HM has not been taking his vitamins, ever since we saw some studies that indicated that they weren't absorbed well. He's since been getting sick much more often. (so they were obviously helping him either physically or psychologically!)
He has now tasked me with getting some info on good vitamins to take.
I-being lazy and knowing that someone here knows the answer-came here to ask you; are there vitamins your body actually does absorb? Is liquid the way to go? I do realize that if he were eating perfectly, in a perfect world, he would get all the vitamins he actually needs from his food. But it's not and he doesn't. Soooo? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any direction you can give me.

you aint gonna believe this, but believe it.... if you can get a liquid vitamin thingie, (cuz if you gotta bust pills and boil you lose alot although you could grind and dissolve in hot, still at loss)

Vitamin enema. Not for bulk, but for holding.

The whole vitamin issue... le sigh. My dad is getting B-12 injections, and I have doctor clients that literally shoot up vitamin supplements.

The digestive system has a lot to do with vitamin absorption, and slamming it with giant doses in the hope that some will stick just seems bonkers to me. Is there a vitamin group that he feels will help him more than another? The water-soluble ones, can't he just have some juice? Some carrot-cranberry would take care of a lot.

Metals, well anyone anemic can tell you the hell of iron supplements. I can't get past the idea that adding SOME of the right foods is better than choking down pills. I am one of those that invariably gets sick (like, all day sick) on supplements so I don't take them. I don't get sick, either, but I think the why of our getting sick or not is a very complex issue and vitamins are a minor aspect of that.

My question is--if he is getting sick off the vitams, why not just go back on to them? So what if a study shows whatever? I am sure he knows that a study can show pretty much anything at all. Those colloidal silver people will tell you that sewage plants are full of undigested vitamin pills. Are they any more right?

If taking vitamins (and I recommend Flintstone chewables, honestly, easy to digest!) has a visible positive effect, take them and fie on the studies.

And Ron is right, too! The large intestine is going to absorb a lot of the value and hit the bloodstream with it.

I also suspect that Ron is some kind of twisted ass freak.

I like Ron.

Vitamins make me sick too, Hibbie. (and don't even get me started on iron pills! I'd rather be anemic than take those bastards!)

I take at least 18 supplements a day. To me the whole thing rests upon two factors. One is that our food has less and less nutrients because we've been exploiting soil now over 60 years for mass production. Thus, we need supplements.

It is incumbent upon the user to research what to take to aid in the assimilation of these supplements for example...Vit. D (in pill form) to help absorb calcium. One sub asked me how much of this or that do I get in my diet. I told her I didn't know for sure. She said supplements are our path to trying...trying to make sure...we get enough.

Plus what I do is either put supplement pills in a blender with a home made morning smoothie or with others...take them with a meal. I am very serious here, even though doctors have told me it is not absolutely necessary. I and nutritionists I've consulted, believe it should always be done.

I know of one man who takes 150 supplements but not all...everyday. He is 60 with the physiology of a 30 year old.

My dad was a vitimin "junkie."  Until he got cancer and the oncologist told him that all his vitamins would just feed his cancer.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who gets sick when taking any type of vitimin supplement.

Realistically, HM doesn't have to make a lot of food changes to get the same effect he gets from the vitimins.  Adding a glass of juice or some fruit each day, a serving or two of vegetables chosen carefully (many have lots of different vitimins) and he will be in the same position as he was with "non-absorbing" vitimins.

Best way to do this would be for him to get to the doctor and have some blood work done to see what vitimins he is deficient in so he knows what food changes will be most beneficial.

I do take Amino Acids every day and I take it in liquid form. Amino acids are the building blocks of everything our body needs. Its a natural weight suppressant too because it transfers fat in your cells into energy.
I also take vitamin D and gentle Iron but then I have a condition that depletes my iron levels.

When you take it in liquid form does it taste as horrible as vitamins smell? (I'm assuming the answer is yes...)

We use a liquid vitamin, Passion 4 Life. We started on that because I have nausea problems because of the coatings used on the pills. We've found it works great. It doesn't taste like vitamins, it tastes kind of apricot-y.

I'll look into that. Thanks!
(but I still wonder how it could not taste or smell vitaminy)

XXblushes, I dilute with water and to begin with I had to hold my nose because the taste was too disgusting. Over time I have got to like the taste and although it will never taste like a good glass of red wine, its actually quite pleasant. Its just a case of getting used to it.
The one thing I absolutely hate the taste of but still take it daily, is black strap molasses. I spoonful followed by a glass of water and then vigorouslybrushing my teeth.

Remember the old cast iron skillets and cooking pots? That was why our elders weren't anemic. It is possible to get iron in your diet without having to take supplements - foods and from making a change back from those non-stick, teflon-type pans.

Bingo! Let's be honest, you don't even absorb all the vitamins in your food. No system is perfect. You have to find what works for you. Not being a vitamin expert, I'd just talk to your doctor. He/she should be up to scratch on any relevant research regarding vitamin intake. BTW, just because one study found that vitamins don't get absorbed, doesn't mean that study was accurate or widely accepted. There is a study out there for everything, and it takes several reports, carefully scrutinized for methodology, all confirming each others results before a doctor will start to alter his/her methods of care, as it should be! So if your doctor tells you to take vitamins, I'd do so, even if one study you read once said otherwise. I mean, there are studies out there bashing vaccination and praising lobotomies to high heaven.

He is a doctor twice over, and has written a few medical books, so he knows which studies are legit and what not.
He just asked me to do some research on which vitamins are considered the most beneficial at this time. : )

I see. Well, I can't help you there, but I can tell you that the Flinestones vitamins and those Vitamin C Gummies shaped like orange slices taste the best. *Drool*

I just take them(a multi-vitamin) and know I get sick more often if I don't. I also take additional calcium because I have a condition which causes me to absorb less. If I am feeling whimpy or have been exposed to someone sick, I pop a C and a Zinc.

The only 'sick' I've experienced in taking vitamins is temporary nausea if I haven't eaten anything when I take the vitamin.
