Marc2b -> RE: Why I don't take political correctness seriously these days (12/7/2012 8:16:11 AM)

In modern day discourse much of what passes for debate is, all to often, pissing matches over definition of words and terms. After all, the ability to define a term is the ability to set the limits on a debate. Not surprisingly, people favor definitions that will cast the debate in terms favorable to their position and unfavorable, or even excluding, the opposition's arguments altogether.

"Racism" is one such term. "Political correctness" is another. As for myself, I see political correctness as the demand to conform to one particular ideology (be it political, religious, or whatever) coupled with the enforcement (or attempt to enforce) such orthodoxy. Telling someone not to use certain words or phrases because others might consider them insensitive is NOT political correctness... it is merely the exercise of freedom of speech. Telling someone not to use certain words or phrases or else they will suffer some sort of sanction that violates the speakers rights IS political correctness. This is why universities, with all of their silly speech codes, have become associated with political correctness.

Personally, I think the notion of enforcing orthodoxy is better covered by the term "tyranny."

Problem is... this isnt a free speech issue on CM.

Nope. Hence whining about political correctness and people playing victim because they can't post racial or gay bashing abuse without getting moderated.

Great post!
It's a pleasure to read what you have to say.
You have the ability to make your point succinctly, and with clarity and often with brevity.

I know. Where did people get the notion that the site has to bow down to their demands of free speech?

Often from people who get hilariously arsey about anybody else who says something that they don't like as well, which always adds a hypocritical cherry to the top of the cake, doesn't it?

This new world order of political correctness is doing more harm than good to humanity.

Pfft. 'Political correctness' has, by now, evolved to mean little else other than 'what the Right doesn't like'. As always with terms beloved of righties who want to get into lots of left-cudgelling, it's deliberately left vague, the better for them to define it just the way they want it. And as for there being a 'new world order' of it - bollocks.

Their (CM) house, their rules.

Dont like the rules?

Go home.

If what you say is offensive/or crossing major boundaries, I am not going to "go along with it"/nor back you up, because I agree with it or like you.

If you are one of my online/or real life "friends", I am going to email you at the very least and tell you of my concerns.
I would have done the same in high school, and I am well past high school or the playground.

I wouldnt expect you to agree with it if you find it offensive. I have disagreed with just about everyone here at one time or another... and had no problem voicing that disagreement.

Oh that's not aimed at you, that's just how I do business.
I have seen far too many here and other places in cyberland that would never stand up or say something to or against their buddies.

I don't roll like that, and if you don't like me for asking you or saying something, oh well.

If I like you, care about you, or feel you are open to me asking you about it, I won't say anything to you on the boards, but will just send you an email.

Didnt think it was aimed at me. Many believe there are some cliques on CM. I guess there are.... I just never found them. lol

I see it ALL the time, and it's sad yet amusing.

I never said it was.

My point was that some people might accuse me of engaging in political correctness for labeling Edwynn's use of certain terms as offensive but I am not because I have no power to censor, nor made any attempt to censor, then I am not engaging in political correctness.

tazzygirl -> RE: Why I don't take political correctness seriously these days (12/7/2012 9:35:03 AM)

On a message board, each of us has the power to see or not see what we wish, or dont wish, to see. Being as we are all adults, I would go with the belief that someone who is out to flame or demean others will be quickly spotted.. and mostly ignored.

Out in the real world, that option isnt always available. It isnt always about just adults interacting. It isnt about just words, its often the meaning behind those words and the actions correlating to them.

In other words... if I call someone.. say... a "coon" (and god I hate that word), then I am exercising my free speech. If I say it and I point to a noose hanging from my tree.... If I say it while hiking up the rent for some and not others.. If I say it and then sponsor a bill to reduce their rights.... then its no longer just "freedom of speech".

Hiding behind the free speech issue is just that... hiding.

Well, during my good moments maybe... it depends upon the time of day. In the afternoons, say around four o'clock (give or take twenty minutes) I can get very long winded. Fortunately, most people don't see these more rambling posts because of my tendency to doze off while writing them.
