Why is it nessecary to compete?

Why is it necessary for YOU to "price shop" when snagging that 16-inch, powder-purple man-dildo with the kick-start and G.I. Joe grip that you've had your heart set on?!!  Well golly-gee, Gilligan, I guess that answers your question, doesn't it?!!  Or maybe YOU think everyone should just sell all the SAME products/services for the same price -- yanno... in the interest of "fairness" and all?!!  Oh wait... about 3 seconds after that happens, then YOU will be right back here bitching-up-a-blizzard about how all those EEEEEVUL CORPORATIONS are "price fixing" -- dashing all your grand dildo-dreams to the ground.  Much to your likely great dismay, in the REAL WORLD... you don't get a "participation trophy".

since the OP was about Wal-mart screwing over workers, I'll mention its not just the distribuotion centers, they've done it IN the retail stores as well....here in Minnesota, Walmart got sued with a class-action lawsuit by the state and the employees and wal-mart lost. Numerous infractions with employee timecards, breaks, lunch times, worker hours and I think even got what some employees got fired for was included in the suit, and was proven that wal-mart violated the laws for years.

looks like wal-mart learned from the lawsuit and is now using third parties to do what it got caught doing.

Hmmmm....I wonder why it is that WalMart is the (World's) most successful retailer?

(Could it be that the bulk of America is shopping there?).

Nawwwwwwww......

sure,.... and there are desparate people who ether work for low wages or welfare too The bitching thats going on ur deaf ears... is about HOW the retailer is becoming the giant it is.... and that IS.... to the detriment many of the people who work for them.

Wwe're enjoying low prices due to the bad worker & working enviroments and wages from the supply chain to the retail level. mom & pop stores or small retailers get buried in the process making them the only game in town most times....

Not too much different than enjoying clothing made from a sweat shop staffed by children in a third-world country. We just need people dieing from heat exaustion and then the outrage will catch up with them.

unless romney gets in then that will be open season on workers.

OP, you're in fantasy land, good luck with various forms of Marxism.

we need to compete because that's how humans evolve.

haven't you ever seen the classic H.G. Wells film The Time Machine?

although science fiction, i think it's a good metaphor for what happens when humanity gets lazy. those are the creatures that fed on lazy stupid humans like cattle.

also, you created this topic to complain that Walmart is fucking us over, and many have shown you're wrong; have you dropped that silly argument?

Marini, I am a Maoist, which is an updated form of Marxism (yes, the philosophy that throws conservatives into seizures). I know all too well the problems with capitalism, and the need to replace it with something better. If you would like, I can share some literature with you.

Something better is the death of 40-70 million people, famine, mass suicide, and political persecution? Oh, and let's throw in the destruction of cultural artifacts and destroying religious sites.

Wow.

Just wow.

I think that I can do without your "Great Leap Forward."

I think it is already open season on workers in the United States, it's been that way for a while, it's just getting worse as we have more people vying for fewer jobs.

If Romney gets elected, we're sitting ducks.

Too late for that, we are looking around.
At this point, it will be a miracle if we get any sort of "real" national health care in the States, anytime soon.

And if you're just going to accept that, you probably don't deserve "real" national healthcare in the first place.
I mean we have a vassal state where we're all slaves of her majesty to excuse that. You Americans, on the other hand, are supposed to be rugged individualists who take shit from nobody.

You must be new here, I think I am one of the last people here "wanting to accept" anything.
I have never been one to accept the status quo.

I am not sure about that chip on your shoulder, but you seem a bit quarrelsome lately.

Joke, dear. That vicious English humour, remember?
I just find the spectacle of people who insist that they're nobody's bitches and blather about how they kicked King George out of the country making excuses for the insurance providers you have an understandable problem with highly amusing.
(Probably shouldn't have aimed that one at you, though. Mea culpa.)

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, but that figure varies depending on where you live. A few weeks ago, the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) released their annual housing report documenting the disparity between what minimum wage workers can afford to pay for rent and how much rent costs. While it’s not surprising that these workers have trouble paying their rent, it is shocking to see just how big the gap is in many states. For example, in Hawaii, the most expensive state, a person needs to make $31.68 an hour to afford a two-bedroom apartment. (An apartment is considered affordable if rent and utilities cost under 30 percent of a person’s income.) For someone making minimum wage, that would mean working 175 hours — which isn’t even possible (since there are only 168 hours in a week). The disparity exists for every state and commonwealth with the shortest work week in Puerto Rico, where you would still need to work 55 hours to make the rent.

thats exactly what I mean about screwing it up... I dont think anyone knows whats in that 1,000 pages that is supposed to be the new US national health care system or how much the bloody thing will actually cost.. I seriously doubt the US can get it to work as promised.. or anywhere near that..

YSG, To answer your question. Why do we compete ,for money.? Yes. If you're company doesn't make money you go out of business and the employees that work for you do not have a job to support their families.

As stated earlier, in most towns that gets a Walmart, thats MUCH easier said than done, after only a short period of time all the "mom-&-pop"stores and even alot of specialty stores bite the dust because they cant compete with wages or prices,... here in Twin Cities, The newest Ads are touting the as much as 18% percent food price difference on long time Minnesota original company & better wage paying and food quality CUB foods. They've done the same aiming at the local garden shops. I'll not be surprised seeing a shot at the local Hardware & lumber stores

Dont u have a clue that wherever walmat goes - its to wipe out any and ALL others..... to be the only game in town. there have been fights to keep Wal-mart out of some towns,...but in the end Walmart finds a way in or close enough to affect the retail target area anyway.

And of course, there are usually enough people like u who dont care enough about the long term repercussions of Walmart's Business model that it occurs anyway.

We have a love/hate relationship with wal mart. We hate shopping there but we get stuck with only that option.

I've had this same basic Wal Mart discussion with close friends and one thing that was mentioned is one of the ways Wal Mart is able to sell for such a low price is property tax abatements. It was also mentioned that they get deals off or pay no sales taxes in many places though they do collect them. Does anyone know whats up with that ? I can't believe they can collect for sales tax and then keep the money.
