I recently got some shea butter hand cream by Nubian Heritage, which doesn't have any weird chemicals in it, has a nice creamy "natural" feel and a mild smell, is very moisturizing, and is priced similarly to Burt's Bees. Definitely going to try more stuff by them. They're aimed at black women, so the hair care probably won't be what I need, but skin is skin and the hand cream is pretty good.

Highly informative post thanks!

Mineral oil is clear, liquid oil with no scent and will not spoil. It is produced as a byproduct of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil, the same stuff they make gasoline from. Mineral oil is leftover liquid, and because it is abundant, it is very inexpensive. It is CHEAPER for manufacturers to purchase these byproducts as filler than it is for the industry to dispose of it. In fact, it is more expensive to dispose of mineral oil, than to purchase it. Mineral oil is the main ingredient in many baby care items as well. Baby oil, Vaseline (petroleum jelly), baby wash liquid soap, and baby lotions all contain mineral oil as a key ingredient. In fact 98% of all cosmetics use mineral oil, including your eye shadow, blush, lipstick, shaving cream and your everyday moisturizer and lotion you use at home. It is also used in most SPF sunscreen.

and

Please dont poison yourself with Mineral Oil kids!

and

Mineral oil or liquid petroleum is created from the distillation of petroleum, as a by-product of gasoline. It has relatively low value and is produced in very large quantities. Mineral oil is used in lubricants, coolants, lotions, ointments, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic products. Refined mineral oil is used as transformer oil. Other petroleum and mineral oil products are also available.

and if you research it yourself, you may not wish to have it contact your precious skin ever again.

Pure shea butter is great. So is pure coconut oil. If you research, if you have that inclination to make your own products you can see how you can infuse some healing herbs into your mix and different oils as well.

Oh yes. I like to get all of my legitimate information from, "Mimi's Tanning Shack".

It is made from petroleum no matter where you get your 411, it wont change that fact. You want to put gasoline products on your face and body please do!

Jesus woman, if you think it's gasoline, please, by all means, go put a couple quarts in your gas tank. Mimi's tan shack totally told me it was ok.

Not sure what your bitchiness is all about, are you jealous of me or something? Must be. I can imagine why as well.

If you want to use Mineral Oil products,-- go research it yourself, and break down your immune system etc go for it.

I cant stand bullying humour and your comments are not pertinent.

They put bleach in our water so would you then tell someone to go dye their hair in water?

I haven't posted at length because I've been working all week. However, here's the deal. Although mineral oil is a petroleum product, it is NOT gasoline, it's a byproduct of the distilation process of petroleum. However, when crude oil is mined, you don't get a single product. It's always a mix, and there's several substances, with different molecular structures that are found

alkanens from which the fuels are obtained
naphthenes from which some sort of fuel with odd molecular shapes are obtained. Forget exactly
Aromatics from which you get the beginning bits for mineral oil
Asphaltenes from which, apparently, we obtain asphalt

While it is well known that extensive and prolonged exposure to hydrocarbons like gasoline, kerosene, tars, and lubricants ( the industrial sort) is carcenogenic, there has never been enough research to prove that 'aromatic' oils cause cancer in humans. Most of the research has been geared towards the consumption of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons from contamination from food packaging and plastics. The general consensus appears to be that you should not eat plastic. Who knew?

Posting nonsense like you have makes me suspect you get your information from housewives who have decided they want to have a 'business' selling cosmetics that come prepackaged with their own brand of hysteria and day time TV.

Also, I'm not jealous, just face palming someone telling people that "mineral oil is gasoline!" Really?

Be careful, the product you produce in your house totally probably has dihydrogen monoxide in it. Studies show that if you consume too much dihydrogen monoxide, you could die.

For my hair, body, and lips, I use organic coconut oil.

Whenever it needs it, I use a wide-tooth comb to comb coconut oil through my hair after I shampoo it. Leave it on overnight or all day. Wash out the next day. I sometimes use just a tiny amount to tame stray hairs.

I dab a little on my lips to moisturize.

I also rub a just a tiny bit on my hands, feet, or where ever needs it.

I tried to send you a message on Burts Bees, LaTigresse, but couldn't find a profile. It's regarding the start-up company itself. I'm not at liberty to discuss it on public forum, but I can assure you that the original folks would be horrified by this. HORRIFIED.

I heard about this....they're no longer using actual "Bee's".....now they use "B's".

They actually go down to Home Depot, buy all the "B's" and grind them up...and these "B's" are made in China (they stay true though in one respect....they always send a guy named Burt to make the purchase).

Coconut oil is perfect for the human body, plus it has the added bonus of being sustainable. It is super great to eat and cook with. Goes to a high temp without turning into trans fats plus it has that wonderful attribute of carrying viseral fat, heavy metals and other creepy shit out of your body.

I like to get my information from the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database.

It's our mission at Environmental Working Group to use the power of information to protect human health and the environment. EWG's Skin Deep database gives you practical solutions to protect yourself and your family from everyday exposures to chemicals. We launched Skin Deep in 2004 to create online safety profiles for cosmetics and personal care products. Our aim is to fill in where industry and government leave off. Companies are allowed to use almost any ingredient they wish. The U.S. government doesn't review the safety of products before they're sold. Our staff scientists compare the ingredients on personal care product labels and websites to information in nearly 60 toxicity and regulatory databases. Now in its eighth year, EWG's Skin Deep database provides you with easy-to-navigate safety ratings for a wide range of products and ingredients on the market. At about one million page views per month, EWG's Skin Deep is the world's largest personal care product safety guide.

I have no problems paying a little more for personal care products that don't use cheap shit like petroleum by-products or toxic shit like parabens or artificial fragrance. I save money by buying from iherb.com, where my shampoo is 40% off MSRP.

Actually, it only costs more compared to cheap supermarket brands but is less compared to salon brands.

Some grocery items are cheaper on iherb too.

Use coupon code IBA153 for $10 off. http://www.iherb.com/

Suggestion: Make your own. It's not hard and it can be so much better for your skin. Here's a recipe i found and am going to try for lip balm:

3 Tbsp Coconut Oil
3 Tbsp Honey
1 Tbsp Beeswax

Using a small saucepan over low heat combine your coconut oil, honey and beeswax. Stir continually until it is all melted and combined 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and carefully spoon into containers.

Use raw, unrefined coconut oil and raw, local honey. You may be able to find the coconut oil at Costco, if not most health food stores carry it. Nutiva is a good brand. Local farmers markets should have vendors that offer honey and beeswax. Be certain the honey is raw and local. Store-bought honey often has corn syrup in it and is always processed and never local. Local honey will be the best for you.

Well wishes,
sansa

food for thought about Lush

another article about the crap in Lush products, "“Most of the public I spoke to while working for Lush simply assumed the products were all natural because of Lush’s very clever branding and the tactful placement of herby, muddy facemasks kept on ice . . . While working there, I began to understand that Lush is a whitewash brand that is incredibly skilled at putting on a natural ‘front’ and reaping the profits from this subtle deception.”

caveat emptor baby

that does not surprise me.. I can not even tolerate walking past a Lush store cuz of the smell eminating from it, way too strong for me and i start sneezing like crazy.. I have allergies and "stinky" stuff makes me sneeze frequently.. the more "stink" the more I sneeze, so no smell or just very light smell is what i look for..

This is a great thread.. I will have to look into some of these other products/companies.. I want to also start making some of my own stuff..
