Iamsemisweet -> Cranberry juice fast (1/6/2012 11:35:01 AM)

My personal trainer has suggested that I go on a three day fast, where I drink 2 quarts of unsweetened cranberry juice per day (I HATE cranberry juice, but anything to be beautiful) eat raw vegetables and drink close to a gallon of water per day.  Three days is about how long I can take this.  After that, I will go on a regulated calorie diet he is planning.
Has anyone ever done this?  Any tips or suggestions?  I trust him, and he has spent many years training female body builders, so I believe he knows what works.  I think it may even feel kind of good after the food orgy that was the holidays.  I haven't really fasted before, and I am a little nervous about the whole thing.  I have looked at very juice fast diet suggestions on the internet, and one recommendation is that you cut out alcohol, caffeine and some other things from your diet a few days before going on the fast.  I didn't do this.  Anyone know how important this might be?

Why not just poke all that stuff up your ass with an enema?  Quit fucking around, anything for beauty, as you say...

Thanks for your suggestion mn.  Now, anybody who has actually done this type of fast?

Check out the Mayo clinic info online. I have not found a compelling argument for fasting for health reasons. So many swear by it but as far as I can tell, it trains your mind more than your body. Your body, when healthy does not hold on to the toxins people tell you that you have to flush out. Fasting can reduce your desire for large meals and give you a fresh start and feeling of power and control over your eating.

I caution you to do this just because someone told you to. Harsh tactics do not work on many, they backfire over time. Many studies have been done on denial. Almost everyone cannot have strict denial without compensating with overindulgence in another area. Just human nature. If you are by nature one to deny yourself or do as other instruct well, then go for it. A short fast will not hurt in any way. And check and see how you are to get your protein for the muscle building you are planning on doing. Quinoa is excellent - but not raw.

Many good books out there and reference information.

Depending on how much caffeine you usually ingest, you may get caffeine withdrawal headaches. If so, stop the fast, and slowly taper down your caffeine usage over a week. If you just have a cup or two of coffee daily, then you should be fine.

Have you ever even tasted unsweetened cranberry juice? [:'(]

OsideGirl -> RE: Cranberry juice fast (1/6/2012 12:00:20 PM)

Is that fast and diet to lose weight?

That is a like diet of the South Beach, and it is also typical of those going on like a zone diet, the pre-cursor, and I have done something like it, but not the cranberry juice.

And I wasnt joking about using the enema in cranberry juice, as you will get more out of the nutrients and phytos and whatnot, and you wont have to taste the stuff, eat more veggies and water.

If you could hold a quart of cranberry juice up there a half or even hour, (and it cleans out your colon nicely) you are miles ahead.

I am a little concerned about that, since I do drink quite a bit of coffee.  I will have to see how it goes.

I am not a fan of the whole fasting thing, it really doesn't serve a purpose for a healthy person except to give the stomach a break, and give a person water heartburn.

It's only a few days, give it a go. I do want to add that bodybuilders train in very specific ways for a very specific look---I used to train alongside them, and the insanity was amazing. Hydration is important, but we really don't need a gallon of water a day, all by itself. Pay attention to whether you are retaining water, swelling oddly, any of that on whatever food program he recommends, and if he is telling you to remove an entire food group, give him the hairy eyeball. There is no "bad" normal food (I am saying that deep fried twinkies are unnatural!) the bad thing is excess.

Splenda for that cranberry juice, use it!

Yes, I have choked it down before when I have had bladder infections.  Ick.

Obviously I won't lose very much on just a three day fast, but the diet afterward will focus on weight loss and making my workouts more effective.

Interesting.  It is sometimes hard to tell when you are joking, what with your blank face.  I have actually done worse things in the pursuit of vanity, so why not?:

start by lotsa roughage in them vegetables TODAY (say cauliflower (cruciferous (which I evidentally cant spell right the first time) and maybe steamed broccoli (5 minutes only)  celery is great, carrots (meh, but thats me)  good lettuce (not that iceberg shit) , sleep on it and poke a quart up there (first thing in the morning) where you aint gonna feel so bad laying around on the bed trying to hold it, hopefully near a bathroom......

Detoxing can be very uncomfortable, mentally, emotionally and physically, as organs suddenly release previously stored toxins into the system. Research and get informed.

BTW, when they say cranberry juice, I suspect they're not referring to the sugary, supermarket kind. Most folks usually use organic cranberry extract.

I keep Uva Ursi capsules on hand for that - works every time for me!

You'll be off center with the fasting - might as well be miserable with caffeine withdrawal at the same time.

kalikshama -> RE: Cranberry juice fast (1/6/2012 1:07:49 PM)

Yes, I have done a juice fast - Alison's program is 5 days now but I think when I did it in 2000 it was 7 days Revitalizing Cleanse: Nourishing Body, Mind, and Spirit

The grains didn't come in til towards the end. When it's done, add foods back in slowly and gently. We broke it with a rice pudding with raisins and almonds, nom nom nom.

I was concerned that a juice fast would contain too much sugar for me and my doctor had me also take small amounts of a meal replacement powder, I think Meta something; I'd recognize it if I heard it.

This program wasn't too hard because we had a lot of structure around it. I haven't been able to fast at home.

So, tips - keep busy but don't expect as much out of yourself. Gentle yoga. It's a good time to meditate if you are a practitioner.

ps - we did do enemas during the program but I don't know if that will be necessary for your 3 day fast. I couldn't find a good source for why enemas are needed for longer fasts.

Then I would suggest that you may want to have bloodwork done before you start this. If you have under laying health problems, he could actually do you harm. I've had personal trainers present me with diets that would have caused major issues, even after being informed that I'm PCOS/Insulin Resistant.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Cranberry juice fast (1/6/2012 1:44:28 PM)

Oh yes.  We are not talking Ocean Spray here, but unsweetened cranberry juice, as well as vegetables.
Fortunately, my general health is spectacular, so I doubt this experience will kill me (but will it make me stronger?).  As for the enemas, I have had exactly one in my life, and it wasn't a cranberry enema, either.  Still, like I said, I have done crazier things in the name of beauty.
