I was just curious to know if anyone else here has read "Fifty Shades of Grey" and what their thoughts on it are.

I loved the books, but as I was reading them, I got the feeling that Christian wasn't really a Dominant at all. I feel torn, because I loved his character. I think he was more of a possessive, jealous, control freak than anything else. He had deep emotional issues, and I don't think that helped him develop into a Master of any sort. He just needed the control, and this was his outlet for it.

I'm still trying to figure it all out in my mind to be honest! My friends and I are having a book club on the series, and I want to be able to represent the BDSM side positively. None of my friends know that I'm sub, but I want to make sure they understand that just being controlling and liking "kinky fuckery" doesn't make one a Master.

I just read the first book and I loved it. I like how it is a love story primarily, the D/s is ancillary.

I am not sure why you don't think Christian is really a Dom; I certainly see him as one. A very romantic, obsessive and flawed Dom, but that is precisely what makes him so fascinating.

The only thing I do not like is the assumption that one has to have had some traumatic past in order to be involved in BDSM.

I think he hes a Type A, dominant personality, but that doesn't mean that someone is a Dom or Master. He is so controlling and possessive. He stalks and has Ana followed. I think many women might find him a romantic character, and they might look at all his characteristics as what the BDSM world is. It's not though. In so many ways he's pathalogical. Yes. I know it's because of his past, which makes him seem like a more sympathetic character and more attractive to the reader. This does not in any way excuse his obsessive and controlling actions.

I definitely loved him when I first read the books, but as I reread them and read other reviews, especially from Masters and subs, I feel that there is not much of a Master in him. Just my opinion, and I would like to hear more from others about their take. I'm also needing some discussion questions for my book club.

I am reading the first one. I think most submissives would like it as it describes how we are and it's nice to feel vindicated in a sense and acknowledged.
The male character in the story had been a sub for years. I tend to find dojminant men who have said they have been sub probably aren't inherently dom in the way I need. I felt submissive all my life from age 5 or younger and the doms who fit with me tend to have been much the same, in their DNA never changed , so that put me off a bit from that character.

Secondly, he was abused as a child so just like The Secretary we have yet another book saying our sexuality is caused by abuse, whereas mine is just how I am, just as gay men are born gay and it is not because of how their mothers treated them.

Notwithstanding those two points it is a perfectly readable light read and it illustrates well the importance of safety and the fact a dom both cares and has his way, that with getting what he needs he also has duties and responsibilities which is how I see D/s relationships as mutually giving.

I am not sure the character is very sub. She seems at the point I have reached to push against his control a lot whereas I suspect a lot of us who are sub would just fall into it and love it, even if it were a first time, because we're made like that.

I agree. I don't think Ana is submissive either. She likes the kinky fuckery of the relationship a LOT, but she is not a natural submissive. This is another reason why I don't think Christian is a Master. In my experience, true Dominants need to be with women who are submissive to complete who they are (and vice versa). Granted, there is a power exhange going on, but I think it's more play than living the lifestyle.

So, is this truly a book about BDSM? I don't even know if the author intended it to be...not sure. If she did, she is just taking all the cliches and sterotypes of the lifestyle and using them for her story, and I hope my friends who are reading this don't think that these books are a true portrayal of BDSM.

Okay, using the link posted by *someone lol* I spent most of the afternoon reading it. It was a struggle mainly because the writing is pretty bad, the conversation is horribly stilted and the author bounces too often into almost purple prose. Getting past the writing and to the story itself wasn't much of an improvement either.

Personally I'm really tired of the whole virgin thing, that whole fantasy of the pure innocent woman being 'the one' that breaks the Dominant and ultimately changes him.

In every direction you can go, I've read much better erotica. None of this felt the least bit realistic, all of it felt drawn from stereotypical romance novels with a bit of kink thrown in. It felt cliched, it was boring and I'm bummed I spent my Sunday trying to get through to something worthwhile because that never happened.

Yay Camille, exactly, the writing is quite bad, the story very predictable and unbelievable. I wondered about the big buzz around it, and can only shake my head, I mean you have to be damned repressed to find that book so great, if that's the brand new hot thing, then I guess it explains the success of Judith Krantz and other bonk busters
