There is good and bad with unions. There's good and bad without. I think unions got a little bit too powerful and now the pendulum is swinging back the other way. At some point, if things get bad again, union membership will start growing.

Shush. You're not allowed to bring reason into this.

It's supposed to be black/white, not fifty shades of gray, right?

Also check the strong resemblence between the last 5 letters of 'communist' and the word 'union'.

Latin: what is it?
Ask your parents where words come from...

My parents are both dead...smartass!

Btw...I've been on withdrawal from the Teamsters(probably the most corrupt organization outside the US Government)since 1971.

Another thing...there's NO resemblance between you and a teabagger(political definition).

You obviously don't know what a "right to work" state is.

The rock bottom thing that I've never quite grasped is why, in any country that seems so fond of the free market, it's so widely accepted that the employers' side should have the freedom to exploit the laws of supply and demand to decide the wages that they want to give, but the workers should *not* have the freedom to exploit the very same laws of supply and demand to push for the wages that they want to receive. What is it about employers that makes them better judges of their workers' best interests than those workers themselves? Just by virtue of being employers, are employers more likely to be more altruistic people than workers? Because if they are, then there's something badly wrong with one of the most fundamental principles of the free market: that people are driven by self-interest.

As a bit of an aside, does the phrase 'free collective bargaining' mean anything to American readers here? That, for instance, it has bugger all to do with a worker being a 'commie' that he wants to join a union. Quite the opposite: he wants to join with the free market and exert his free-market muscle by combining with other members of his workforce.

I think unions served a very important purpose historically. It is not clear to me the extent to which they are useful now - meaning, I literally don't know how different the employment landscape would be if they didn't exist - not suggesting they shouldn't exist. I feel we have such a small unionized work force today that its impact is simply not what it used to be.

I will say this. It annoys me when people who benefit or benefited from union wages support conservative politics that are anti-union. A sort of "well, it helped me, but I don't want anyone else benefitting from this" kind of mentality. What is up with that?

For example, there should be hardly anyone in Hollywood who is conservative - almost all of the major professions in film belong to unions. Prominent Hollywood Republicans include the following: Arnold Schwatrznegger, Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Drew Carrey, Freddie Prinze jr. , Bo Derek, Charlton Heston, Chuck Norris , Clint Eastwood, Heather Locklear, Jean Claude van Damme, Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Bush, Matt LeBlanc, LL Cool J, Patricia Heaton, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shannon Doherty, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Selleck, and Tom Clancy (this is off of the Internet, and I hope accurate). But my point is, wtf - actors are part of a union, and they get paid union wages. Why are these actors Republican (a party that has been historically anti-union)??

Here's the thing: You're so brainwashed by the union that you won't even admit that $56,000 a year (probably between $70k - $75k after benefits and overtime) to drive a truck and push a button is ridiculous.

Instead you're here trying to justify a job that requires no education and a skill set that almost everyone with a drivers license possesses, deserves that kind of income. Especially considering the other public services that are being cut due to lack of funding.

I have not tried to justify anything.
You might want to go to google and search the historical relationship between the wages of teamsters and school teachers.

You might want to Google.....San Diego Garbage men don't belong to the Teamsters.

I belonged to a union too, I didnt want to belong to a union but I had no choice in the matter if I wanted the job.. Imo, its the same thing with these actors.. just cuz they belong to the union doesnt mean they actually want to be, but if these big name actors want to be offered the $20/mil per movie work then they dont seem to have much choice.. working on indie movies only goes so far..

I also dont think just cuz you are in a certain profession that it is supposed to dictate your political bent.. so i am not quite sure why you think hardly anyone in Hollywood should be conservative..

They may be part of the union but they are hardly getting union wages (they get far better pay than union wages), FTP. They don't owe anything to the union that they belong to. Why would you think that they would?

Unlike you, who can see through their lies, the average working man is just too stupid to know whose cock is up his ass, is that what you are saying?

So if you pick the right city, doing that job would be great, especially for that kinda money..

How much do you think a trash truck driver should make?

imo, that would depend on the city/county/town he/she lived in and how expensive or inexpensive the cost of living was there.. what do you think they should make??

I think they should make as much as they possibly can.
I find it most instructive that you complain about how much a teamster makes but have no comment on how much bill gates makes.

nope, I dont see the point in wasting my time sharing that.. people are either pro-union or anti-union and no one is gonna change anyone else's mind on that..

Seeing the inner workings of two unions made me realize they are no different than our government.

Feeding the masses a line of bullshit, trying to get them to see their value and how necessary they are..........all while living fat on the dues.

Do not the members of a union have a say in how much the administrators of a union are paid? Is it not the duty of every member of a union to point out fraud and graft when they see it? What did you do when you saw fraud and graft?

quote:

And.........making it nearly impossible to get rid of the rotten apples.

By bad apples I am assuming that you are talking about those who have not mastered their craft but expect to be paid as if they had. It has been my exact opposite experience. If the super on a job finds a union laborer or tradsman to be incompetant they get show up pay(1/2 day wages straight time)and get sent back to the hall and the dispatcher gets told why. The dispatcher will send a more skilled worker and the offender will catch a great deal of grief up to and including expulsion from the union.

A guess seems to indicate that you do not know.
The answer is:
The trade unions have an apprenticeship program and that is how most tradesmen acquire their knowledge.
