kalikshama -> Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (7/26/2012 3:01:51 PM)

Are hotel guests more interested in reading "50 Shades of Grey" than the Bible?

One British hotelier thinks so. And that's why, even though he says he's never read E L James' best-selling novel himself, Jonathan Denby has decided to remove all the Gideon Bibles from his hotel's 40 rooms and replace them with the book that's been dubbed "mommy porn."

He made the switch earlier this month at the Damson Dene Hotel in the Lake District of England.

Denby writes on his blog, Slow Life: "Tonight millions of women will be curling up in bed with a good book and you can bet your life it won't be the Bible. More likely than not it will be 'Fifty Shades of Grey.' I haven't read the book yet -- I'm not in the target audience -- but I'm told it's a ripping good yarn and everyone who's in the target audience loves it. This made me wonder about the sense of providing a book, the Gideon Bible which no-one reads, and many dislike, in the bedside cabinet of our hotel bedrooms, instead of a book which everyone wants to read, such as 'Fifty Shades of Grey.'

"In this secular age it seems distinctly odd that anyone would expect to find a religious book in a hotel bedroom."

Our local library service has a rather large demand for the volume I hear....

50 Shades of Grey is bad for literature, society, and humanity.

Any fans of it should be ashamed.

divi -> RE: Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (7/27/2012 5:05:00 AM)

Uh huh lol. Sure more in demand then the bible lol

littlewonder -> RE: Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (7/27/2012 1:24:18 PM)

I saw this the other day and thought about how so wrong this is on all levels. Why not put a playboy in the room too?

Why? It's bad and glorifies an abusive relationship. What they have isn't a Dom/sub relationship but an unhealthy codependency. Everything but the sex scenes are fluff. God forbid some young naive girl confuses behavior like that for love. *vent*

littlewonder -> RE: Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (7/29/2012 8:14:44 PM)

I'm not all that concerned though. The book sales are already dropping and like any book, people will forget all about it in a couple of months and the hotel guy will be putting the bibles back in or nothing at all or those in the rooms will look at it and if they even see it if he has it in the top night drawer like most hotels. How many people actually open those drawers? LOL I know I rarely do.

PiratesAhoy -> RE: Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (7/29/2012 11:07:07 PM)

My mom told me about this a few days ago, and she's basically only against it because "God doesn't agree with such sexual promiscuity".

Personally I have very little idea of what it's about, and I don't really care to find out. I mean, the origin of this story was meant to be based around Twilight until she created it into a Original Fic. To me, that's not a very credible beginning at all. Ever.

I think explains rather well how a dom feels (and how someone feels who isn't sub but is with a dom). That scenario happens all the time and it's difficult for people - you fall in love with someone just right except sexually they aren't and then you compromise. There is no abuse. The girl can leave at any time and he restrains himself. It certainly isn't well written and nor did it arouse me but as an explanation of a lot of D/s concepts I think it's pretty goodf and today we hear itis outselling even Harry Potter.

We need more succesful women writers and particularly those in their late 40s - good for her. It's more than most of us achieve.

As for the hotels - he's got himself loads of publicity, clever him.

Delilya -> RE: Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (8/2/2012 12:26:33 PM)

I am not a religious person, so I don't understand why they have to be mutually exclusive. Why not have both? And is he prepared for the copies to be taken when the guest leaves? Or can it be read in one night?

LanaDeVille -> RE: Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (8/3/2012 3:25:57 AM)

Why not none? Then people's feathers won't get ruffled at all, and no one will feel like the hotel is pushing stuff on them.

BlackTigerDragon -> RE: Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (9/4/2012 4:16:06 AM)

I don't want to live on this planet any more.

sisymaidvictoria -> RE: Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (9/9/2012 8:37:27 AM)

So they supply a fictional book about an abusive, codependant Dom/sub relationship and then pulled that out and replaced it with 50 Shades of Grey?

Baroana -> RE: Hotel Replaces Bible With '50 Shades of Grey' (9/9/2012 8:42:03 AM)

LOL!
