Yahoo article reporting on a wired article that the least healthy states need the most antibiotics... I tend not to trust such scare articles although amusing to read.

This doesn't really shock me at all. There has been a long standing debate for decades as to if antbiotics actually make us sick in the long run. As far as farm animals go though I would worry about steroids and hormones just as much, if not more, as I would worry about antibiotics.

No. Poor diet, and lethargic lifestyles are making us fat. Control your portion sizes, get away from the machines, shed a few pounds.

Edit; I wasn't directing this at anyone. Just stating what I think is pretty obvious.

Yes, but people who are the size of Canada because they spend all their time stuffing their faces and take no exercise would much rather have an excuse to blame something else for their self inflicted problems.

Ive been the same weight for five years give or take ten lb, Ive been fat for forty nine years, I eat less than 1000 calories a day.
My issue is I am sedentary, I admit it
I dont stuff my face, in the slightest, I just have fuck all interest in exercising the amount it would take to be a size 14.
If thats a character flaw you find worse than internal ugliness and ignorance then thats your issue. I wont give a shit.
Im not diabetic, or cholesterol challenged, or have heart disease. For fifty I dont care if I ever see a size 14 again
Antibiotics, yeah I can see it, but I dont take em if I can help it, I have no doubt my food has them tho.
Ive been taken off several medications for weight gain issues

Chill, Lucy.
I have no problem with fat people, but I'm a bit fed up of the amount of them who blame everything and everybody except themselves for the problem. Hence my dismissive attitude to this line about a problem being caused by antibiotics rather than diet and/or lifestyle, dig?

Didnt mean to jump all over you Moony man...apoloooogies(pronounced apple ooogies)
I was thinking about fat threads in general, not givin you a hard time...specifically:)
Medication /hormones and chemistry certainly does affect people in more ways than is given out with medication scripts.
Big problem with pharma is long terms effects are not properly tested/// theres a fine line between long term testing, that and the cost of the drugs

so I got the stick outta my ass:)

"This could explain an awful lot for many"

"Could" is the operative word here. The naysayers responding thusfar could be right but we have no way of knowing. I ran around the net a bit and it's confirmed that cattle is given antibiotics for that purpose supposedly but there are other factors.

One poster here in the past said that when cows are corn fed it doesn't digest quite right which has an adverse effect on their liver. The hormones and antibiotics are needed to keep them alive to slaughter weight. A nice side effect of all this is that the meat is nicely marbled with fat. This is second hand information, but what isn't ?

Personally I believe that malnutrition causes alot of the obesity. The nutrients that are supposed to be in the foods usually are not, and the body senses that it needs more. However people do not eat the right things to fulfill these needs which leads to overconsumption. It's also quite debatable whether one could even find nutrient rich enough foods to be fully nourished these days.

Commercial farming is the culprit as farms are paid by the pound, not the vitamin or mineral content, and this is one of the things I cannot pin on greed. The real problem is that it would be cost prohibitive to fully fertilize the soil in which most of the food is grown. You would be paying ten bucks a pound for tomatoes.

It is very possible that antibiotics are a contributory factor in this, but no way are they solely responsible.

In my opinion of course.

Im sorry I guess I am not understanding the article ... in being that I dont know people that take antibiotics on a daily basis continuously.

For what purpose?

Mostly to avoid dying of an infection their immune system isn't up to dealing with, I'd imagine.

The cite from Wired is particularly hilarious: these states have higher rates of illness and obesity because everybody there is prescribed antibiotics, rather than (say) a lot of people being prescribed antibiotics because they're unhealthy...

I know that they're a bunch of neophilliac libertarian nutcases at Wired, but for Christ's sake, maybe they should try to be sure which is the cause and which is the effect before they come out with daft statements like that.

Can contribute to weight gain, not the sole cause. I've been buying antibiotic/hormone/BGH-free meat and dairy since I learned about this when I got sick in 1997.

Yeah, but as MIP says, they feed livestock much worse than a few antibiotics (actually to prevent infections in poorly fed and largely immobile livestock crowded together, rather than for fattening).
Besides, the article cited in the OP only mention antibiotics fed to livestock in passing, and concentrates on an assertion that taking prescription antibiotics makes people fat all by themselves.
(Along with, y'know, causing diabetes/heart disease/epilepsy/autism/leprosy/the black death/other: the usual complaints normally associated with anti vaccination nuts, in other words...)

There is an inherent flaw in the statement:
quote:

If that sounds far-fetched, consider this: States with the highest rates of antibiotic prescriptions also rank as the least healthy,

When people are sick, they are given antibiotics, so if a state has a high number of sick people, they also have a high number of people taking antibiotics.

So that was a statement based in the hope the readers are all ignorant.

To be honest, I thought that was quite a well known fact that antibiotics help to increase weight, on the other hand they only help, eating more than you burn is much more of an issue when it comes to weight increase.

I must admit, I do suspect similarly, Lady C. I was reading an article recently that advanced the hypothesis that people got fat because they ate too much and didn't do enough exercise. However, I'm always wary of counterintuitive theories by hippy scientists who obviously smoke too much whacky baccy.

Another element of the truth that hasn't been mentioned thus far in this thread is your own conviction that a properly trained immune system can fight off anything without any need for antibiotics or any form of medical intervention.
This gives the post above a certain hilarity, at least for those of us who don't wear tinfoil hats.

The amount the livestock is fed is too low to prevent infections, it's quite common and very well known that low doses of antibiotics help to gain weight, when it comes to livestock, the quicker they gain weight the more profitable are they for the farmer. The problem is that whoever consumes the milk or other animal byproducts (eggs, milk, etc.) is also consuming the antibiotics they were fed, not only is the weight gain a problem but another problem - a much more serious one - is that this builds up a resistance against antibiotics. I dunno if you have to be an anti vaccination nut to be aware of a few simple facts or why do you think that being resistant against antibiotics is such a massive problem when it comes to fighting infections and why do you think hospitals have such a problem with MRSA?

Come on, you really really have to be naive to believe that antibiotics are nothing but good, that thinking was popular a few decades ago and got us into this mess.

I'm super worried about surgeries and such, as I am allergic against a lot of antibiotics, since my body only tolerates a few the docs and I agreed on "only in emergencies", so when somebody had a cold and got antibiotics, I had chicken soup and hot tea, I tend to get less colds than friends and hardly ever infections. Antibiotics are great but also dangerous, everything depends on when and why they are given, because they were given too easily and too readily, our immune systems got weaker while the germs got stronger, as they are able to mutate and become resistant. Doesn't take rocket science to figure that out.
