kalikshama -> Best supplement form of Vitamin D (1/8/2012 7:59:35 AM)

In October, I tested just barely deficient for Vitamin D. Now that I'm in Massachusetts and not spending time on South Florida's nude beach, I need to find other sources of Vitamin D than sunlight. I see that it comes in tablets, capsules, softgels, liquid, spray and cod liver oil [:'(]

Does anyone have a recommendation for the best form of supplement to use?

I've found that this can make a difference - for melatonin, sublingual is definitely more effective for me.

Regarding dietary sources, I don't drink milk or eat cereal and it appears that I would have to eat salmon several times a day every day to get enough that way.

To further confuse the issue, daily intake recommendation range from 200 IU to 5,000. I think I'll go for 1,000 - 2,000 as recommended by this researcher: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/27/health/27brod.html

Thanks!

KK

When my endocrinologist prescribed vitamin D, it was 50,000 IU once a month. I don't really know what the advantages of that setup are besides it just being once a month. Apparently, it's close to impossible to OD on it. I'm just throwing this out their as anecdotal though. Obviously, not something you should base your decision on.

Actually you can OD on it, since it's fat soluble.  You can get long bone pain, dry skin, and eventually brain swelling.

I take the prescription stuff once a month but you could take 1000iu once a day with few problems.   Any brand of D-3 will do.

BE VERY CAREFUL. It is rather easy to OD on Vitamin D. I would highly suggest talking to your doctor.

The best sources to get any vitamin, including vitamin D, is from food products.  There's nothing wrong with taking a vitamin supplement, (I take a multi vitamin daily)  but for best absorption into the body, you can't beat getting it from nutrition.
Some Vitamin D sources:
Eggs (yolk)
Fish (certain types--tuna, salmon etc.)
Milk fortified with D
Certain cereals/grains

edited to add: I tested low in Vitamin D last time I had a labwork....too much time in the office these days!

DreamyLadySnow -> RE: Best supplement form of Vitamin D (1/8/2012 8:24:34 PM)

The nude beach suggestion still sounds like the best idea!
How about those D=Drops they advertise, that you can put on fruit or whatever else you eat?
I take a cal/mag/D supplement daily so never really worried about it.

I would suggest talking to your doctor - if for no other reason then to see what amount of vit D they recommend from seeing your blood levels.  Easier then guessing yourself.

Kali-
Costco has a great buy on Kirkland D3, 2000 IU. That's what I take; check with your health care provider. Don't forget the Cal/Mag too.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Best supplement form of Vitamin D (1/9/2012 9:20:34 AM)

I use emergen-c vitamin D and calcium supplement. You mix it with water. I generally prefer my supplements in liquid form.
I live in the PNW, where typical winters are rainy and sunless, and just about everyone suffers from vitamin d deficiency.

I'm with the VA. They don't have a good track record with supplements. The iron they gave me for my anemia was completely ineffective. I get better results with blackstrap molasses, which the nurse had never heard of.

Plus they are using the outdated Vit D guidelines under which I am not deficient. They are also using the outdated mammogram recommendations. Etc.

I will need to find a medical practitioner more knowledgeable about supplements than those at the VA.

I agree with that. In addition to the nude beach, I was also eating a lot of salmon when in FL - in salads - it's too cold for salads here. (Canned salmon because fresh wild salmon is too expensive and farmed is, well, farmed.) Will be experimenting with some recipes this week.

Thanks everyone!

Yesterday, I was inclined to go with a soft gel or liquid Omega-3 combo like this: Super D Omega-3

But after so many of you mentioned the Cal Mag combo I'm going to look into that first.

The doctor told us to take D III 5,000 IU daily. But that's as much for seasonal affectiveness disorder as anything else. Since most everybody in this house is susceptible to it.

MariaB -> RE: Best supplement form of Vitamin D (1/11/2012 12:28:39 PM)

You would have to be taking at least 10,000 IU's per day for long periods of time before you overdosed on Vitamin D
I take 2000 IU's a day and I weigh 100lbs. If I weighed 200lbs I would take 4000 IU's a day but that would be my limit.
Green leafy vegetables are a good sauce of vitamin D and so is sun dried products and of course fish but try and stick to ocean fish.
Eat your lunch out in the sunshine. Even cold days provide plenty of vitamin D
and watch your iron levels. Too much iron can diminish vitamin D absorption.

Got any examples of those green leafs?
I usually get enough just walking my dog and stuff.
But since I'm a vegetarian I sometimes get a little low at the end of the winter.
Something I don't really mind, I'm not a growing kid so low levels of some vitamins probably won't kill me or do all that much harm as long as my diet is varied enough to not get a real depletion.
I haven't even bothered to ask people in the online veggy community about D-vitamin sources.
However if you're aware of any plants that's good D-vitamin sources then I wouldn't mind adding a bit more of them to my diet now in the late winter/early spring :-)

Regarding the sprays mentioned earlier, well the veggy organization in Norway recently started selling veggy approved sprays with D-vitamines so it's possible to find those in case anyone is wondering.
Oh, and regarding jelly tablets with liquid fish oil in it I wouldn't recommend eating those...
We've recently had a scandal here in Norway with someone testing those things finding rather horrible things in them, including traces of bird droppings and stuff... (if I don't remember wrong)
Also less alarming but still not exactly flattering, fish oil that's been standing in air for to long, ruining it...
Anyway, I'm sure they'll fix those things soon, after this scandal, but never the less, the testing of those things are a bit patchy sometimes and since you can't taste it you can't really know the quality of the stuff...

MariaB -> RE: Best supplement form of Vitamin D (1/28/2012 1:47:09 AM)

Sun dried mushrooms are the best thing for you if you are vegetarian but the reason you should eat plenty of green leafy vegetables is for the calcium. Calcium and vitamin D work hand in hand. Lack of vitamin D will effect your calcium levels, lack of calcium will effect your vitamin D levels. Water cress is very rich in calcium. shiitake mushrooms (sun dried) are a great source of vitamin D.

One reason I went with this brand was because it said:

Contaminant-Free

This product is regularly tested (using AOAC international protocols) for freshness, potency and purity by an independent, FDA-registered laboratory and has been determined to be fresh, fully-potent and free of detectable levels of mercury, cadmium, lead, PCB's and 28 other contaminants.

If you liked mushrooms Maitake is a great source, if memory serves.  ...tastes really good too.

sincelo -> RE: Best supplement form of Vitamin D (1/30/2012 11:09:26 PM)

Spirulina is a very high source of vitamin D .. i believe 150% of your daily intake.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Best supplement form of Vitamin D (1/31/2012 3:09:10 AM)

This site lists a whole bunch of foods that are good sources of vitimin D.
