For me, what mostly confuses me is all the english words... things like "total", "obey", "dominate". I'm an engineer caught in a poet's world. I deal in literals and precision. The preponderance here deal in fantasy, hyperbole, and deliberate ambiguity to preserve the fantasy. So when I read something like, "I need a disciplinarian to help me with procrastination issues" I foolishly think they are looking for a kinky life coach not a scene using procrastination as an excuse. When I read, "I trust my master completely" I think they trust their master completely not "I think he's an OK guy within limits". The list is endless.

Ask me if Carol is my "TPE" slave and I'll give you a Heinlein-esque answer... "She has not disobeyed so far. It is total to-date."

I also think my comp sci background doesn't help any. As a programmer you always deal in boundary conditions. So when someone says something like, "I can't leave" my head automatically goes to extreme examples... what if your master <insert horrific thing here>?

I have to work really hard to make the interpretations when I speak with most BDSM people.

This. These things always leave me baffled as well. When I say total and complete that's exactly what I mean. I don't mean I trust him until he does something I don't like. It doesn't mean I take it all back when he crosses a limit.

So I guess I'm a pretty literal, black and white person. I don't like words being used in bdsm that people twist to meet their desires. It ends up leaving me confused and feeling once again as if I just don't get it.

My synagogue has a name which has the acronym CBT. So far I've always kept a straight face.

The only one that I can think of off of the top of My head is tl;dr (too long didn't read). I just attribute that to internet jargon.

Kink stuff, I didn't have a problem with so much. One of the first recommendations I ever got was to buy a copy of "The Loving Dominant" and read it, including that nice list of definitions in the back. If more people would invest in actually doing some research regarding an environment that they would like to enjoy, less confusion would happen.

To Ishtarr, My understanding is that housework relates to either one's own home, home of a loved one, or any situation where an actual connection exists. No strings housework is where one person does housework for another, without any obligation or trade implied. You come, you clean, you leave, and that's all she wrote.

My favorite use in wrong wording was right there in person was being "hung" when your computer would freeze up. Back then I was married to a software writter who also would use this wording.

I was working with software engineers, I went over to my supervisors office and right out asked him are you "hung"?
His reply was I don't think that has anything to do with work! I still crack up over that one.

I had the impression the difference between Housework and No Strings Housework was that one was just house work. As in, sure, I do housework, but it's just chores. Nothing more to it.

Turns out, that ain't it at all.

What IS exactly the difference between just "housework" and "no strings housework"? I've never really understood that one.

This one is a difficult distinction to make when you just don't care.

Apparently, I may still have it wrong, "Housework" is where the one party might say to the other, "It isn't any fun if you don't make me wear heels and a frilly apron!"

In contrast, "No Strings Housework" is where the active party derives satisfaction from being of service to the not necessarily present and certainly not supervising other party.

The way I look at it, I don't mind doing a little work now and then if that is what it takes to maintain a reasonably nice place to hang out in. No kink to it. It's neither one nor the other. It's just normal.

Thank you LadyPact for defining no strings housework. Now I'm absolutely sure that's not something I'm interested in. I remember when I filled out my first bdsm playlist there were many blanks because I had no clue what a lot of it was. I spent hours going over it line by line with an experienced dom asking questions and learning. He loved to teach so I also learned many useful safety tips that day also.

Many years ago I think I was one of the last to know what a "pearl necklace" was. Back then I was embarrassed to admit I didn't know something. So for months I just smiled and laughed at jokes I didn't understand. When I was asked once if I liked a pearl necklace I replied they are ok but I prefer diamonds. That's when I learned what it meant; after he quit laughing.

I'm still laughing about seasnail asking boss if he was hung.

The first time I saw NSA in a personal ad I thought of a secure building near where I once lived/worked. When I first came online and learned the dark definition of 'scat' I was grossed out. I loved Scatman Crothers as a kid.

Thank you LadyPact for defining no strings housework.
You are quite welcome. I hope the definition that I have provided is, at minimum, accurate enough, even though I didn't go into all of the various nuances.

Between your name and photo, I couldn't avoid supposing something like that.

I would not have been surprised if you had claimed much more.

Hat tip.

That sounds really good advice, thank you :-)

I had a similar confusion over the term beading, apparently it's not just jewellery making! x

LMAO I think I knew instinctively what a 'pearl necklace' was and never quite fell for the trap.
But I do remember being very naive from a young age. In the 6th grade a kid asked me "Hey, do you spit or swallow?" I was very tomboyish back then, and I said, "I don't know? Spit?" Because I'd had many spitting contests with my brothers and friends. He got a big laugh out of that. I didn't learn what that meant until about 10th grade. (The same thing happened when someone called a friend of mine 'fruity'. We decided it meant she must smell like fruit.)

Another time I was walking home in Anaheim, CA and this guy pulls up in a van and asks if I want some lines. Smartass me, I smile sweetly and say, "What kinda lines you got? I've heard 'em all! 'Do I have a quarter you can borrow? Cause you told your mom you'd call her when you met the woman of your dreams?' Or how about 'Are your feet tired? Cause you've been running through my brain all day?'" So after I got a very blank stare... the annoyed van-driving lunatic screams out "NO! LINES OF COKE!" I hauled ass yelling "STRANGER DANGER!" Still recovering from that one.

Kink has been a learning experience for sure. ANYTHING NSA was confusing at first. No strings means: No Strings.

I also didn't know what watersports were or TPE. I thought at first TPE had to do with bathrooms... Toilet Paper Etiquette. Hahaha.

And a Masochist was someone who liked to chew their food and show it. "Masticate" anyone?

I'm sure there's more but my brain is tired. If I think of any, I'll post again. :)

When I first saw the abbreviations "D/s" and "M/s," I figured out "D/s" was Dominance/submission, but I thought for a while that "M/s" was masochism/sadism instead of Master/slave. That led to quite a few things making not too much sense in context.

I thought BDSM covered a few things...

B/D for Bondange/Discipline
D/s for Domination/submission
S/M for slave/Master -and/or- Sadism/Masochism

Am I wrong in assuming this? Or is this how it evolved? Was it originally Bondange*Discipline*Sadism*Masochism? That's be a good thing to know. :D

A history lesson.

The term BDSM is basically an invention of the internet. Originally, it meant the various kinds of "play" That's the bondage, discipline, sadism, and masochist part. When the old UseNet forums were about, it's how a lot of people found each other or just played out their fantasies online.

Basically, those who didn't "play" but were into the authority dynamic thing instead threw in that bit about Dominance and submission. It kind of morphed from there. Even Wikipedia has the incorrect definition listed and there are some kinky folks who are attempting to get it put back right.

People do still argue about it even now, twenty years later. To date, I haven't heard a good excuse as to why any acronym would have any single letter stand for multiple words. I'd love for anybody to show Me an example other than BDSM for this, where four letters begets six separate, distinct inclusions.

You can read about this with a bit more detail in both "The Loving Dominant" by John Warren and "SM101" by Jay Wiseman. The third edition of both books has this information.

When I first heard HWP I spent at least 15 minutes trying to figure out the acronym-Haitian woman professional, Hot White Princess, I had no clue...
