as an aside: what's the difference between coriander and cilantro? as far as I can tell, coriander is simply dried/ground cilantro. Is that right?

I wish I had thought of that sooner...but being near granny age now...(Ill be 36 the 22nd of Feb) I figure some Kick Boxing classes and Ill call it good.

Well, maybe not good. Ill probably be calling 911 because I will have managed to round house myself in the face (I am a klutz like you would NOT believe)
But at least I will be in some kind of shape.

Yes. They do taste very different so not great substitutes for each other but will do in a pinch. I add 1/4 t coriander when I make Jasmine rice and cilantro to lots of Latin or Asian dishes.

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum), also called cilantro, or dhania is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae. Coriander is native to southern Europe and North Africa to southwestern Asia. It is a soft, hairless plant growing to 50 centimetres (20 in) tall. The leaves are variable in shape, broadly lobed at the base of the plant, and slender and feathery higher on the flowering stems. The flowers are borne in small umbels, white or very pale pink, asymmetrical, with the petals pointing away from the center of the umbel longer (5–6 mm) than those pointing towards it (only 1–3 mm long). The fruit is a globular dry schizocarp 3–5 mm diameter. I always thought coriander was the seed and cilantro the leaf.

Cilantro in its leaf form is DISGUSTING to everyone in my family--totally tastes like soap. Coriander, we like. It's genetic, evidently.

thanks for the coriander/cilantro info, folks! I use coriander (in small amounts) in some of my cooking, but LOVE cilantro, nice and fresh and flavorful!!

Starting to try dishes with ginger, now, too.. yummmmm
