VideoAdminAlpha -> Why moderator nicks? (1/13/2012 8:57:07 PM)

Because of all the discussion about this particular subject, and all the theories that are held concerning this policy, I want to address moderators and why they have moderator nicks and not their usual nicks.

These are some of the reasons that moderators do not post as moderators under their regular nicks.

Moderators ARE users of the site, and in all cases at present, have participated in the discussion forums. You have all seen moderator nicks come and go. That is, because for various reasons, voluntary or involuntary, the mod lineup changes. Some get burnt out, some have real life situations come up, some just dont work out. Does that mean that they should be banned from the forums permanently? Does that mean that, if one wants to help the site, they should not be allowed to post as a user and still actually enjoy the forums?

I do not post AT ALL under my regular nick anymore, other than the occasional happy birthday etc to people that I have written and communicated on the forums with. The other moderators are allowed to post under their regular nicks for a couple of reasons. Believe it or not, they actually have opinions, that are utterly independent of the site. If they expressed those under a moderator nick, would that not stop healthy debate? Would that not also "taint" their opinions, so that others may not want to disagree with them? Would that not possibly kill threads because a "moderator" posted on the site, and possibly held a non popular opinion? Also, those opinions are NOT from the site, why would we want to muddy the waters and have users possibly think that the moderators opinion is also the site opinion? This is different than Fet, because the group owners are very visibly posting their own opinions, and in no way could that be construed as Fet's opinion. Not so here. Also, when moderators retire, for whatever reason, they are able to continue ( or resume as the case may be) posting freely under their own nick, without other users treating their remarks differently than any other users.

I will say, UNEQUIVOCALLY, that a moderator NEVER moderates a thread they have posted on as a user. That would be grounds for their immediate cessation of moderator capabilities. I cannot say that did not happen under previous "moderation terms", but I can only assure you that it DOES NOT happen now.

The reason is not a sinister plot to confuse users and manipulate the boards.

VAA, I may not always agree with the reasons why some things are moderated and some are not. But no one on your side has refused to give me a reason when I asked... and I often find myself seeing their point of view.

We would never know which Mod is posting under their regular nic. I suppose there would be a potential for abuse if they did post on threads, then went back and moderated them. Thank you for explaining that part publicly. You are all human with opinions. I, for one, have no issue with any of you posting under your regular accounts. Being a Moderator is a voluntary position. I wouldnt find it fair to say, yes, you can moderate, but you have to give up your own views in order to do so.

We posters give you all lots of work to do.. and sometimes a hard way to go as you do it. Thank you all for not taking it personally. I imagine my time on the boards could be hellacious otherwise.

You Ladies and Gentlemen rock!

Tazzy, well said!
And when I'm contacted by a Mod I'm always polite with my response and try not to argue.
In the past I've seen posters argue *on the thread* with the Mods. No class.
A polite message and inquirey goes a long way.

Well, that didn't/doesn't seem to be a problem on B.com. No one that I know of ever mistook a mod's opinion as being the "Party" line. I can't really speak about the fluff stuff, but on Politics, Philosphy/Religion, and so on, everyone knew that so and so was Libertarian, or Pastafarian, or whatever, but arguing against their beliefs was perfectly acceptible, and (I won't say never) not penalized.

I can see, if a Moderator's alt ID is known, that when that mod steps down, for whatever reason, they could catch a lot of flack for just doing their job.

As far as I could tell, that didn't happen when they stepped down over there at the Purple Palace. If they were sucky mods, folks let them know right away.

Consider the mess on the other thread. I wouldnt want to open myself up to that potential for money, let alone for doing so for free.

Are the mods here volunteers, not paid?? I keep seeing that being assumed, and I'm curious.
I respect the decision in regards to why mods have nicknames, but don't agree with it. I think it's impossible not to colour your decisions based on personal interaction, but this is a message board, and I realize it's not life or death decisions that need to be made.

mnottertail -> RE: Why moderator nicks? (1/14/2012 8:03:58 AM)

How would they be paid?   I don't see how they would out of the site financing from your memberships.

(And VAA has said many times on many threads that they are not paid)  You just missed the threads Fornie, no biggie.

Fornica -> RE: Why moderator nicks? (1/14/2012 8:07:32 AM)

ah, ok. I had not seen that. I didn't know about the financial aspects of the board.
Thanks sugarpants!

The mods have said over and over they are not paid, they volunteer their time.

I have said this repeatedly. I think the MODS do a great job for this site. For being a free site I think they are very actively involved in the site. They get called every name in the book and never retaliate. So my hat is off to the crew at CM with a bow!

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Why moderator nicks? (1/14/2012 8:13:16 AM)

What he said above. It's a ballaching thankless task.

I was mod at a fanclub site for two years and had a wonderful time, under my own username. It was NOTHING LIKE this madhouse. It's awful that for one thread or another, I've been at this site nonstop for the past 12 hours and my arse HURTS, lol.

I don't have a masochistic bone in my body.

Tomorrow I am going to play Pokemon all day long and give myself a break from the...
[sm=axe.gif]

That main thread I've been keeping track of will be locked by then, and all those clicky links to read will stop appearing...

Hehe perhaps you should meditate on that notion for a while. [8D]

BTW, if that avatar is you, I dig those golden curly locks. I've appreciated hair like that all my life. My first real GF had tresses like that. 17 and in Uni she was, Upper West Side girl, dancer a la "All That Jazz" who introduced me to Musicals. Le sigh... [sm=hearts.gif]

ScatteredRose -> RE: Why moderator nicks? (1/14/2012 8:26:51 AM)

I did moderating for a chat room for guys who broadcasted video games...It gets to be tiresome to babysit from time to time. Granted I know it's a bit harder on here since there are three different chatting outlets, and not to mention we're all supposed to be adult here...^_^

But, I like the Moderator nicknames. I'm a huge Greek nerd so it kind of tickles my nerd bone a bit. Plus, I do like the idea that it separates you from the rest so there's no confusion.

barelynangel -> RE: Why moderator nicks? (1/14/2012 8:34:55 AM)

Okay i am scared -- i SWEAR this thread was in P&RS yesterday when i went to bed and today its in Off Topic.

Can someone clarify this for me or find my mind for me and get it back to me.

Very odd.

angel
