littlewonder -> Drenched in Sweat (5/19/2012 6:19:13 PM)

So for about the past 3 months or so, no matter where I'm at, even in bed, I'm drenched in sweat. I go out for a walk and even if it's only 60 degrees out, I'm soaked. Today I went out, it was about 80 degrees and I had to find a restroom to fix myself up because everyone was looking at me because I literally had sweat dripping from my chin and my hair looked like I had stepped out of the shower.

Now before you say menopause or menopause, I'm not so sure. My periods are still the same as always, and I don't really have any of the other symptoms that go along with it. I'm thinking maybe it's due to my medication of celexa and wellbutrin but I've been taking that for a long time and any side effects I had with it would be passed by now from the tolerance in my system.

So, basically what I'm asking is, does anyone deal with perspiring to this extent? If you do, how do you deal with it in public without everyone thinking you've got some weird disease? LOL

I've tried the cohosh people have said helps. It hasn't helped me at all. Any other suggestions? If this is how my entire summer is going to go, I'm never going to leave the house.

LW, have you had your thyroid checked recently?

Tantriqu -> RE: Drenched in Sweat (5/19/2012 6:26:59 PM)

OMG, talk to your doctor. It can be simple stuff like thyroid and other hormones, and indeed dreadful stuff like TB and AIDS and heart disease.
Cohosh can also interfere with your meds, so never take anything without talking to both your doc and your pharmacist.

Don't suffer!
If it's 'only' perimenopause, wearing layers of silk, plenty of exercise, drinking cool water and avoiding caffeine can help, and of course, hormone replacement.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Drenched in Sweat (5/19/2012 6:38:36 PM)

I have something very similar - even my head would sweat. My doc put me on a combo estrogen\testosterone, and it decreased quite significantly. Of course, mine was caused by surgical menopause, but i work with a bunch of women about my age (54) and we all have heat intolerance to some extent.

If i want to get anything done at home the temperature has to be under 70 degrees. I have become used to the feeling of sweat running down my back (yuk). It doesn't mean i like it, just that i can tolerate it.

If hormones are causing your symptoms - and you can be early menopause without any changes in your periods - talk to your doc.

Yes, when I first started going to the doctor I have, she checked my thyroid last year and it came back normal.

She also checked for HIV and all that and she said it's unlikely I'm going through menopause. So I have no other ideas left. I have another appointment with her next month...I can't get in until then, so I'll talk to her again.

Hm.

I recall once having seen a man who was sweating profusely, continuously, like a flood. I inquired as to its cause and he told me that he had been treated against cancer.

It may be that your medication affects the temperature control center in your brain.

Can it be that you have had a heart attack?
Can it be that your blood vessels are constricted (by the medication), preventing transport of the core heat to the surface of the body? Do you smoke?

littlewonder -> RE: Drenched in Sweat (5/19/2012 8:54:09 PM)

Dude, you're on ignore so thankfully I can't read your drivel. [:)]

Well, then I rather suspect that your condition is not desperate at all.

FlashinaPan -> RE: Drenched in Sweat (5/20/2012 11:25:10 AM)

My friend suffers from something very similar. For her, they're hot flashes from early menopause kick started by chemo. Because her cancer is estrogen binding, she's unable to use the most frequent course of treatment, which is estrogen-based. Instead, one of the SSRIs has an off-label use of reducing hot flashes. Maybe one of those treatments might be an option for you.

Missokyst -> RE: Drenched in Sweat (5/20/2012 12:26:09 PM)

regarding symptoms.. not all women have the same "other symptoms" you may read about.
I had one day of sweats. And just a small flash of them in the course of a day... then nothing. No other symptoms. No increase or decrease in my cycle, which has admittedly always been unsual, sometimes not showing up for years before it returns. I was on my cycle when the sweats hit me. Then nothing.
That was years ago.
If your thyroid is fine (mine is tricky), it still might be menopause.
Sounds like a doctor visit is in order.

Yeah, I have my monthly appointment with her at mid june and I plan to talk to her then. As for my period, they're pretty much the same time as always give or take a few days or maybe a week at the most depending on my exercise, diet, etc....

Thankfully today wasn't too bad. At least it was manageable but man, yesterday was awful!

I was experiencing the same thing, though it has thankfully seemed to subside for the moment.  Not having a washer and dryer has caused me to have an overabundance of sheets, since they were constantly getting soaked.  Not fun.

Anyway, your thyroid was fine last year, but you weren't having this problem then, right?  Ask her to check it again.  It may be "unlikely" that you are going through menopause, but it isn't impossible.

Tell your doctor what is going on and how much it is bothering you.  I know how bad it sucks, I have been experiencing it off and on for the last few years.  At one point, my dermatologist prescribed something called "Hypercare" which is a prescription anti-perspirant.  It doesn't keep you from feeling like you are burning up, but it does help with the perspiration from it.  I have used it in places other than simply my armpits, though it can cause a little irritation sometimes.

You have my sympathies on this.  Until you get to the doctor, all I can suggest is to drink LOTS of water (icy cold of course).  Also, I found that popsicles have been a little helpful and comforting when the hot flash strikes.

littlewonder -> RE: Drenched in Sweat (5/21/2012 6:58:06 AM)

That's funny about the popsicles. I actually have been eating those like crazy for about the past month because they help lol. And I'll ask my doctor about the anitperspirant but I have eczema and really sensitive skin so I'm not so sure about it but I will ask her. I plan to ask her if she'll take some bloodwork for my thyroid again and for menopause. We'll see what she says.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I told Master yesterday that it looks like I'll be wearing extremely light and airy sundresses all summer because anything heavier and it's soaked lol. I don't think he'll have a problem with that. [:D]

Perimenopause can start about 15 years before you actually hit menopause proper. So unless she tests your hormones to see where you're at, she can't tell if you're starting peri.

However, if you know when your mother and other female relatives went through menopause, then deduct 15 from that and see if you're starting peri.

You beat me to this comment. Perimenopause is something that can start quite early, so I'm not quite sure why the OP's doctor is so sure that it is not menopause related.

While the average age of menopause itself is in one's early 50s, perimenopause can start as early as one's early 30s. My friends who are going through perimenopause have a wide variety of symptoms, but no one person I know has them all. Different symptoms are affecting my friends. For some it is weight gain. For others, temperature sensitivity. Etc.

mummyman321 -> RE: Drenched in Sweat (5/24/2012 4:48:44 PM)

There a lots of conditions that can cause profuse sweating. Luckily many are easily treatable. Best thing you can do is a trip to the family doctor to discuss your symptoms. I suspect a blood test and physical would be in order.

Duskypearls -> RE: Drenched in Sweat (5/24/2012 8:15:26 PM)

Right you are, gals, I began Peri-Menopause at 31. I'm 56 and have been in full-blown, ass-kicking Menopause for about 15 years now. No cakewalk, that's for sure.

Hmm, depends on what she considers normal, I went through hell and high water in the UK, they told me my thyroid results were "normal" but they weren't for me and what they should be (only got 10% of my thyroid left), so I'd ask to see the result and what exactly she checked for, which T's and all that...

littlewonder -> RE: Drenched in Sweat (5/24/2012 10:00:02 PM)

Oh she always always shows me test results even if I don't want to see them. She's the type of dr who wants you to understand everything so both she and I can figure out what works for me and doesn't. We've had to do this because I've tried over 10 different sleeping pills and none have yet to work for me, the same with my anti-depressive meds. So when she takes tests from me she shows me the results and explains them to me.

She just hasn't run any tests yet for menopause. She's a young dr so I think she doesn't see it as a major problem. I figure if I can't get it across to her next month then I'll just make an appointment with another doctor. I still like her though and plan to stay with her for everything else I need.

Thank goodness for the breezes we've been having the past few days here lol. At least I've been able to go out and keep it rather manageable.

My mom started menopause at around 45 and my sister who is a year younger than me (I'm 40), started menopause two years ago. Yes I told my dr this but again she seems to think it's not a big deal.
