About a decade ago, our Republican (Republic?) friends stopped calling the Democratic Party by its long-standing name and began referring to the "Democrat Party." Does anyone know why? Does it sound as goofy to anyone else's ear as it does to mine? It always makes me think the speaker/writer was out sick the day the class learned about forming adjectives.

Bonus free fact: In older sources, the Democratic Party was sometimes referred to as the Democracy, but that seems to have gone out of fashion.

Because they don't want people thinking that the 'Disloyal Opposition' is 'Democratic', or anything like that. Simple revisionism.

To draw a distinction between a philosophy of governance, and a political party.

I mean, I could just habitually call them the Whores, or something, but I'm kinda liking the shortage of gold bordered notes in my inbox these days.

Doesn't the capital letter do that, just as it does for Republican (GOP) versus republican (no monarchy)?

I would think that this is likely a calculated rhetorical move (but boy, has the GOP lost control of what was once a well-oiled political rhetoric machine). "Democratic Party" seems to connote a party of ideals, whereas "Democrat Party" seems to connote merely a group of people, maybe even pretenders or demagogues.

Who cares if it is Democrat or Democratic? It should be renamed to something else. I am not clear what they represent these days. The party is a mosaic of different things. There are corporate Democrats in charge (Clintonites, Obama, hypocrites, pharisees), pseudo-progressives (H. Clinton, progressive Caucus, inside traders Pelosi etc.), pink professors (Chomsky etc.), true progressives (different groups and people with no real power. The list goes on. Somebody probably has done more detailed work. This is my impression.

Also, reading Orwell left me particularly curious about how language is used politically.

ETA: And our GOP brethren obviously care, or they wouldn't have bothered to make the change.

Rember the good old days where one disliked an elected offical, but at least showed the due respect to the office enough to state the person's correct title and name? There are those that did not like former President Ronald Reagan, but just as I placed it (minus the 'former' part) would speak AND THEN let loose with their rant. Back in those days, there was a lot more civity in the politics, from the standpoint of showing proper respect of the office holder. Now, we have many conservatives (inlcuding some on this very forum) that either dont know how, or cant show respect to the current President of the United States of America: Mr. Obama (i.e. President Obama).

I dislike Rep. Michelle Bachmann, but I do make sure to show both the proper title and respect for her name. I dont like her politics, ideas, or thoughts, BUT, when posting this dislike I do not behave in a childish manner to also mess up her name. Spelling errors aside, its often pretty obvious from the spirit of one's rant, if the spelling of the person's name was a 'goof' verses 'a slam'. Often times, I'm turned off to what the person stated simply because they can not behave in a civil manner long enough to show a decent level of respect for the office. Those elected office holders are part of the goverment. And its a well known fact that many lives have been sacrificed to keep the land of the free and brave together. All undone by persons physically over the age of eaighteen but mentally and/or the maturity of a nine year old!

Same goes for political parties. Its the 'Democratic Party' not the 'Democrat Party'. 'Democrat Party' doesnt even roll of the tongue that well compared to the 'Democratic Party'. If persons dont like the DNC, that's one thing, but at the very least, show you possess a decent level of maturity to the rant.

To be honest, I'm not sure those "good old days" ever actually existed. Opponents called John Adams "His Rotundity," and that may have been one of the kinder epithets of the 1800 election.

Wiki has a page about it. With a bunch of footnotes listed. It started much more than a decade ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democrat_Party_(phrase)

I know that wiki can be changed by individuals, but this one seems well annotated. It appears that multiple people have researched this question through the years. Including William Safire and John Lyman.

To be honest I think its a tad bit sensitive to consider it genuinely negative. If it was orwellian they might have tried to label the Democrats the "Dictatocrats"/"Dictateocrats" or something like that! In the UK the Whigs took the piss by labeling the Conservatives the "Tories" after Tory Island off Northern Ireland, where the "natives" were always rebelling.

Yep .. their bullshit doesn't fly unless they can surround it with ugly sounding names or sentiments. They fail to realize however that they've gotten so vulgar they even scare off my Dad's old buddy and once, every bit as effective a weapon for the GOP, John McLaughlin. John's said both publicly and privately that the Republican Party has lost much of it's integrity in order to win for the wrong reasons.
He feels that allowing media people to rise beyond commentator status is likely to wreck the party. And I am pretty sure we know who he's talking about when he says that.

You'll love this. You know how I have that older bro that retired from the SS 8 years ago. Well when he was in highschool, it was the height of the British Invasion. He and 3 other local RI kids formed a band named "The Tories" and they were quite popullar. And my brother got suspended from part of his Jr. year for having hair that was about the length of Moe Howard in the Three Stooges and maybe half an inch shorter than Ringo star. Same school 8 years later, My best friend accidentally set fire to 2 feet of his own hair doing a bluestone solution experiment in sophmore chemistry
