My bone doctor always felt that supplements were hokum, like drinking gelatine for better nails. I figure, whatever works for you is what works, and there's no harm in testing things.

I have never tried an elliptical, how are they for triggering asthma attacks? (stairs = wheezy)

Myfitnesspal has helped me lose 22 pounds since this post April 8. More on knees and the exercise component when I get back from the gym [:D]

http://www.collarchat.com/m_4084577/mpage_1/key_myfitnesspal/tm.htm#4084577

Yesterday, when bemoaning how my knee pain makes exercise difficult, my sister suggested My Fitness Pal. I've never lost weight by diet alone, but for her this component has always been her main focus. She's previously been successful using Weight Watchers to lose pregnancy weight gain, but is now using My Fitness Pal, which she says is easier than WW and is also free.

I've just come back from a visit to the doctor and he says that, judging by preliminary results from the x-rays, that it's osteoarthritis (which I have in my hands).

20+ years ago I had some serious trauma to both knees after I was hit by a car when out on my bicycle. I landed knees first onto a concrete and gravel path and skidded about 6 feet on my knees before my head (safely in crash helmet) made contact with a wall, which stopped me. I was wearing jeans, which were shredded, along with the skin on my legs from knee to toes. Although there was no obvious damage, the doctors at the ER bandaged me up, gave me crutches and I used them for about 3 weeks.

Ever since then I've not been able to kneel properly due to pain, and used to get occasional bouts of stiff, sore knees which usually lasted about a week. But this time the attack has lasted nearly 3 months and is getting worse. I know that I've put on a LOT of weight, which is affecting my knees, hence my need to lose weight and get fit.

My doc wants to do more investigations and is considering an arthroscopic (sp?) investigation of my knee, including cleaning out any debris. He's also going to refer me to a physiotherapist for advice on safe exercising.

But being the impatient person that I am, I want to start sooner rather than later. I've recieved some amazing advice here, and I will be checking out every suggestion - thank you SOOO much!

Mind you, I couldn't resist a quick joke with the doc this morning. At the end of the consultation he asked if I had any more questions. I said "so will I be able to dance ballet en pointe after this treatment?". He looked a little baffled at me, a podgy 47 year old woman, and said "I don't see why not, as long as you're very careful". To which I replied "brilliant! Cos I couldn't do it before..."

Luckily his sense of humour was similar to mine [:D]

Swimming, weirdly enough, is the one thing I've done this summer that caused me the most knee issues. Who knows what the fuck that was about.

I alternate strokes - crawl (freestyle), backstroke, breast stroke - and this spring the frog kick that goes with the breast stroke was aggravating my knees. So I started using fins and do the flutter kick with all three strokes. Yesterday, I swam a mile :)

Today, I did yoga for 90 minutes, but for whatever reason, simply have no endurance when it comes to the elliptical. When my knees aren't bothering me, I hop on it for two minutes in between each weight lifting set. If I already have a little pain, this will guarantee a lot more pain.

I saw quite a few medical personnel this spring for my knees and they all recommended swimming as the best exercise, followed by bike, then the elliptical. I hate the upright bikes at the gym but can do 5 miles on the recumbent bike.

Oh, and I can't go swimming. I have a real fear of the water (dating back to a sadistic swimming instructor in my early teens). Even the smell of chlorine makes me want to puke and I start shaking in fear.

I can't help but wonder how you'd do away from the teaching environment, say in the ocean or in a pond/lake.

Have you tried Glucosamine and Chondroitin? It's helped me a lot.

can I just buy this over the counter at a health food store?

Try ordering it on the web, usually cheaper and better quality (higher concentration)

Costco generally has a good deal on their house brand. If you don't have one in your area, you can order online. Shipping is reasonable. If you have an Albertsons, their Equaline brand often goes on sale 2 for 1.

Again, in Europe we don't have Costco, Walmart, RiteAid, Duanne Reader, Albertsons, Ralph's etc....

We got Tesco, Sainsbury, Waitrose, but their supplements stuff is quite basic... I like herbal tea remedies, preferably just the leaves, quite difficult to get here

Perhaps maybe over coming your fear of swimming would be helpful too, so then you could get in the water, or maybe go to a lake if you have safe lakes in your area, maybe a lake would be more nutrual.

Here are the knee strengthening exercises my PT recommended:

MariaB -> RE: dodgy knee and exercise (8/17/2012 9:15:02 AM)

I come from a long line of osteoarthritis people. My mums just had a hip replacement, my cousin was in a wheelchair in her mid 20s, my nan and two aunties had really bad knees and my sister had rheumatoid arthritis in her fingers but since going on a complete dairy free diet 3 years ago is now showing no signs of swollen joints.
Because of my family history I take Glucosamine, Camu camu (a very rich form of vitamin C) and MSN (methyl sulfonylmethane).
Recently in France I broke my leg in a climbing accident. The break was very close to the knee and my kneecap had been shunted over in a temporary dislocation. X-rays, bone density tests and scans have shown that I have no signs of wear and tear on my knee joint, that the broken bone healed incredibly well and my bone density is excellent.
I have spent my life being a fairly serious horse rider. I power walk a lot, I cycle competitively and I climb rock (and occasionally have accidents!!)
I believe that osteo and rheumatoid arthritis can have a big hereditary factor and I would highly recommend anyone who does have this in their family to take Glucosamine, Camu camu and MSN on a daily basis. Because I do a lot of sports I also take amino acids. I just took a look at the bottle (liquid form) and it says 'Methionine is a sulfur bearing amino acid
and is necessary for cartilage formation'.

Losing weight will help the joints but exercising on painful joints is a problem. I would suggest none impact sport such as cycling or walking but always warm up and warm down before embarking on any exercise and make sure you remain well hydrated.

myotherself -> RE: dodgy knee and exercise (8/17/2012 11:02:44 AM)

Thank you Kalikshama - I will add these exercises to my routine [:)]

So far the stationary bike and elliptical trainer haven't had any kind of negative effect on my knee, although I am stopping as soon as I notice the pain moving from 'bloody hell - exercise is evil!' to 'ouch, my feckin' knee hurts!'.

As for the swimming thing - I live in a seaside town and I'm ok paddling in the water up to about my mid-thighs, but I get the same panicky feelings if I go in any deeper or try to swim even in the shallow water. I've come to the conclusion that I've managed 47 years without swimming, and it's not going to kill me to go another 47 lol

I much prefer to use machines and free weights - and as I have sports equipment in pretty much every room of my house, I'm more inclined to use them.

Again - you guys ROCK!

ETA: Maria - thanks for the cycling info. I love stationary cycling (usually with music blasting or a good horror movie on the tv) and want to get back on my ordinary bicycle again. I guess once I've built up some strength in my legs I can venture out on the roads again without fear of embarrassment [:)]

sunshinemiss -> RE: dodgy knee and exercise (8/17/2012 2:09:36 PM)

I got this lil love note from my trainer today last night:

Sunshine:

Before bed tonight, do 30 minutes of muscle training (like the exercises above)
and then he listed about 3 bazillion of them for me to do.

THEN speed walk for 45 minutes.

(Yeah. I didn't do either of them, but I did call him. I was too tired, and it was too late by the time I got back from work - I'd just put in a 13 hour day and had traveled 2 hours each way. However, I did do a 30 minute walk during our lunch break.)

This weekend take a picture of all your food and send it to me.

Tomorrow morning (that's NOW). Ride your bicycle for 30 minutes before breakfast (this is new - he's never told me that before).

After dinner - another bazillion exercises for muscle training... then speed walk 45 minutes.

I'll be out the door and on my bike soon. It's gonna rain and I gotta get the ride in before the rain. Did I mention it's 6 a.m. on a Saturday!?

Come on, MOS... Let's ride together!

LadyHibiscus -> RE: dodgy knee and exercise (8/17/2012 2:11:38 PM)

Does your trainer know that that kind of exercise before sleep is an insomnia trigger? Ah, youth!

sunshinemiss -> RE: dodgy knee and exercise (8/17/2012 3:05:52 PM)

Oh - sorry... I wasn't clear. It's not that I should do it RIGHT BEFORE BED so much as AFTER DINNER. Kind of a "Don't you go to bed without exercising! Set up your time / schedule it in appropriately, you wonton hussy!"

LadyHibiscus -> RE: dodgy knee and exercise (8/17/2012 3:29:37 PM)

Ah! Very sensible. :) I used to work out RIGHT before bed, but I have horrible insomnia anyway...

sunshinemiss -> RE: dodgy knee and exercise (8/17/2012 3:34:10 PM)

7:30... gotta go now! Bike ride... yay!

MistressDarkArt -> RE: dodgy knee and exercise (8/17/2012 3:39:49 PM)

I highly recommend these in all your shoes, especially athletic/walking shoes. Use them all the time and if you have dress shoes/boots there is a lighter, narrower version for them.

Your back, hips, knees and feet will go AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
