Center for Disease Control herpes fact sheet hate to ruin your fun, but those aliments commonly called 'cold sores'; i've heard as many as 30-80% of the American population has them, are herpes.
unprotected sex is doing a good job getting that last two out of ten people infected with herpes. oh wait, protected sex does not necessarily protect you from this aliment, one that is contagious without any signs of infection, one that easily can escape out of the sides of a condom.
lame.

My sub/wife and I have never used protection in our 24+ years of marriage.  And we are extremely monogamous.

my Master and i are in a committed relationship, however He is free to use/play with other females as He pleases, and He regularly "shares" me with other Men, often (tho not always) sexually. condoms are never used for oral sex of any kind...it seems to me that it'd be rather pointless, as others have stated. my Master and i are both tested for all stds regularly, and He demands testing from certain others who may use me, but to say that it applies 100% would be a lie. we are well aware of the health risks, but as a slave i have no choice or say in such matters, and as Master He can do with me what He pleases.

I use latex for oral/anal pretty religiously. I've never done without, on either side, and I have no interest in it.

I mostly use latex when someone goes down on me, though that's negotiable sometimes. I figure my risk is fairly low, so in some cases I'm willing to skip it if my partner requests. But frankly, I'm not that big on oral so it's not much of a loss.

I mostly abstain from going down on my female partners. I have used and sometimes use dental dams or saran wrap, but it's different. So different that most women I've known haven't particularly enjoyed it, much less come from it. It's an interesting diversion occasionally, but that's about all.

I used to be willing to go down on one regular partner without latex at a time, but it's been some time since I've had a partner like that.

Just a comment about testing.  Everyone is all about testing.  I hope everyone realizes there is a time element in the testing process.  Antibodies do not appear immediately after exposure and can take days and months before they will show on a test.  So, just because someone can give proof to you that they are "clean", they are only "clean" in that moment.  You need to ask about partners and last contact.

The same is true for HPV, condoms help but it is transmitted by skin contact not fluids. Many who carry non-wart varieties of HPV don't know they have it and they may claim they are "clean" when they aren't. This is why 75-80% of sexually active adults have some variety of HPV.

now, I understand WHY you would want to have protected oral sex but then I think...then what's the point?

I mean, my pleasure from doing it aside, it's mostly about his pleasure.  I honestly wish I could know what it feels like when things are happening to a guy's member when sexual acts are taking place.  Even putting over a thin layer of latex has GOT to cut off some of the feeling.  I'm all for the sexual healthiness but if you lose the pleasure you get from sexual acts in the process, then there doesn't seem to be much point.

Tried to edit but it didn't work...

speaking of HPV, why is it that it's mostly geared toward women?  I realize that men do have the possibility of contracting it if they engage in lots of anal sex but still, it seems like women really get nature's consolation prizes when it comes to sex.

With women, the HPV is a much bigger concern because it has been linked to a cause of cervical cancer. And like with many viruses and bacteria, it spreads easily in the vagina because the environment isn't as hostile. The vagina is slightly acidic and does have antibodies, but it isn't that strong. And the reason why is because if it were any stronger, the sperm would die and fertilization would be impossible.

This is also why women are much more likely to develop yeast or urinary tract infections. The region is very vulnerable to biological attack.

We're in a long term monogamous relationship so we're fluid bonded. Both of us had been without a partner for well over a year before we met. But we got tested anyway.

From the responses so far it seems the message about minimising your risks is getting through - at least to those people here, however I would like to add a couple of points.

Herpes is contractable from kissing, in fact skin to skin contact of any kind, which is why it is so prevalent and while genital herpes are contracted by contact in that area, a simple social kiss can give you herpes.  You can get it kissing your granny (but I don't know of anyone who uses a dental dam for that).  I know I had my first cold sore before I ever became sexually active.

While it's commendable to limit your sexual activity to a 'monogamous' relationship or 'tested' partners, this relies on trust and it's great to trust someone.  I myself am in such a relationship, but I don't kid myself that I am 100% protected.  I still get tested occasionally - why? - well people do lie and social research indicates that many people in relationships have sexual encounters outside of that relationship.  I limit my trust to not using protection.  As someone else said, I have responsibilities to people other than myself and I think it's the responsible thing to do to monitor my health, just as I get a Pap smear or my blood pressure checked when I go to the doctor.
