LaTigresse -> Burt's Bees (2/15/2012 11:50:51 AM)

I have been a long time loyal customer of the brand. Their honey and shea body butter WAS the most fabulous winter skin treatment I had ever found. I wouldn't spend a day in a dry climate without it.

Recently I found myself getting low so picked up another jar. Last week, I opened the new jar and much to my horror found a toxic smelling slime unlike anything I have ever dreamt of putting on my body. That's when I noticed the 'new and improved' on the label.

After some research I discovered that Clorox brand had purchased my beloved Burts Bees on the low down, several years ago. Since the purchase they have been slowly and quietly changing the products. Ending the attempts to avoid plastic containers and cheapening the products themselves. Shrinking the packaging sizes slightly (example, a 6.5oz became 6.1oz) while raising the price. Using less expensive ingredients and calling it, 'new and improved'.

In my investigation I found that they can still say of course, 'natural' ingredients because petroleum based products are natural. However, the reality is that few people that read 'natural' will think petroleum based products.

When I contacted the company about my dismay at the change in my favourite products, how they stunk, I was ignored. Another customer that was voicing the same thing got a form reply.....We, here at Burt's Bees value our customers and their opinions as we strive to make our products.......yada yada yada. Worthless shit.

Same old story of a really great small company, getting bought up by a big corporation and the original product line being trashed.

So, if there are any other Burt's Bees customers looking for a replacement. I have found a company called Upper Canada Soap Company. Their Naturally line has some really great body products I've tried. I found it locally in the health food section of a grocery here in Iowa City. But if it's not available locally, it is available on Amazon.

Holy crap, are you serious?! Noooooo, I loooooved Burt's Bees!! No animal testing, great ingredients. Their Avocado hair butter was one of my favorite things..... *le weep*

LaTigresse -> RE: Burt's Bees (2/15/2012 11:57:14 AM)

I know. I was so upset over that one little stinking (literally) jar of body butter. And the more I've dug into this the more angry I've become.

I read that they no longer obtain their bee wax here in the US. That Clorox does test on animals. And that their packaging is getting less and less eco friendly.

http://strongbrands.wordpress.com/2011/01/03/clorox-stumbles-with-burts-bees/

Apparently Clorox paid too much and are losing money. Now trying to save their asses by cheapening the product.

Ugh... something else to research tonight.
That's like a total sell-out of everything they used to stand for. How flipping ridiculous.............. [:-][:-][:-]

So I need to treasure my little tins of lemon nail creme? What about the bath oil? ~sad~

I've got a friend...she rarely updates her website. Though she is on facebook. I love her products..she will actually manufacture if you tell her what you need.

Years back in San Fran I used to buy a vanilla scent...hard scent. Anyway they stopped making it. It was imported from France..there is none to be had. I told her everything I could about it and she made me some up. Much cheaper to.

Her business facebook is. https://www.facebook.com/PaperStreetSoap1

As for the Burts Bees you may want to start posting on places like ripoffreport.com. It generally gets decent attention. With enough negative attention they may just go back to the original formula.

Depending on your budget, LOccitane products are amazing too. Cruelty free, really good quality ingredients. And you'll smell divine.

Amazon customers are also angry:

Palmer's skin therapy oil or Bio-Oil.  Both work great.  And you don't have Clorox-induced slime.  [:'(]

xxblushesxx -> RE: Burt's Bees (2/15/2012 8:06:36 PM)

Lush!! They only use fair trade products, all natural, and they have some WONDERFUL products!

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Burt's Bees (2/15/2012 8:12:08 PM)

I like Lush also. The massage bars are amazing.

poise -> RE: Burt's Bees (2/15/2012 8:25:31 PM)

I adore Lush products as well, and I think you would be satisfied with their
Ro's Argan Body conditioner as a replacement for Burt's Bees.
I apply it while in the shower, just like a hair conditioner, but for skin! [:D]

I wish it came in a scent other than rose!

Have you looked at Dr. Bronners? They are pretty serious about their products, and are all organic and fair trade. They are definitely a company that stands behind what they do (there is even a documentary about the founder.) I would be really really really shocked if they ever sold the company. I was somewhat addicted to their tea tree classic liquid for a while.

I don't know about your area but I have found at least some of their products in every health store I have walked into, and if you aren't adverse to Target they have a selection as well.

Sorry to hear your Burt's Bees woes, I noticed a while ago when I had to stock up on lip balm again that it seemed different and wasn't as good. Sorry to hear the rest of the line has gone down the tubes.

Some time after General Mills bought Cascadian Farms they reformulated Purely Os by adding sugar, molasses, and corn. Regular customers were PISSED! http://blog.cascadianfarm.com/category/food/whole-grain-cereal-healthy-breakfast.aspx

That was in 2009 - they've finally changed it again:

https://cascadianfarm.com/sweepstakes/Registration.aspx

In 2009, we changed our recipe for Honey Nut O’s & Purely O’s® and once it hit shelves, many of you let us know that you didn’t like the change. We listened and we’ve given both cereals a makeover. Honey Nut O’s now has no corn added and Purely O’s® is back to 1g of sugar and no corn added. Since you were nice enough to share your thoughts, we’d like to share too. Enter below for a chance to win both of our newly formulated cereals.

Wow, those amazon reviews are SUUPER negative. The stink factor is pretty unanimous. They were probably trying to make it smell nutty and natural, but obviously missed the mark.
How infuriating. Maybe lots of negative customer reviews will get through to them.

kalikshama -> RE: Burt's Bees (2/16/2012 4:41:25 AM)

I developed chemical sensitivities after working in a building for two years that turned out to have toxic mold. I've avoided artificial fragrance since 1999. My Mom had some Burt's Bees shampoo and conditioner in her shower and I used it without reading the label as I thought BB was a safe brand. It wasn't horrific enough to require reshampooing my hair with another shampoo, but I did notice it for hours.

LaTigresse -> RE: Burt's Bees (2/16/2012 7:04:18 AM)

FR

I appreciate everyone's contributions to this thread. I've found replacements for the two products I used regularly. The brand was one that I was passionate about. I used to put their stuff in Xmas stockings and gift baskets. For me to give a product as personal as that as a gift, tells a lot about how much I love it and want to share something I love with the people I love.

I've taken several paths to let Clorox know how horrible I think their changes are. Whether or not it makes a difference matters less to me than letting other people know. I think consumers have a right to know what the companies, that make the stuff they buy, are doing.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Burt's Bees (2/16/2012 7:18:52 AM)

Thank you for posting this. I couldn't understand why the Burt's Bees shampoos and conditioners that I've been using have become increasingly difficult to find, and I did some research after reading your post, and they are phasing the old ones out entirely, and introducing new "re-formulated" ones (i.e., with an ingredient list twice as long and with many more things that I can't pronounce, let alone know what they are, or why they are necessary when the old formulations worked just fine.) I guess they can make more money by "re-formulating" with cheaper (and generally less safe) ingredients. It really bugs me when this happens because my skin and hair react to so many things, that I spend effort and money to find things that are simpler than average, and that work, and then they change everything around. And it is usually because they can make more money changing the product. Humph!

Kalikshama, I'm surprised the shampoo & conditioner (if they were original ones) bothered you, but then, so much of this is extremely individual when you have sensitivities. I know many products that work for my friends, but don't always work for me, and vice versa. I'm hoping it was a re-formulation that you were using!
