Its not so much a problem as an annoyance. Recently, in the mornings, but not every morning, I have been experiencing what I call "starbursts". It reminds me of fireworks. Its blinding in that I cant see pass the ... pixelated... pattern, which is in color. It lasts a few minutes, then is gone. I seem to only have this is the morning upon waking up and turning on the lights. I have my own theories on what this could be, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Are you diabetic? Flashes could be a sign of retinal detachment or an ocular migraine. Go see your opthalmologist, just to be on the safe side.

Thats just it, I have been to one recently. About 2 months back. He noted some retinal changes, but nothing he saw required lazer treatment. And, yes, I am diabetic. I spoke to my physician, who is great, who said its an ocular migraine. While my Doctor is great, I always like to ask around.

He saw your eyes 2 months ago; he didn't see them in a crystal ball and tell you what they would be like in 2 months... so, call him and ask him. It probably is an ocular migraine, but wouldn't you rather go and be told that, than not go and find out (too late) it wasn't?

What is happening when you go through it? Are you sitting, standing?

My opthomologist has always said that "flashing lights" could mean a retinal tear or detachment, so I think if you wanted to be very safe, you might want to discuss with yours http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/retinal-detachment/DS00254/DSECTION=causes Hope you are able to resolve it and that it is nothing serious.

Ok, 4 theories. (These are the things that have made it happen to me, it's a horrid feeling) 1) You got outta bed too fast? 2) Blood sugar (you already answered that one. I'm hypoglycaemic, and get it if I am super low) 3) Pregnancy 4) Low blood pressure

1) No, i tend to drag out of bed... no rushing for me. 2) That was my first thought too. Sugars are running between 90 and 120 now.. yay me! 3) Ummm.. you are soooooooooo cute! 4) a distinct possibility. but, again, no rushing out of bed. I am on bp meds. This isnt every morning. Its been a week since I had that problem. But there was a week when I had it 3 times.

No, and the one morning they dipped below 70, I didnt have the lights. Its just plain weird. I called the eye dr office this afternoon. Hopefully I will hear back tomorrow

Off and on for about a month after I got new glasses I had something like the animation: http://www.allaboutvision.com/conditions/ocular-migraine.htm . I asked the doctor about retinal tearing and he scoffed - "Have you been hit in the head with a boxing glove lately?"

No one mentioned that aspirin thins the blood and is otherwise harmless. If there is any stroke-like stuff happening, aspirin could help a lot. (Woke one day unable to see out of half my right eye. Blood clot. Stroke.)

What is your theory, Taz? Have you had laser or cataract surgery? Have any blood pressure problems? Is this something to consider? Sorry guys. I called the Diabetic eye specialist. He said since it was isolated incidents not lasting more than 30 minutes, and not repeating everyday, or causing any pain, he felt secure in agreeing with the physician that it was an ocular migraine. However, he also stated that if they start occurring again (I havent had an incident since I started this) I was to call back, and he had the nurses note in my chart that I was to get an immediate appointment. So, time will tell. Oh, btw, I am on a daily baby aspirin.
