Steven, its true that we've lost alot of the labor movement over the last 30 years or so, thanks to Reagan allowing the offshoring of industrial and manufacturing jobs after firing the air traffic controllers. Add that to the fact that this may actually be the first administration in that time to enforce the Wagner Act, and you've got what you have today, a society with insane income inequality, massive amounts of poverty, as well as failing health, education, and infrastructure systems. Unions used to be the most progressive force in the country, which is why conservatives want to destroy them completely.

The World Bank agrees: Unions are good for a country's economy

quote:

At the macroeconomic level, high unionization rates lead to lower inequality of earnings and can improve economic performance (in the form of lower unemployment and inflation, higher productivity and speedier adjustment to shocks).

Basically, if we want to get the hell out of this stagnat economy, we need to organize.

At one time unions were needed because the coal, railroad and robber barons ran everything and had no regard for people. Now the UNIONS are the robber barons. With their unrealistic wage, benefit and work condition demands and have no regard for the people. Senior bus drivers in Philadelphia getting 6 figure incomes along with senior garbage men in New York. Public sector unions with their generous wage, benefit and pension plans that are bankrupting cities all over the US! These are the middle class, poor and elderly, on fixed incomes with their "normal" small private sector pensions. Their Home taxes will have to be raised astronomically to pay the union members generous benefits. Many will probably have to sell the home they worked all their life for. Union motto should be: I got mine, fuck you!

Ummm... What? Do you have any sources, or are you just making crap up as you go along like most right-wing union bashers? My guess is that it's the latter.

What has happened since the unions came that has changed the way mananagement deals with labor? In those non union occupations do the workers make what union workers make? If not then why not?

Which people are you referencing?
Which wage do you object to?
Which benifit do you object to?
Which work condition demands do you object to?

quote:

Senior bus drivers in Philadelphia getting 6 figure incomes along with senior garbage men in New York.

Do these senior labor make more than senior management?

quote:

Public sector unions with their generous wage, benefit and pension plans that are bankrupting cities all over the US!

Are you seriously saying that union wages and pensions have single handedly caused a world wide depression?
If so that would be the most moronic post you will have made to date.

quote:

But these self same taxes willl not be raised to pay for management's generous benefits?

quote:

Many will probably have to sell the home they worked all their life for. Union motto should be: I got mine, fuck you!

No...their motto is I got mine by being union, you can get yours by being union also.

Are Amazon employees unionized?

...Ambulances in parking lot

Amazon has quickly become one of the Lehigh Valley's top 25 employers, with 1,381 local workers as of September. Hundreds more are employed at the Breinigsville warehouse through the temporary staffing firm Integrity Staffing Solutions. Amazon has declined to tell The Morning Call how many temporary workers are employed in the warehouse, where staffing increases during the holiday shopping season.

Signs of problems at the warehouse surfaced in May 2011 when Cetronia Ambulance Corps made several trips to the facility to treat workers suffering from the heat. Amazon subsequently paid to have ambulances stationed in its parking lot on hot days in case workers suffered heat stress.

In June of that year, OSHA started receiving complaints about working conditions in the warehouse. One employee complained that 15 workers collapsed on the job when the warehouse heat index exceeded 100 degrees, according to OSHA records. An emergency room doctor who treated warehouse workers suffering from the heat called federal regulators to report an "unsafe environment," OSHA records state. OSHA opened an inspection of the warehouse that month.

And that right there is why we need to return to having a strong labor movement. If Amazon was unionized, those conditions would be completely unacceptable.

My grandfather was a Union Steward. He told in me in the 1980's that they had outlived their usefulness.

In the event of a strike, the union members lost their cars, homes and families. The head of the Union still made 6 figures a year. The Union rep convinced the workers to hold out and 18 months later, they ended up settling for less than the original offer.

It makes it damned hard to get rid of a crappy employee. None of the work on my home will be done by Union workers, simply because I don't want the guy who should be fired, but can't be fired working on my home.

I guess I'm silly to think that a guy that drives a garbage truck shouldn't be paid $27 an hour plus free or nearly free benefits.

Did your grandfather tell you what cataclysmic change in the mind set of management happened that caused the union to "outlive their usefulness"?

Cite please.

Why do you feel that a union employee cannot be fired or taken off of the job?

How much do you think a garbage truck driver should be paid?

You think $52,000 a year plus health insurance to drive a garbage truck is too much money?

Would you drive a garbage truck for $52,000 a year plus health insurance?

Well, that was the 80's, before average CEO to worker pay was 400-1. Also, Ive never heard of a local president with a 6 figure salary. I know mine only makes about $60,000 a year to do what he does. Nice try with the lie machine though.

Was your math teacher in a union? $27/hour is $56,160/year, not $52,000

And you don't see that today in China,India, just about all Asian markets where over 100 people a week kill themselves, where factories and dorms have to have netting to catch people who jump out.. The right of the worker does not exist..

it was the same here less than 70 years ago, the Pullman strikes, the riots...unions came into power because of the abuse caused upon workers by their employers
