A comment by Tantriqu in another thread prompted a question in my mind.

She had said that she had "met a nice young man on this site" and had gotten him "tested for everything."

I am curious. What, to each of you, constitutes everything? I started composing a list recently and if you include anything and everything that can be sexually transmitted, the list becomes impossibly long. Most are not common, but they do exist.

So, if you were meeting a new partner and wanted them tested, which tests would you have them do? And would you reciprocate?

HIV
Herpes Simplex I and II
HPV
Hepatitis B

Incurable stuff. Though I was reading that new strains of gonorrhea are resisting our most potent black box antibiotics. So that's fun.

HIV, gonorrhea, syphyllis, herpes, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, cytomegalovirus. There is no blood test for human papilloma virus (hpv), although in women it can be diagnosed in a Pap test (cervical cancer screen). Most men with hpv stay asymptomatic (moreso than women), so they won't likely know if they have or spread it, unless it manifests in genital warts. As far as I know, all of these can be transmitted from kissing, mouth to oral, and genital to genital sex.

I've not gotten involved with a new partner in years. If it should happen, I would simply send them to a local medical clinic that handles such things with no drama, as well as go myself to reassure her, and request a full work up. I knkow the clinic and know I wouldn't have to create a list.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Hepatitis C yet. Considering the nature of what we do, it could potentially spread like wildfire through communities of people who scene with multiple partners. This is especially true considering most people clean their equipment to kill HIV, not Hep C, which is tougher to kill. And yes, there are treatments available for it now, but the medications available have a lot of nasty side effects and are not 100% effective.

For me, I expect new partners to be tested for HIV, multiple hepatitis strains, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis at a minimum. This sometimes requires arguments with clinic staff, as every clinic has different STD panels that they run standard, and some of them leave off things that boggle the mind--such as HIV. Yes, HIV isn't necessary to run in a standard STD panel. *rolls eyes*

As noted, there is no test for HPV in men. I can't get any kind of consensus on how meaningful/useful herpes tests are. I've read article after article about these and spoken to medical professionals I know and some are in favor, some say the tests don't actually tell you if the person is infected (as opposed to having been exposed to it but not infected) or able/likely to transmit anything. After a potential partner is tested, I want to see the papers with my own eyes, dammit. Too many people lie about that stuff.

Another thing to keep in mind about STD tests is that some things can take a few months to show up. Everybody should be aware that HIV has a latency period of up to 6 months. That is, a person may be infected with it and able to transmit it but it may not show up on tests until up to 6 months after the initial infection. This is why it's a good idea not only to have new partners tested, but also to talk to them about prior relationships and any risky behavior they might have been engaging in before getting together with you.

Edited to remove a smiley I inserted into the title somehow. I'm still getting used to the way the collarchat posts work.

I get tested for HIV, HPV (via pap smear), gonorrhea and chlamydia once a year, which is about how often I have a new sexual partner. My OBGYN (and PP when I went there) have always said there's no point in doing the other tests without having any symptoms, especially given how expensive they are.

Just curious - why do people get tested for Hep B? Does the vaccine wear off? (Should I get a booster shot? I haven't gotten vaccinated for anything but the flu since I was 18, which was 9 years ago.)

what everyone else has said.

i had a freak out back in the very early 90's and got myself tested for everything, including HIV. my dr asked me if i were promiscuous, i said that i wasn't, but i didn't know if the guys i had been with were.

when my ex and i decided we were serious i went with him to get the tests done. we also had our tests redone after we played in our first swinging session. if a person thinks anything of you then they will be happy to get the tests done.

I was tested for hep b because I was never vaccinated against it. When and where I grew up it just wasn't something that was done, especially if you were poor and going to the free clinic.

And I had my tests done at a city clinic for free when I met Master and that was one of the things they tested for along with the others I mentioned.

I haven't been tested since though because I have not been with anyone else except him from the first day I met him.

In my opinion all such tests - and condoms as well - ought to be abolished. Frankly, I also am of the opinion that sexually or amourously transmitted diseases ought not to be treated.

Yes, me having the herpes simplex virus, this is a death sentence for myself.

my understanding is once vaccinated for hep B it is a lifetime thing. i worked for an organization that paid for the hepB vaccine and i took advantage of that back in the early 90's. before moving to Florida, i got tested every year on my birthday for HIV and all the STD's. RS and i tested together when i arrived in Florida. Since then i have been with no other and neither was he during our time together, so i know i am good to go when the time comes to become fluid bound again.

not having health insurance makes it more difficult to get tested as i did in California, but there is always the health department that does the testing for a low cost. i would of course get tested if required.

After the ending of a relationship where there I had no doubts about that person's fidelity, I went in to be tested for:

Herpes 1 & 2
Hep B & C
HIV
Syphilis
Gonorrhea
Chlamydia

and had a Pap done where they did a DNA test on the pap cells for the most common cancer-causing strains of HPV.

All were negative.

----

As of my last blood donation, I am still CMV-., though that just means my blood can be used for infants and those who are immunocompromised. I don't see a need to test for CMV (it wasn't on the list of available tests at PP), or donate blood to find out if you have antigens for CMV, unless you are planning on engaging in a relationship with an immunocompromised partner. As for Trich and BV, since I use an IUD part of my yearly testing at my OB involves tests for both as well as Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, and since my insurance will pay for it, I do an HIV test at the same time.

All of my paps since have also included DNA marker testing for HPV, and I was clean of it..... until over two years later, I had a sexual partner who claimed to have been abstinent for four years. He was the first sexual partner I'd had since that breakup. My next pap showed DNA markers for HPV, though no cervical cell changes -- indicating a very early-stage infection.

It created quite a bit of tension when I informed him of this, because he was under the impression that HPV was cleared from the immune system within two years and not transmittable after that time. Turns out his partner before me had HPV. He deliberately waited until he thought it had to be out of his system because he didn't want to infect others. He questioned my honesty about who *I* had slept with, and I think it lead to our breakup -- trust is essential in any relationship, and the controversy destroyed that trust. But even if the immune system clears most infections, some men can develop persistent infections, as can some women.

Since that time, I have been extremely careful, both informing my partners and using barrier protection, even though the pap done the next year showed no DNA markers and no cervical changes. I don't know whether I could pass it on to others, so I feel it's only the polite thing to do -- inform partners. Fortunately, men are not likely to develop cancer from the virus, but I would hate to make it where another woman got the scare I did that day when I opened the results of that pap.

As I've been completely abstinent for the last six months, I plan on going back to PP once I have the funds and get re-tested for all the viral gnasties. "Clean Cards" are good things!

------

But if what I just wrote seems like paranoia, I have reason. My father died in 2009 from HIV -- I was with him through his entire time in hospice, hitting his morphine button for him when he was unconscious and couldn't hit himself but was coughing from pneumonia and writhing in pain from the liver tumor he'd developed that was the size of a baby's head when it was diagnosed. Yes, It Can Happen To You. Condoms and regular testing go hand in hand. A person with HIV may live a hell of a lot longer now than they would have if they were diagnosed in 1980, but when the virus defeats all the meds, it's just as nasty of a death as it was in the '80s.

There is conflicting data on that one. OSHA reccomends a titer be drawn 2-3 months after your last injection in the series of three to make sure the vaccine " took " and then every 10-15 years. CDC reports that " most " people who are vaccinated after the age of 6 months keep immunity for 20 years or more.

I got mine in 1986 and have titers drawn every 10 years. So far I still have immunity. BUT I know alot of people who have to be re vaccinated because their titers are too low or show they have lost the immunity.
Where I work we draw titers 2-3 months after we vaccinate for the first time and every 15 years, unless there was exposure and in that case we draw the titer immediately.

One of my co workers was vaccinated, then had titer drawn and the vaccine didn't take. She went through a second series and still no immunity. She did not go for a third time. It's rare but it can happen that your body rejects it.

I would seriously reccomend having a titer drawn at some interval of time just to make sure.

This is making me extremely glad that we have the NHS. You can be tested by the nurse at your GP practice. We also have sexual health clinics where you can be tested, get free condoms, receive treatment and counselling for sexual trauma, pre- termination treatment, fertility tests and get smear tests done. In some parts of the UK you can also get home swab kits for bacterial infections, to be sent away for lab testing. There's also free and confidential phone line information available.

Here, you get a blood test for syphilis and HIV, and a swab test (for women) or urine test (for men) for gonhorroea and chlamydia. BV and thrush will also show up, although they're not technically STIs. Incidentally, they're known as sexually transmitted infections here. If you have physical symptoms such as blisters or warts they'll be examined and treatment given.

You can get a HCV test from a clinic or GP but you have to request it - it's not a routine test. There have been health campaigns in the last few years targeted at at-risk groups. BDSMers weren't one of the groups targeted, but they probably should be.

I'm clean, but the tests that I'd require for both myself and a prospective partner to put our minds at ease are:
HIV, HSV I & II, HPV, BV, gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, trich, cytomegalovirus, Hepatitis B & C, monilia/yeast, and get checked for pubic lice and crabs.
