Thanks for the tips, everyone. I did really great, the last two months. Gave up sodas without even a pang, but these last few weeks the sugar cravings have been hitting me hard.

I think I was a bear in a previous life, and my body is trying to prepare to hibernate. Ugh.

To be honest, I am a little bummed now, I feel like I'm having to start all over with the sugar cravings, since caving in these last few weeks.

I had a brief window into diabetes, having had gestational diabetes during my last pregnancy. I found that my fat intake had a big impact on my blood sugar numbers. High fat can lead to a higher glucose reading than you expect.

I was recently diagnosed with steroid induced diabetes, but even after being off the steroids increasing my activity and losing weight my blood sugars are still running high. I've lost 20 pounds, have been eating vegetables like mad and watching my carb intake; but sugar is in damn near everything. Even things advertised as "Sugar Free" still have sugar alchohols which have ridculously high carb counts.

First congratulations on losing 20 pounds!  Remember though, that the steroid meds you were taking probably added a great deal to your weight issues, as that is a side effect of the drug.

One of the first misconceptions about people getting type two diabetes is that is all about being overweight, and that is not the case.  Yes, weight can contribute to getting the disease, but it is far from the major cause.  Women who get gestational diabetes are more likely to get type two later in life, and in your case, with a family history of the disease, your diagnosis is not the least bit unusual.

quote:

Sugar Free? PFFT!

You don't mention what your blood sugar levels have been, so it is difficult to really say whether to be as concerned about being completely sugar free or not.  My point is that if your levels are over 200, of course watch your sugar intake.  If they are over 300, you should have more worries than simply your sugar intake.  On the other hand, if your levels are at something like 140, satisfying your sugar craving, within reasonable limits is not a big deal.  You also need to remember that the numbers mean something different whether it is a fasting (as in your wake up in the morning test), or after eating.  Fasting or after eating tells you how your body is processing the sugars, which helps your doctor in figuring out how to treat your disease.

Another very important thing is to remember that type one and type two are very different.  I'm sure with your mother being a brittle diabetic, you are aware of this.  Type one diabetics do not produce any insulin, where type twos' may not produce enough, or any other number of things, but you do produce insulin unlike the type ones'.

I was diagnosed with type two about 3 years ago.  In the beginning it didn't make any difference how I modified my diet, my numbers just wouldn't drop.  I could eat salads 24/7, and still couldn't drop a pound.  Of course, I also have a thyroid issue which added to the problem.  Earlier this year when I was very ill with kidney stones, I couldn't really eat anything without it quickly exiting my body from one end or the other.  Still, my numbers were over 200 on a regular basis.

You say you were diagnosed "recently," but that could be anything from  last month to last spring.  Remember, getting this under control is not going to happen overnight.  You also don't say how your doctor is treating the problem beyond taking you off the steroids.  If you are trying to manage this by diet alone by your doctor's order, your levels are likely not very high, but you might need medication anyway.  Once you get your numbers under control, you might be able to wean off the medication, and manage it by diet alone.  Only time will tell.

As for the sugar cravings, I know for me the minute someone tells me I can't eat a particular thing, there is nothing I want more than that thing, lol.  I don't think ignoring the craving is a great idea.  If you can satisfy your sweet tooth with just a bite or two of something sweet (not everyday of course), it is not going to drive your blood glucose through the roof.

Three years into my diagnosis, even after eating, my blood sugar levels rarely go above 150.  Of course, when I was so ill, I lost 40 pounds, and still have issues with certain foods.  However, I am addicted to Nerds, which is a basically purely sugar candy, lol.  Even with eating those every day, my numbers are still great.  This has only been the last few months after recovering from surgery, but I can't wait for my next A1C, lol.

Don't beat yourself up over your worries about the sugar and carb counts.  Stress can raise your levels as well.  Eat healthy, including snacks and give yourself some time.  Don't forget that if you were on steroid treatment for a significant length of time (which I get the impression you were), you couldn't have just stopped them cold turkey, but had to wean off of them.  So depending on your "recently" there could still be steroids in your body, even if you aren't receiving the benefits of them, which could be adding to trouble controlling the diabetes.

Thanks LL (and everyone else!)

I lose track of time, so I don't remember the exact time. I know I've been on Metformin for 2 1/2 months. My A1C was 9.4 and my sugars were in the high 200's low 300's before the Metformin.
I was weaned off the steroids, I think it took about 2 weeks and that was a couple months before he put me on Metformin. I guess that I've probably been off of the steroids about 5 months give or take.
Not counting the inhaler and other breathing treatments that have small doses of steroids in them. I retest the first week in November, to find out if the Metformin lowered my (A1c) blood sugars enough.

It is just discouraging because at first I was doing so well and hardly missing sugars at all. Completely gave up sodas, which I thougth that would be the hardest thing to give up but it turned out the easiest.
The last few weeks, since the weather changed, i've been fiending for carbs. Seriously, get out of bed at 2 am and drive to the gas station to buy donuts (I dont' even LIKE donuts) kind of fiending. I know that the weather change does effect me pretty strongly and I get very depressed during the winter. Maybe the sugar cravings have more to do with how I handled the seasonal depression in the past and I'm just needing to break the 'habit' of carbing up for the winter.

My mother is pretty much committing a slow suicide with her unnamaged diabetes, and I see how much she has changed in just a few years because of diabetes and liver disease. It is a strong motivator for me. I told the dietician that I wasn't going to be diabetic for long, so she shouldn't get used to seeing me. She laughed, so I think she thought I was kidding.

I do need to keep in mind that 3 months isn't very long at all, compared to a lifetime of bad habits and not really paying any attention at all in how many carbs were in the things that I eat.

Mostly, I was just shocked. Seriously shocked by the realization that sugar really is everywhere. It is ridiculous how pervasive it is. Even if you don't eat candy and junk, it finds itself into just about everything else.

Ya, me too, only I want potatoes, not donuts. I just upped my Vitamin D to 2,000 IU and will let you know if that helps.

Another change is that I eat a lot of raw kale salad in the summer and I've stopped b/c I don't like salads when it's cold. I wonder if all that fiber was helping to reduce sugar cravings.

Winsome, the homeopathic remedy, Saccharum officinale (made from the fresh juice of sugar cane), has been known to be very helpful for sugar cravings, among other things. The essence of this remedy is a lack of self love, abandonment issues and feeling forsaken, often instigated by unmet love, affection and attention needs from the mother.

Should any of this ring a bell, perhaps consider a chat with a good, well-trained, experienced Homeopath.

Winsome,

I have another suggestion, more a further clarification (I believe) of advice some of the other respondents have offered: Shop on the outside aisles of the grocery store. The whole foods found on those outside aisles are your best choices for better eating. I focus on fresh, lean meats, wild-caught seafood - primarily wild-caught tuna, Pacific salmon and cod - and lots of vegetables. I avoid fruits and eschew grains, entirely; although that is what works for me. Fruits and grains may be perfectly healthy for you to consume. If you can, I recommend that you get a nutritionist to advise you, based on your medical needs and personal preferences.

Avoid ALL pre-packaged foods. Period. Yes, as stated, you lose the convenience of an easily-prepared meal. However, you gain the full knowledge of exactly what you are consuming.

Most of all, don't punish yourself over an occasional backslide. It's perfectly natural and all part of the process.

Best luck on your path to better health!

QueenRah

Tips for curing sugar cravings?
How do you manage your blood sugar levels?
etc.

WinD

I'm insulin resistant vs diabetic....but basically eat the same way.

First, I've found that sticking to fairly low carb diet kills the urge to have sugar for me. But, when they do pop up, I've found that high vinegar foods (pickles, mustard, etc) kills the craving.

I've found that it's just best to avoid processed foods. I tend to eat meat, eggs, dairy, nuts and green veggies..the only place I cave is low carb tortillas. If I do fruit it's usually berries.

Great advice on the dark chocolate and the Greek yogurt.

I had gestational diabetes and now am borderline Type II. Lost 30 pounds on a low carb diet and my blood sugar levels are now back to normal (blood pressure lower too).

To feel more in control of what carbs I did ingest throughout the day, I use fatsecret.com, but there are plenty of others that help you track your intake.

I'll second what others have said about not worrying about a little sweet dessert if you're within daily carb limits = that's why you keep track. I enjoy a measured portion of diet ice cream or diet pudding and that's helped the craving. I still have major cravings sometimes right after lunch and combat that by making a mug of diet hot chocolate (filling and tastes sweet, but just a few carbs). Also, Blue Diamond makes roasted almonds that are dusted with dark chocolate - delicious.

Dad had diabetes and the doctor is keeping an eye on me. I seldom eat sweets but I love my tortillas and potatoes. So far my levels are normal and I will nibble on dark chocoate when I have it in the house. I drink juice (Tampico), diet ginsing tea and water. Diet MD is a treat.

I know I should lose more weight but I am at a plateau...I HATE IT!!!

There are some great breads here. You can order online if you can't find them locally.

Also look into the Dukan diet.

http://www.dukandiet.com/

It really killed my cravings for sugar/carbs. I have gradually added back in fruit, but go back to this diet when I'm feeling the cravings and bad habits come back.

I've made sugar free cheesecake with a ground almond crust that takes care of special events and odd cravings.

Find a functional medicine doctor. Sounds more like you're insulin insuficient than some exotic flavor of diabetic.if your body isn't using sugar correctly you will peak & crash for no obvious reason & crave sugar/starches because your insulin is saying hit me with sugar but not that one or that one or that one...which leads to craving "sloppy sugars" even though level says you're fine.
Also getting checked for candida would be a good idea. Systemic yeast infection that's fed by sugars may be causing the cravings

theRose4U.. if you read the OP, you'd know that the OP has medically diagnosed, medication induced diabetes from corticosteroid use. This is not a "made up" kind of diabetes. Unless you are a medical professional, don't make unsubstantiated claims.

Winsome - some people have made some great suggestions and you're doing awesome! I'm really proud of you taking proactive steps in regards to your health.. knowing what your mother is going through you know exactly what you are helping prevent.

Wow! I was surprised at how many new replies there are.

I appreciate all of the advice and tips. Working my way through processing all of them. It would help if my memory was better :)

theRose4U, I don't think steroid induced diabetes is some exotic flavor of diabetes - it is just a medical diagnosis of what triggered the disease- I'd be happy to not be diabetic, but calling it by another name isn't going to change how I have to manage my diet. At least, I don't think it will.

I do have a functional medical doctor, a few specialists and a nutrionist. Thanks for the tip about candida, but I went through a thorough blood workup (and specific tests for bacteria) very recently. I wasn't aware of yeast infections causing those symptoms, and appreciate the knowledge. It is good to know what to look for and be aware of :)

For the cravings caused by Seasonal Affectiveness Disorder, try 5,000 IU of Vitamin D III. It will lift the S.A.D. inside of two weeks. And without the S.A.D., you shouldn't be craving comfort foods.

The Man's lost about 35 pounds and lowered his A1C in the last 3 years from 8.8 to 6.8 but the doctor still won't reduce the amount of Metformin. Alas, the weight loss has stopped because of an addiction to peanut M & M's as far as I can tell. And carbs, at home he eats whole weight and sweet potatoes and moderate portions. The big thing is going out; stuffings made with white bread, white potatoes mashed with heavy amounts of butter, and too many calories.

Now I can relax just a little now, but I must keep up the fight!

Food does have it natural taste mushrooms, all my gosh the taste in an egg is wonderful!

Sugar is everywhere ?????? As someone not a doctor, not a nurse, etc yet as someone who cared for a diabetic I DISAGREE. My client was a type 2 diabetic. In the first 3 months of caring for him, we eliminated about 1/2 of him shots/meds BY DIET ALONE...and he did NOT starve. It took preparing almost every meal from scratch. There were no canned soups, veggies, etc. Hell we even worked in goodies like strawberry shortcake and similar REGULAR (not "sugar free") desserts.

You are right about the sugar alcohols in "sugar free" products....Worse than sugar ! we found.

Stay away from anything prepared by ANYONE ELSE. Be in charge of your diet and congrats....keep losing weight.
