay with you a few years.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: How do you eat? (11/27/2011 7:16:03 PM)

I am right handed, and use that hand for cutting, the left for the fork. People often look at me funny. I am used to it. [;)]

Hillwilliam -> RE: How do you eat? (11/27/2011 7:21:30 PM)

Y'all use forks?[8D]

Winterapple -> RE: How do you eat? (11/27/2011 8:31:52 PM)

I think the hand switch is the general American way.
I'm a bit ambi myself. I write with my right
and it's my dominant hand but I use my
left hand to cut my meat sometimes
especially if it's a softer meat. I also chop
up vegetables for cooking with both or
either hand.

I've read tj's article and we eat with knife in the right hand, fork in the left and do not change hands to eat. Therefore, we use both hands to eat our meals. (If you are left-handed, you'd do the opposite but still use both hands.)

It would be considered vulgar to change your fork to the right and eat just with the fork.(though we do sometimes do it at home when we're eating informally with friends, depending on what's being eaten.)

I see that it's called the European or Continental style.

Until I read this article I thought everyone using cutlery used it in the way we do, I had no idea that there was a different etiquette for the USA. You learn something new every day.

No, to lovetolaugh, we don't eat anything like as badly as we drive...LOL

I'm not sure I've stuck to one style. I've done the switcth thing, but I usually hold a knife in my left hand, rather than switch. I'm right handed generally, but playing instruments that use both hands gave me enough familiarity with my left.

IWould it be considered vulgar to eat in the European style in the USA? I know that eating with just your fork would be considered so here, but I wondered if it was the same case in reverse.

I don't know, really - I've never been in the position to be criticized for how I hold utensils. :p most of the people I know just "do whatever." When I ate with my ex's family in the UK, nobody said anything, though maybe they just thought I was being a weird American. :p

I can't speak for the entire UK (lol)........but if you have a guest it would be also be bad form to mention the way they ate or to make them feel uncomfortable in any way. That would be height of rudeness in itself.

I imagine that's also the case in the USA?

There are different *rules* for inside and outside of the home, or for casual and more formal meals. For instance, it's bad manners to have your elbows on the table.........but when at home , we sometimes do, especially if it's more of a *sit around the table for hours chatting and eating* situation. You wouldn't do that in a restaurant though, as a rule.

It all seems quite amusing and silly when taken apart, but like most culteral things, you just*know* what's acceptable and what isn't and it's barely thought about.
