Dr. Northrup's 5 Biggest Health Mistakes Women Make and How to Avoid Them MISTAKE #1: The doctor knows my body better than I do. The truth is that you know your body better than anyone else does. All too often women freeze when they go to the doctor, forgetting to tell him or her what’s really bothering them. They also assume that a doctor’s exam and medical testing are all that is necessary to get or stay healthy. The truth is that without your input and a thorough history from you, no doctor will be able to treat you optimally. Health tip: If you tend to “freeze up” in a doctor’s office, always take someone with you. MISTAKE #2: Drugs and surgery are the best approaches to most medical problems. Standard western medicine is based on a very limited understanding of the mind and body and their intimate connection. It is also overly influenced by the pharmaceutical industry. A headache is not a Tylenol deficiency. And depression is almost never a Prozac deficiency. Childbirth is not a disease that requires labor induction or a C-section. MISTAKE #3: My female body is a lemon, and I was born to suffer from menstrual cramps, PMS, excruciating labor pains, and a miserable menopause. Though it is true that far too many women suffer from the natural processes of the female body, the fact remains that these same processes are normal. They are not designed to result in pain or suffering. When you are willing to examine your beliefs and address lifestyle issues such as eating too much sugar, you find that the body is self-healing and that the processes of the female body were designed to bring you inspiration and pleasure! MISTAKE #4: If my mother had it, I am destined to get it, too. Far too many women have been led down the path of “genetic determinism”— it’s in my genes, therefore it’s inevitable. Here’s the truth: 80-90% of all diseases are stress and lifestyle related and have nothing to do with genes, per se. In fact, it is the cell membrane, not the genes, that determine the behavior of a cell. The reason why diseases “run in families” is because beliefs and behaviors run in families. Those who are the “black sheep” of the family almost never get the same diseases as the rest. Even in identical twins, 70% of the diseases that result are environmental and related to lifestyle, not genes! MISTAKE #5: It’s normal to get aches, pains, and medical problems as we age. It may be common for people to get sick as they get older, but it’s not natural. Nor is it inevitable. Staying active, choosing upbeat thoughts, hanging around healthy positive people, and understanding the power of the mind/body connection go a very long way toward creating vibrant health at any age. www.drnorthrup.com
