Thanks LizD for responding before me.

I also know that when people go to sell things on cl, I know it is advised to not be alone when people come to pick up the item that you are planning to sell, as this is a common tactic by thieves to gain access to your home. I've seen reports of crimes like this in the local news media. I think it is a realistic concern.

Echoing liz and ftp. There is a reason the funeral homes, at least around here, provide a house sitter with a company vehicle in the driveway, during the funeral service. Heck, even eleven years ago when my Mom died, a girlfriend stayed at my Dad'd house during the funeral. Crooks take advantage of all opportunities. If you watch the wedding announcements, you will see that more and more of them are either after the fact, or simply state thwt the wedding to take place at a future date.

Local cops and news get bent out of shape for all sorts of things that have no basis in reality; people have a very bad mechanism for risk assessment, individually. Which is why our fear does not often match the things that are most likely to harm us.

This is one of them.

That is so awful that people would do that. Whenever I think I've seen and heard everything.....

descrite, you may assess the risk as low. Living where I do, I do not. You are entitled to assume whatever risks you would like in your own life. The OP asked for advice, and I gave him my thoughts. If he is comfortable putting an ad like this out there, that is his business, agreed, but I see nothing wrong with those of us who see certain risks pointing them out.

But the very fact that funeral homes provide such a service strikes me as indicative of the level of risk involved even though I've never even heard of something like this. I would be careful about assuming that just because you haven't heard of something that it means a) it doesn't happen or b) it doesn't happen very often.

The OP's ad as written strikes me as one that could attract a certain range of either dangerous types, or types that are insincere. And if he chooses to keep the ad as written, he will just have to try to find other ways to screen. Lots of different ways to manage even small risks. But to behave as if the risks are nonexistent seems not wise.

c'mon people, i've posted items for sale on craiglist and nobody's come to rob me. and i live in oakland. OAKLAND. one of the us crime capitals.

i think it's about using common sense here, rather than assuming that the person who wants to rent your room or buy your couch is a psycho rapist cat burgular.

I've decided....as Bush said "Not gon do it".....all the advice here was good...my big screen TV's brings in all the sleaze that want to kill me for a flat screen....good stuff.

I'll just waste way here, no one will ever know....one day I'll just stop posting....someone will find me 12 years later holding my TV clicker....wishing I had a nice turkey dinner.....

I have recently heard of someone coming in and ripping off wedding prezzies at the reception when people were busy doing other things, never heard about their homes being robbed tho or the funeral thing.. I think it happens but not all that often.. there is only so much a person can do to protect yourself, no matter the event, no matter the "what if" scenarios.. you could look both ways crossing the street and at that exact time something falls from above and squashes you like a bug..

there was a study done on craigslist related crimes, the total number of crimes listed that year were 330. compared to the millions of transactions that occur without incident. translated into a percentage?

0.00005% of CL posts related to crime

There are many more and while I will admit some are probably talking about the same crimes,there are enough listed to show concern.While you might live in a safe neighborhood and have no concerns over being a robbery victim,there are a lot more that know there is a chance at being robbed.As far as the funeral thing,the criminals in my county sometimes don't even wait for the funeral.An example is my brother and his business partner were involved in a work related accident[3 of them fell 5 stories] My brother's partner was airlifted to Memphis,Tn and was on life support for about 36 hours before the family pulled the plug.In those 36 hours,this man's house was broken into twice!So do not knock others concerns for personal safety,for their experiences might be a lot different than yours.
