It is simple and clear line...If a trait affects your life adversely, and is beyond your control, it is a mental illness.

But...I must admit if bad grammar and spelling is a mental illness then I am a real slobbering nut case.

Just as a side note...I believe any character trait that, you cannot control, and adversely affects your life is truly a mental illness. Calling something a mental illness, like shyness that affects your life, is a sane and logical fact...

I suppose that could be said about everyone, in one form or another. Even people who have mental lapses, like dialing the wrong number or forgetting something at the store, could be considered mentally ill. This could even include people who misspell words and use poor grammar.

Seriously, though, where do you draw the line?
The line is when it cripples your ability to live a life that is fulfilling to yourself. I hardly think dialing the wrong number constitutes life crippling

The bull crap comes from people that think they have the ability to cure you.

many are helped from the mental health profession. If you had a bad experience that is unfortunate though i have had plenty of bad experiences from the medical profession. This does not mean i will refrain from seeking out medical help if i need it.

My opinion, which is not based on knowledge but just with personal experience, is that there is little long-term success at treating people with mental illnesses. I think most just learn over time how to cope on their own.
have you treated many? Or are you going on your own experiences. One maybe three people that you know? There are some disorders that are very resistant to treatment as are some medical disorders.

People with extremes of mental illness usually end up drugged or committed or both against their will...not cured.

since deinstitutionalization, there are very few people that are committed against their will for anything longer than the observational 72 hours. There are many that are placed on drug therapy and I think that it can be an issue personally. It is up to the individuals to look into other options. It is up to patients to play an active role in their health and not passively accept doctors prescriptions.

I agree, although I think there should have to be some sort of clear and present danger in order to justify locking someone up in an institution.

Oh and as to the article, it was extremely biased. I think Reuters may be attached to "Fox News". ODD and internet addiction may not have been given official labels though they have been under other heading before this. Remember that it is not like the professionals look at you and say "Oh she is shy, Mentally ill". There are criteria that have to be met like that you lie to your family and friends to spend time online, you disengage from social activities to be online and so on. You must meet a certain number of those criteria. I am not saying the system isn't flawed and really i see no reason to label at all. I think if you are having difficulties with fish you can get help and should do so without stigma.

My shyness( and I'm not kidding,I'm shy in person) is part of who I am.Some woman find it incredibly endearing, some have wished it didn't dissipate ,as it always does, after I got to know them...these woman liked the shyer quieter me better than the rollicking good time charlie I become once I feel "safe' with people.
As a younger man when in social situations my first step was always to throw 2 strong drinks( this was often supplemented with illegal substances....lol) down my throat.....just so I could function,I've gotten way better over the years, but my personality still gets submerged till I know you, hence first meetings are murder on my nerves.....lol

Yeah, If you go beyond the article and actually go on to read the letter of complaint there is nothing mentioned really about fetishes or alternative types of relationships.

The NCSF has been working towards making certain that: Kinky is not a Diagnosis.
https://ncsfreedom.org/key-programs/dsm-v-revision-project/kinky-is-not-a-diagnosis.html

Changes in that area are being made:
The Paraphilias Subworkgroup is proposing two broad changes that affect all or several of the paraphilia diagnoses, in addition to various amendments to specific diagnoses. The first broad change follows from our consensus that paraphilias are not ipso facto psychiatric disorders. We are proposing that the DSM-V make a distinction between paraphilias and paraphilic disorders. A paraphilia by itself would not automatically justify or require psychiatric intervention. A paraphilic disorder is a paraphilia that causes distress or impairment to the individual or harm to others. One would ascertain a paraphilia (according to the nature of the urges, fantasies, or behaviors) but diagnose a paraphilic disorder (on the basis of distress and impairment). In this conception, having a paraphilia would be a necessary but not a sufficient condition for having a paraphilic disorder.

It's called beer.

Exactly!  I always found that a cure for shyness.  And whizz.  Whizz is ace for shyness.  I wonder if we in the UK could get either or both on the NHS if we were to be 'registered shy'?

Not in my experience. Depression can be cured in about 70% of patients within 2 1/2 years. Another 15% require SSRIs for five years. About 15% require the medication lifelong.

My daughter is ultrahigh cycling bipolar disorder. As in she cycles every five minutes between suicidal depression and rage. She was fortunate enough to be diagnosed one year before the first effective medication for this most severe variant came on the market. Between the anticonvulsants and the atypical anti-psychotics, she is effectively normal. Prior to their development there had been no child with this who had graduated high school, who was not a drug addict and a runaway. Not one who had not died by age 20. She's the first to graduate high school, first to graduate college, first to compete nationally in a NCAA sport when at diagnosis we were told that Special Olympics would be too much for her.

Typically bipolars are hospitalized between five and seven times in their lifetimes. She's been once, for diagnosis. You are incorrect. There is treatment if there is money to pay for it and if you are lucky enough to have an advocate who can find you a good psychiatrist who specializes in your disorder.

We got lucky. With less than 3000 adolescent psychiatrists in the nation, and all of them with full patient loads, one moved to my area and took six private patients every other week. These days she doesn't take any private patients as she handles every school district within an hour and a half drive plus the highest security youth offender facility around.

Going by your beliefs, a diabetic should be considered a druggie. There is no difference if the problem is brain chemical disorder or body chemical disorder. If the chemicals that govern us don't work, we need them fixed. Or do you, as they did when insulin was first developed. believe that treating people with effective medication is against morality?

I think there is a difference between controlled and cured...My daughter, sister, and grandmother all have the same problems as your child...None were or are cured. All were and are drugged to the pint of hardly functioning... They have all been to multiple doctors...even shock treatments.

In going to the support group meetings I have not found anyone who was CURED. I will not nor cannot dispute your figures I can only say I don’t see all these cured people.
