Sugar is everywhere ?????? As someone not a doctor, not a nurse, etc yet as someone who cared for a diabetic I DISAGREE. My client was a type 2 diabetic. In the first 3 months of caring for him, we eliminated about 1/2 of him shots/meds BY DIET ALONE...and he did NOT starve. It took preparing almost every meal from scratch. There were no canned soups, veggies, etc. Hell we even worked in goodies like strawberry shortcake and similar REGULAR (not "sugar free") desserts.

You are right about the sugar alcohols in "sugar free" products....Worse than sugar ! we found.

Stay away from anything prepared by ANYONE ELSE. Be in charge of your diet and congrats....keep losing weight.

This is excellent advice, and far and away the fastest and easiest way to eliminate sugar and sugar alcohols from your diet, but sadly, even if you've got the time to cook every meal from scratch, a lot of people just can't afford to completely cut out eating all of the processed food.

I am a type 2 diabetic.
Until my first visit to the US in 2002, the Brit doctors advocated to completely cut out all sugar and sugary foods (including natural sugars) and I lived my life on bland, tasteless cardboard-tasting stuff and pills. It was awful and quite frankly, very boring.

When I was in the US, I was lucky enough to be staying with someone who wasn't short of a $ or two, so I had the benefit of being able to consult a diabetic specialist who was a friend of the family.
The advice I was given by the specialist was NOT to completely cut out sugar!
That surprised me a lot. But when it was all explained, it sort-of made sense.
The body needs sugar and sugar compounds to turn that into food for various other parts of the body.
Cutting sugar out completely could possibly damage those body parts.

Her advice was to cut down on sugary foods and most pre-prepared foods but not cut them out completely.
Try to make as much of your diet from scratch so you can control what goes into it.
I have followed that advice for a decade now and I don't need any pills for my diabetes (and haven't need them for most of that period) - my blood sugar levels are now almost 'normal' for the most part.
I can now eat pretty much whatever I fancy, within reason and in moderation.

We make most of our food from scratch using natural ingredients and it is (in most cases) actually cheaper to make it than to buy it and it has a far superior flavour. The only down side is actually making it and the time needed to prepare the meals compared to just whipping it out of the freezer or opening tins and packets. Even simple things like Yorkshire puds or pancakes, cakes etc - we make our own with eggs & flour etc - none of that pre-cooked packet stuff or 'add-water-and-shake' mixtures.

Preparing your own food is probably the singularly most constructive bit of advice that anyone with diabetes can follow.
Buy a cook book or get sensible recipes from the internet.
Experiment, alter recipes that have things in you don't like - it's fun! And it doesn't have to be expensive.
Everything home-made in our house doesn't last 5 minutes! lol.

Edit to add: The specialist also said to utterly AVOID anything marketted as 'diabetic' food or drink.

I would try Atkins if I were you. I did before becoming pregnant and my problems with blood sugar crashing ended. Atkins is not safe for pregnancy so I had to go off but my symptoms of blood sugar crashing are still gone.

Here is one website that has a lot of recipes for low carb. I never felt like I was missing out while the rest of my family ate a regular diet. I used shredded Zucchini for pasta. There is even a recipe using eggs to use as bread.

http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=39

I used this for bread. It was great when I craved a sandwich.

The 'Atkins' diet was discredited over here as being dangerous on many counts.

Always seek the advice of medical physician before embarking on any type of diet plan.

I wouldn't. High-protein diets put increased strain on the kidneys and diabetics are not only predisposed to some kidney diseases but it can also cause ketosis and risk damaging the heart.

Yes, but that'll be because that crap is always full of sorbitol.

That depends entirely on how low you go and how high you go with other things.

Processed food has a huge markup. I take my brother food shopping and he easily spends double what I do on groceries.

(Additional factors that add to both of our costs: he also gets some prepared foods; I avoid the Dirty Dozen (the produce with the most pesticides) and buy meat and dairy that does not have antibiotics/hormones/etc.

Based on my press operator's experience the best thing he ever did for himself is take a class at the local hospital on managing his condition. He learned so much valuable information about diabetes. How food metabolizes in the body, and about hidden sugars.

Some vegetables, like peas, carrots, corn, should be eaten in limited quantities.

As others have said, eliminate the whites.

And the biggest help for him........he walks, briskly, one hour every single morning no matter what the weather is doing.

That is in addition to his bicycling over 2,000 miles a year and golfing without a cart 30-40 times a year.

One of Michael Pollan's Food Rules is to avoid foods with health claims:

Rules Worth Following, for Everyone's Sake

...In his last book, Mr. Pollan summarized his approach in just seven words: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” The new book provides the practical steps, starting with advice to avoid “processed concoctions,” no matter what the label may claim (“no trans fats,” “low cholesterol,” “less sugar,” “reduced sodium,” “high in antioxidants” and so forth).

As Mr. Pollan puts it, “If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t.”

Do you already avoid products made with high-fructose corn syrup? Good, but keep in mind, sugar is sugar, and if it is being added to a food that is not normally sweetened, avoid it as well. Note, too, that refined flour is hardly different from sugar once it gets into the body.

Also avoid foods advertised on television, imitation foods and food products that make health claims. No natural food is simply a collection of nutrients, and a processed food stripped of its natural goodness to which nutrients are then added is no bargain for your body.

Those who sell the most healthful foods — vegetables, fruits and whole grains — rarely have a budget to support national advertising. If you shop in a supermarket (and Mr. Pollan suggests that wherever possible, you buy fresh food at farmers’ markets), shop the periphery of the store and avoid the center aisles laden with processed foods. Note, however, that now even the dairy case has been invaded by products like gunked-up yogurts.

Yes, but that'll be because that crap is always full of sorbitol.

Yep.
And that other artificial sweetener called Aspartame - absolutely rife in diabetic drinks.
Then there's the usual saccarin

Most of them leave a nasty after-taste.

Use natural sugars or honey for a sweetener.

I still use sugar when I want some in my drinks or to cook with - can't stand most of the artificial crap.
But I rarely drink soft drinks & alcohol and I usually avoid most choccy things and sweets (candy).

I had to laugh when there was a snippet in one of our red-top tabloids about an obese woman wanting to lose weight. She cut out most of the good food (because she was told to cut down on her calorie intake) but her fridge was full of soft drinks and chocolate bars 'to fill in the gaps when she felt hungry'.
Because it was 'diet' type stuff she honestly thought it didn't contain any calories at all.
She wondered why she was putting on weight instead of losing it. lolol.

Ya gotta laff at stuff like that.

It's actually really sad to me.

With our education system, we still cannot teach people the basics of good health.

Aspartame isn't limited to diabetic drinks, it's in most diet pop, and some people actually like the synthetic aspiriny after taste.

Sorbitol (which is more solid stuff than drinks: diabetic chocolate is always full of it) has a more frightening weapon in its arsenal than a funny taste, though. It's notorious for giving some people the shits or bunging them up...

I like that!!
So very true.

Can I nick it??

What you also have to bear in mind is how you cook stuff too.
If you can, steam it. Don't boil all the nutrients out in a gallon of water.
Don't deep-fry stuff if there is another way to cook it. I can't remember the last time we used our deep fat fryer.
Don't fry at all if you can help it. Grill it or use the oven or one of those George Foreman type griddles.
Try to avoid all those yummy (and fattening) sauces unless you make it yourself.

I'm no health freak and I'm still overweight - but not like I used to be.
Some of my other disabilities make it difficult to exercise like I should.
But, by making some changes to my diet and taking care to prepare virtually all of my food properly instead of buying pre-processed crap has made a huge difference to my diabetes.

Sugar is an addictive drug. If you think I'm wrong - go cold turkey and you'll quickly see. The "sweet tooth" you get is actually withdrawal and in a day or two you'll kill for something sweet.

But after three or four days of no refined carbohydrate - you're free - just be careful to avoid it in the future.

It's just like heroin folks. To get off the stuff you have to go cold turkey and go through withdrawal.

Our bodies are not equipped by evolution to handle refined carbs - the cave men didn't have it for millions of years so our systems can't handle it. It's metabolic poison, like putting terpentine in your car.

I steam broccoli in a tiny bit of water - and then drink the water.

my ex was diagnosed with type I diabetes in high school. He uses an insulin pump and counts carbs. He opts for "good carbs" when ever possible. He also downloaded an app for his phone where you can look up just about everything known to man (including restaurant foods) to get the carb breakdown.

Incidentally, if you decide to do anything Atkins related and you are taking insulin....work very closely with your doctor. The reason you lose so much weight especially in the early phases is because your body is in ketosis. Look up ketosis and ketoacidosis on Google. Our bodies are NOT designed to stay in ketosis.

Is the carb counting doing him any good?
I tried that (the specialist nurses at the diabetes clinic have got hold of a new script telling them that's the only possible solution to improve diabetes control, apparently) and all it did was put my blood sugars through the roof. I gave up on it after losing a couple of stone. I'd much rather have frequent hypos than permanent ketosis...
