Dude-- don't forget to wire the cat: random attacking psychos may plant a bomb on it. Feline delivery mechanism-- the next step in the evolution of terrorism.

Really?

Might it be that regular posters here have been drinking their own bathwater so long they don't know the taste of objectivity?

I like CL. I've used it quite a bit since I moved to the "big city." Found two cars there, a house for rent, got rid of odds and ends, sold some paintings, found a waffle maker to take to parties, etc etc =p I got a bunch of hostas and day lillies that way, too. And a great patterned chair for my dance room. Rehomed a rat to a lovely older woman who is having great luck with her. CL isn't all bad.

Only one time did I have something slighty scary happen. I was going to buy a dryer and the person gave me directions out into an empty abandoned field. I had heard of people doing this and robbing people, here in Omaha. Luckily, I had my ginormous friend with me, so if someone was waiting to ambush me, they must've changed their minds.

Lookie, you are looking at mere defensive warning systems. You need to go proactive on any intruder with something like this bad boy.

Okay....I've decided....having read everyone's posts, all good stuff....

I'm going to put razor/concertina wire up around my entire 5 acres....8 foot fence, buried 3 feet in concrete (ergo, 11 foot total fence), lasers and cameras every 35 feet, a full 360 degrees, 47 full panoramic video, anyone that actually makes it to the door without significant burns or internal hemorrhaging has to have a full DNA screening (fuck....I just found some candy the kids didn't take last night....okay...back to the discussion at hand....), 3 doors at the front entry...each with varying chemical analysis as they enter the home. Sniff sniff.....

Laser sensors on the top of the house in 4 locations and in 11 locations at ground level....I want to know every movement.

Windows will be wired with motion sensors as well as heat sensors.

Every electrical outlet will have a chemical tox screen device in it in case someone opts to put Serin gas inside the home via the electrical outlets.

The cat door will be wired for both sensors as well as electrical invasion devices....if it ain't my cat....it's dinner. In 37 seconds.

I was gonna try and save a few bucks getting some chick who needed a cheap place to stay who wanted to cook, figuring it'd save me easily 3 grand a year.....now, I'll be stopping at the bank next Thursday to borrow $300,000.00 to keep myself protected from all these insaneamaniacs......

More to come....

Almost perfect, but you forgot to mention momma and trains and rain ......and gettin drunk.

But the very fact that funeral homes provide such a service strikes me as indicative of the level of risk involved

Logical fallacy... the fact that the funeral home offers the service doesn't prove it's necessary at all.

Homer: Not a bear in sight. The Bear Patrol must be working like a
charm.
Lisa: That's spacious reasoning, Dad.
Homer: Thank you, dear.
Lisa: By your logic I could claim that this rock keeps tigers away.
Homer: Oh, how does it work?
Lisa: It doesn't work.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: It's just a stupid rock.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Lisa: But I don't see any tigers around, do you?
[Homer thinks of this, then pulls out some money]
Homer: Lisa, I want to buy your rock.

And the above comments re burglary should be heeded. You mention two huge TV`s and go on and on about how big the rooms are. Thieves will do the math. `Hmm...big TV`s. they cost money. lots more space...probably also occupied by stuff that cost money. Think I`ll have my gf call him to àpply`, get the address and a look around the place. And find out which weeks he`s away`

By putting that ad in Craigslist, you are advertising your house and its contents and offering it up for burglary.

Letting strangers that you found on Craigs into your home is *always* going to be viewed as a security risk to me, but then I'm mistrustful like that.

As an alternative suggestion, is there a university or college close to you? B/c what you are offering is an excellent opportunity for a student working their way through school. It's been my experience the young people willing to work and go to school full time have a marvelous work ethic, and that appears to transfer into the rest of their ethics as well.

Still no guarantee you won't get ripped off by your cleaner/roommate, but I thought I'd put it out there.

well, lookie could always interview people at coffee shops, have serious inquirers fill out a form and conduct a background/credit check (instead of giving the address to everybody), which i would recommend for anyone looking to move a stranger into their home. yes, that takes more time and effort than posting a CL ad and crossing your fingers, but it may alleviate some of the heebie-jeebies you feel.

CP's suggestion is great too... college students are great for that sort of thing!

Ya know what? I'm going to open up a gawdamn coffee shop, for the SOLE PORPOISE (noises made like an old 60's sea world TV show) JUST to interview chics who can make low fat, non carb food.....BUT......

She's gonna have to get past all the concertina wire and the laser beams...if she can do that....she's my chicka.....

(And maybe.....just maaaaaaaybe.....I'll let her drive the Vega station wagon on weekends....).

And THAT's the way it's fucking going down!

Yepper.

Wow...this has turned into something else....I do want to thank all those who offered advice....I've decided to learn to cook after all this!

Granted, it'll be tea, canned soup, and a bunch of prepackaged foods but...it's better than "death by craigslist"!
