naughtynick81 -> Why I don't take political correctness seriously these days (12/7/2012 2:12:29 AM)

It's a one way street so to speak. Such like it's so easy to accuse a male of misogyny, on the other hand, it's hardly taken seriously to accuse a woman of misandry. It's so easy to accuse a white person of racism, on the other hand, it's hardly taken seriously when accusing a person of any other race in the western world of racism. It's so easy to accuse chistianity of being bad, on the other hand, how dare anyone accuse islam of being bad.

People have these ultra sensitive lenses towards sexism, racism, being anti islam, when its going in one direction while being totally blithe when its going in the other. This is one of the main problems I have with political correctness these days.

This new world order of political correctness is doing more harm than good to humanity.

Politically Correct People have been shown to produce brain damage in rats and also to cause schizoprenia-like changes. Low doses tend to produce numbness, while higher doses may result in anesthesia. Alterations in mood are common, sometimes resulting in acts of violence or suicide....

Oh wait, that's the wrong PCP.

Being "PC" is one of those fake charges cons throw, to cover for their own intellectual dishonesty.

"Today, however, the big threat to our discourse is right-wing political correctness, which — unlike the liberal version — has lots of power and money behind it. And the goal is very much the kind of thing Orwell tried to convey with his notion of Newspeak: to make it impossible to talk, and possibly even think, about ideas that challenge the established order.
Thus, even talking about “the wealthy” brings angry denunciations; we’re supposed to call them “job creators”. Even talking about inequality is “class warfare”."

The origins of the term political correctness seem to be in the 18th century when it was widely used as meaning to be in line with current political thought and is different from the current usage. Though this hasn't stopped rightwing academics merging the two terms to prove it has links to Marxism, which itself is a term that is really a bastardisation. Contemporary political correctness seems to have originated in US colleges where a misinterpretation of Wittgenstein was used as an intellectual foundation for a purely political idea. Still, it spread like a virus over to this side of the pond but fortunately it seems to be mainly confined to English language countries though some has jumped language barriers.

Political correctness has been used and misused by both left and right as a justification for their own social dogma. I find it pointless listening to people who spout political correct ideas (left or right) without an intellectual argument to underpin their views, simply because they are stuck in a grove.

Owner59 -> RE: Why I don't take political correctness seriously these days (12/7/2012 3:39:53 AM)

Meh......it`s current use is mostly on the right....least you can give us some real examples from the left.

By real I mean asswipes like former democrat Joe Lieberman, who equates any kind of criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism.

Or the current lot of bigots in the GOP who degrade Islam and Muslims for sport and whine about their freedom of speech when called on it..

Edwynn -> RE: Why I don't take political correctness seriously these days (12/7/2012 3:43:59 AM)

The precise term "politically correct" actually originated in 'leftist' journals. After whatever diatribe from some writer, either the writer or some respondent might say something like "but we can't avoid the reality of the situation," or, we can't forsake the reality or else we are just being politically correct."

The far right, having no imagination, much less any capacity for originality, glommed this for themselves, co-opted it, and then took that ball and ran with it.

BTW, this was obviously some time ago, when the left actually had a brain, and reality took precedence over ideology, which is several universes away from the current situation.

Right-wing political correctness is basically 100% of what Fuxnews does......

Case in point.

This is just useless, folks.

They don`t write or make their own reports or news stories.....

They just take what the MSM is saying and spin it...change it...destort it....and cram it so full of bull shit that the stories become palatable for right-wing consumption.

Doesn`t humor/exaggeration require some truth to be funny/relevant?

The same type of nonsense passes for political correctness when it is claimed in history how men treated their wives. Sure, there will always be men who oppress women, but to paint this on all men throughout history and ignore chivalry and protection of women is seriously lopsided.

When it comes to political correctness, it's so easy to generalise men as a gender or whites as a race. But if we generalise women or minorities, watch out.

Ahhh....lost big in divorce court...eh?   [;)]

We should feel sorry ....why?

The first time I ever heard the term "political correctness" was at some point in the mid 1980s (although I understand the term originates much sooner than that). One way of looking at the way society has changed is in looking at TV shows and movies from the 1960s, 70s and early 80s. I find it interesting that when younger people look at movies from that era, they look at it from a completely different perspective than we did when we actually saw those movies back then. I think of this whenever I read the IMDb message boards for older movies, a couple of examples might be Sixteen Candles or Revenge of the Nerds. Or even shows like All in the Family have to come with warning messages now, because the younger people of today would look at it completely differently than we did when the show first came out.

Sometimes, political correctness might go a bit too far, no matter if it's right-wing pc or left-wing pc. I often read "political correctness" as "a lack of a sense of humor." Some people take themselves far too seriously, and these are the ones who tend to fall into the politically correct bent. Others might find political correctness to be a bit stifling, since we have to find "diplomatic" ways of saying things when we could just blurt it out and let the shit fly. But on the other hand, there's something to be said for simple politeness and not contributing to toxic rhetoric. But political correctness doesn't even deal with that, so perhaps just general civility might be the better way to go than pc.

Depending on the person who uses the term , its usually just whinging cos someone dared to called him/her on his particular bullshit and ugliness.

This is what I've always considered "political correctness" to be.

While I completely agree that politeness and respect are very important, not letting people state their true feelings, as shitty as they may be, allows discrimination to go underground. Isn't it unhealthy to bottle up your emotions?

naughtynick81 -> RE: Why I don't take political correctness seriously these days (12/7/2012 5:55:16 AM)

As democrats seem to be on the political correct side these days, were they ever racist?

Tell us all how they refused to end slavery and were associated with the KKK. lolz

Owner59 -> RE: Why I don't take political correctness seriously these days (12/7/2012 6:11:30 AM)

You`re confusing normal folk`s natural abhorrence with the right`s bigotry as PC....

And history didn`t stop when the the democratic party was associated with the KKK.

After kicking those ass wipes out of our party.....they joined the ass wipes in the GOP.

Their lilly-white vanilla front group ,the Council of Conservative Citizens ,hosts GOP leaders and thinkers all the time.....as in today.

No need to thank me for the remedial history lesson.

I suppose if somebody feels that they have an entitlement to act like a rude, obnoxious, bigot then pointing out that they're talking rude obnoxious, bigoted crap is a bit of an imposition.

Most of what frothing reactionaries dismiss as "political correctness" is just good manners, after all...

The right is perfectly within their frre speech rights to say/do anything(legal)....no matter how awful it makes them sound/look.

The rest of us also have free speech rights and can respond with speech and call a spade ...a spade.

It`s not an attempt to silence the right`s words or be PC...but rather to expose the rightists and embarrass them with their words.

Like we did with Mittens......most of what damaged him came from his own mouth.

Quite.

But then again it's always much easier to blame your issues and insecurities on other people than actually facing up to them and making the effort to deal with them, isn't it?
