Fornica -> Wintertime blah...what do you do to stay afloat? (1/11/2012 6:25:55 AM)

The battle against depression is a bitch in the winter.
I escape the cold every few weeks by flying to Cali, but sometimes it makes it even harder to be back than if I hadn't left at all.
Having kids helps in some regard, just the busyness alone leaves minimal time for self pity, but it still rears its ugly head.

What say you?

I am trapped in my office for long long days. This is the first year in about fifteen that I will have a WINDOW to look out of! It remains to be seen if this is a good thing or not.

I really do not like the winter, the heavy clothes, the coats, the annoyance of cleaning snow off my car at 10pm... I try to be in natural light at least 15 minutes a day, and of course, sleep.

I go to the park. In fact I am on my way there now. Have a great day[:)]

One January 6 years ago I had enough. NW Washington is gloomy and damp all winter long. Sunshine is rare until after the Fourth of July. Gary and I had met the summer before and he asked me to move to Arizona with him. So I packed my bag, got a plane ticket, and headed south. I complained for a couple months that there was too much sunshine. Then I got used to the big light in the sky.

Dont drink/eat stuff with caffeine in it as it suppresses serotonin.

Move to Oz.

Hook up with a hot Australian submissive who serves you cool drinks while you lay in the sunshine.

That would be my unbiased advice.

Do you watch Portlandia? There was a skit where the pair went to SoCal and were horrified by the giant light in the sky not covered by clouds!

I do one of the most difficult things to motivate myself to do.......I get out and MOVE.

If it's not too miserably cold I go for a walk at lunch. Just a quick half an hour speed walk around, up and down. It gets me through the day better.

And at least 3 times a week minimum, I stop at the gym on the way home and do as intense a workout as I can possible force myself to do. I really push myself. Between the physical exercise and, I believe the lighting they use, it totally changes my attitude. The feeling I get from going is so certain that my brain immediately starts cheering up as soon as I walk in the door and smell the chlorine from the pool and hot tubs....even though I almost never use either. It is a positive and happy place that ends my winter work days fabulously.

When we lived in Cedar Rapids, I had two things I set up so that I had to do them. When my kids got old enough to quit their paper routes, I took them over. It forced me to get up and get my ass out the door for a brisk walk every single morning. The bonus was that it completely paid for my second thing, having a horse boarded nearby that I had to get out to visit and exercise nearly every evening. (the smell of a horse barn is also an instant pick me up for me) Those two things made a huge difference.

No, have never seen that. However, I'll bet it was funny. It took awhile to get used to sunshine every day.

littlewonder -> RE: Wintertime blah...what do you do to stay afloat? (1/11/2012 9:24:16 AM)

This is something I am currently fighting...actually I've fought it my entire life but I have to deal with it every winter. It's majorly hard for me and I don't always defeat it.

I'm right now trying to find ways to beat it since nothing this year is working. I'm trying to get out and do more things, I talk to Master and he helps me to deal with it by spending more time with me, I've tried a "happy lamp" but even it does nothing for me this year.

I'm looking forward to reading other people's ideas on this.

put happy bulbs in ALL your fixtures, swap em out come spring, back in in late fall, get a vitamin D check from the doc, if the sun ever shines ,no matter how cold, get to a southern exposure and get your face full of sun, get out after it like you are giving head on death row, like its gonna be your last time.  Exercise, find things to keep moving, its ok to throttle back from the summer drives, but do do something for self-respect every day, read a book, plan a menu, what ever blows your dress up (even if it really doesnt blow it up).......and so on.......

DesFIP -> RE: Wintertime blah...what do you do to stay afloat? (1/11/2012 9:32:14 AM)

You can get a light box for seasonal affectiveness disorder or you can take a Vitamin D III 5000 IU pill daily.
And of course, if there is sun, get out in that without sunscreen on your hands and face for 20 minutes daily. Sunscreen blocks your ability to make Vitamin D.

Well here in Sarasota, I can go to the beach. If that's not an option for you, then I'd recommend a pedicure. Make sure you get the whole deal, including hot rocks and a massage chair.

I love Portlandia!
Actually, this winter in the PNW, it has been very little rain and lots of sunshine.
I cope with our typical winter by getting lots of exercise and taking Vitamin D Supplements

Force dem children to go with you! (not to the pedicure mind you)  It's good for them also.

IF you have a local YMCA, see about a family membership. They usually have childcare, even if just for a few hours. There are family swims, and other family events. Ours has a game room with a rock climbing wall even.
