I've read all three. LOVE the series.. It's like giving all of my vanilla friends a peek into my world...and they like it!

Why buy, when for a little searching on the internet, you can find the original PDF? It's a fanfiction, based on Twilight characters. For the books that Amazon is selling, they've just changed the characters names.

That being said... There were a couple of parts that I really enjoyed, and I can see why your vanilla friends like the series. It's an introductory tale into the world of submission... And above all that, it's a romance.

I'd have been disappointed if I'd paid for these. But since I got them for free, they were well worth the money

Edited to add a link to the pdf... http://www.epubbud.com/read.php?g=RTHUKGUX&p=1

There was a segment on The Today Show about it. The female family counselor was cool about it. Dr Drew was an idiot. He stated that people who like BDSM are most likely child abusers as well.

Freaking paranoid. He obviously has NO idea.

I can't remember the other recent Dr Drew idiocy. Wasn't any of this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr_Drew#Criticism_and_praise

In 2009, Pinsky drew criticism from experts for publicly offering professional opinions of celebrities he has never met or personally examined, based on media accounts, and has also drawn the ire of some of those celebrities. Following comments Pinsky made about actor Tom Cruise's belief in Scientology and Lindsay Lohan's drug abuse, Cruise's lawyer compared Pinsky to Joseph Goebbels, and Lohan posted on Twitter, "I thought REAL doctors talked to patients in offices behind closed doors."[38] Pinsky also received criticism in April 2010 for stating that he would frame Lohan for illegal drug use in order to force her into a sobriety program if he were her father.[39] Pinsky responded in the same publication that his remark was intended as hyperbole and a "flight of journalistic excess," not a suggestion as a treatment modality in any way. He stated his intent was to drive home the point about bringing negative consequences to bear for a person dying of addiction when all other options have been exhausted.[40]

Pinsky, who admits in his 2009 book, The Mirror Effect, that he scored a 16 on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (average is 18 for celebrities), and shares several traits with the "closet narcissist", asserts that he was never motivated by fame to become a media figure, but from a desire to educate the public, especially the youth, on the medical facts distorted by the media. Patient Andy Dick, who made Pinsky his primary care physician, disputes the accusation that Pinsky is motivated by a desire for fame, insisting that Pinsky "really is just this unbelievably caring guy. He really is. He’s almost too caring."[41] Sex Rehab alumnus Duncan Roy, however, has criticized Pinsky's competence. While Roy concedes that Pinsky is highly skilled at treating drug and alcohol addiction, he claims that Pinsky has no knowledge of sex addiction, and that he merely recycled the words and ideas of Jill Vermiere, MFT, one of the therapists on Sex Rehab, who Roy says, along with Dr. John Sealy, were the true therapeutic forces behind his recovery.[42]

Defending the practice of paying addicts to attend rehab, producer Pinsky says, "My whole thing is bait and switch. Whatever motivates them to come in, that’s fine. Then we can get them involved with the process."[43]

i never paid much attention to him anyway. i know he is into rehabbing stars for cash and i imagine fame.
Now i KNOW i'll never pay attention to him unless he is commenting on BDSM. Stupid ass.

i would have thought that he would have been more up to date before he shot off his mouth. Many stars are coming out so maybe he'll conveniently adjust his thinking.

I was REALLY disappointed in Dr Drew also. I never thought he was so closed minded.

Aileen, the books are really entertaining!

I just got them recently. Haven't started them yet as I'm finishing up a few I've been wanting to read first, but I'm looking forward to digging into them soon. I've seen tons of reviews on each book, quite a variety from love to hate and it has me very curious to see for myself and discover if I like them or not. I don't tend to go by reviews as to whether or not to read something, since all too often I have hated books or series that others raved about and loved ones others hated.

It can be found free online, I believe.
No need to pay ten bucks or so for
self published Twilight fan fiction.
Though fond of vampire porn I dislike
Twilight deeply. I know many love it
and to each their on.
I found the bits of Shades I read as
irritating as Twilight but worse.
I don't doubt here and there you could
find some good horny bits.
It's a appeal is said to be Edward and Bella
with whips and chains.
There are lots of controversies about the
thing. The author was given a big boost
by coming out of the large Twilight fandom.
But unless you're from the fandom world,
a writer or a steady reader if romantic
erotica you probably won't be very interested
in that drama.
What bdsm people might take offense to is
the way bdsm is thought to be characterized.
The title refers to the male lead the Dom
who says he is fucked up in fifty ways
or something. He comes from an abused
background. The female lead is vanilla.
His interests demonstrate he is fucked up.
I believe at some point he gives up caning
to please her and indicate how much he
cares for her. Haven't read enough to
really say but a lot of readers who are into
bdsm say it is portrayed negatively in
the book.
He's a tortured male anti hero in the romance
novel tradition. She's the good innocent
girl who is going to save him from his
demons. It's a romance with bdsm trappings.
And there's nothing wrong with that but
there are any number of better written
books fit that description but don't go.
the there's something wrong with people
into this sort of thing route.
There's criticism that a good number of
writers of romantic bdsm get their
knowledge from other books of romantic
bdsm. General consensus is the author
falls into that group. There's also irritation
and surprise by people who read and write
in the genre who either know about it
firsthand that this book is getting so much
attention. It seems to have made inroads
with people who don't read a lot of erotica
or aren't involved with bdsm.
Twilght YA novel became very popular
outside it's tended audience to so in this
the fanfiction is following the original.
And as with Twilight any criticism of it
will bring hysterical reactions from those
who love it and think it's thing evah!
I'm not stirring up that nest of vipers.
My apathy towards it lays as much in my
apathy towards Twilight as anything.
If bdsm is portrayed negatively and the
Dom is painted as a messed up guy
that's lousy to.
I 've heard people who like it say there
was no need for three books that it
should have been only one. But fanfiction
has a tendency to go on and on.
Another criticism is that's it's full of
fanfiction tropes that to people who
don't read fanfiction can be very annoying.
This thing was self published, no editor
but beta readers.
I would never pay to read self published
fanfiction or not more than a dollar and
she's selling it for more than that.
It got on the Today show because the
book has gained popularity in some
Manhattan circles. It's readership
like Twilight is overwhelmingly female.
It seems to only be shocking and daring
to people who know nothing about bdsm
and/or have never read a horny romance
book with kink thrown or not thrown
in for that matter.
And there has been criticism that people
are reading it and thinking their getting
the inside scoop on bdsm though I don't
think the author has claimed that.

I meant to say
There's also irritation and surprise by
people who read and write the genre
and are into bdsm or have realistic
knowledge of it that the book is
getting so much attention.

hysterical reaction from those that
think it's the best thing evah!

And, yes I know there are people who are into bdsm
who love the books.
The personal reactions I know of have
all been mixed. The women, and I only
know women who've read it, liked various
parts of three books to various degrees.
They all like Christian and disliked Ana.
None really found it a good rendering of
a bdsm relationship and some were very
annoyed by it.
Others were annoyed by the writing
overall.
My own reaction to the parts I've read
was to cringe at the female voice.
But Bella makes me cringe to.
The women I'm referring to personally
are all submissive women in D/s and
M/s relationships. Of course they don't
speak for everyone. YMWV and all that.
But the online debate indicates the reaction
to it is anything but a gray area.
People online at least seem to either
hate it with a passion or love it with
passion. I haven't read enough to have
come to a personal conclusion about
anything other than the voice and
writing was annoying to me.
It's a work of fiction, it's meant to
entertain and give people pleasure.

The link that I gave brings you to the original fan fiction Master of the Universe. The story itself is exactly the same as 50 Shades of Grey, other than the names have been changed from Edward and Bella to Annastasia and Christian. If she hadn't changed the names of both the title (remember that old cartoon with He-Man) and the characters, she would have been sued for copyright infringement.

On second thought, it may not be exactly the same... I've heard the tampon scene was pulled when it was published under the 50 Shades title.

Ah, so it is. The formatting from your link was making me crazy. I found the downloadable epub and have sucked it into my Kindle. I'm going to read the Edward and Bella version because, while not my favorite vampire tale by a long shot, it will be fun imaging the characters as such.

Harry Potter is all about confronting fears, finding inner strength, and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.
