So I was messing around with my sweetie the other night and had a great time, no intercourse, but lots of fun stuff.  I got a yeast infection a few days later.  I think it was caused just from fingering, is that normal?  I don't have a history of this as a problem for me, but it sure isn't fun!

With vaginas, "normal" kinda goes out the window.

I have an 'above average' yeast level all the time, so does a good friend of mine, our gynos told us this during our exams.  We've both heard this for a few years now, and shockingly, we've both only gotten them when we were on antibiotics.  "Normally" people would say this should make us more susceptable to getting a YI, but for us, our bodies mediate themselves at the higher end of the 'normal' spectrum. 

If he didn't wash his hands, it's very possible this could have caused your YI, though I doubt men have always scrubbed down right before getting into foreplay with you for your entire sexual life, right?  So it was probably a fluke thing, wouldn't be too worried unless it becomes a pattern, then it's time to see a doctor to make sure there isn't an issue that needs to be treated where the YI is just a symptom of something troubling with your body.

You're right though, it doesn't make it any more fun, sorry [:'(]

If it does become a recurring problem with this person and their fingers, they need to a- make sure they wash their hands more often (even if it means becoming OCD about it) and b- get checked out to make sure there isn't anything going on with them.

Oh thank you,  I was on antibiotics, which would explain a lot.  He is a neat freak so I didn't think hand washing was the problem.   Thank you for the quick response.

Oh, good, well there's your most reasonable cause.  It doesn't make it any more ejoyable, but now at least you know you don't need to start being scared of fingers...that's good, right? lol [:D]

Antibiotics are made to kill germs/organisms that are making us sick, of course, but they also kill off some of our *good* bacteria/organisms.  There's a lot of these good bacteria in our vaginas, and they keep the natural yeast levels down so we're not having infections all the time.  When we're on antibiotics, they can kill off enough of these good bacteria to leave room for the yeast to take over...like a war or good vs. evil lol 

You're almost guaranteed it was the antibiotics.  Could've been germs on his hands too, but most likely if your vagina had it's usual amount of good lil soldiers fighting off the bad stuff like it does when you're not on antibiotics, it would've just killed the germs by itself and you never would've had a problem.

Hope it's cured quick.  If you haven't already, go grab yourself something from the pharmacy, otherwise you'll suffer for a looong time.  You probably have already, but just incase [:D]

I have made it to the pharmacy, but it isn't working, it hurts like hell and now I can't even sleep.  Sooo miserable.  I might be swearing off fingers for awhile.

It takes a day or so to work. I know....it sucks. I agree that the antibiotics are the most likely culprit....I know that I have a problem with certain antibiotics doing the same thing. If you notice it happening whenever you take them you can ask the doc for a prescription of Diflucan along with your antibiotics so that you can take it at first sign and it will generally ward it off. If it goes on beyond a day or so you will want to get checked just to make sure it's not a bacterial infection rather than a yeast infection.

It has been my experience that if you get the "short route" yeast infection meds, that is the 3-day... it further inflames already sensitive tissue.  I always get the seven day, it takes longer, but it is much milder and does not "burn" like the 3-day.  As usual, YMMV.

For me the YI is a regular occurance. Eating a lot of yogurt will help to get rid of the infection. Also using just a bit of peroxide in a douche can help too. There is a great pill that will help Difflucan it is not an instant cure but is a one time pill.

All very good advice.  The yogurt should contain "live cultures" aka acidolphilous.  I'd never heard about using hydrogen peroxide in a douche, but did a web search and found the following information:

DOUCHING
Never use the 35% hydrogen peroxide in a douche. The tissues in the vaginal tract are quite sensitive, so be sure to use the proper dilution if you wish to prepare your own douche.  Use no more than 3 ounces of 3% hydrogen peroxide in a one quart douche bag.  Many of the minor irritations of the vaginal tract, as well as yeast infections, respond very well to this solution in a douche twice a week.[image]http://www.oxygentherapies.com/1x1.gif[/image]
If you'd had a course of antibiotics, I doubt very much your partner's fingering had anything to do with your infection.  I know it is uncomfortable, but it does take time for the medications to work.  A couple of days, you'll be right as rain.

That's interesting, the peroxide douching.  I'm on antibiotics right now and am using the only other method I believed could work, plain yogurt soaked into a tampon.

It definitely works, I've neve gotten a YI while on antibiotics since I started to use this method (found it on Google, of course lol) but it is messy and if a douche would work, that would be a better option.

Hopefully I won't need antibiotics again for a looong while, but when I do I'll be trying this out.

Have had to take antibiotics many times and usually a YI comes right along with it sooooo i also get a Diflucan along with my antibiotic script.  Take one pill is lasts 7 days and works quickly.

ah, yeah ... antibiotics suck.  If you find yogurt to be completely disgusting (like I do) you can take acidophilus suppliments which do the same thing - keeping the yeast to managable levels.

Only yogurt with live cultures work, and you have to eat a lot of it.  Plus, yogurt has so much added sugar, and yeast feeds off sugar so it can be counter-productive.  Antiobiotics kill off the bacteria which kills off yeast.  They also kill of acidophilus/bifidophilus (good bacterias), so if you're on antibiotics, wait until you're off and then overindulge in the other stuff.  You can find a blend of "good bacterias" at your local health food store.

Yeast feeds off sugar and fermented foods - so if you're susceptable or have a current yeast infection, avoid mushrooms, vinegar, beer/wine, fruit, sugar or product with these things in them.  People with frequet sinus infections should adhere to the same.

Owned is right. Yogurt is not really the best, especially the kind from the store because most of that is really just yougurt flavored stuff, NOT the real thing. You'd be better off getting a GOOD live probiotic. (note-a good one will be expensive) The problem is, if you end up taking antibiotics too much without replenishing the friendly flora in the long run you will have a lowered immune system and possibly auto immune problems.

The easiest, cheapest, most natural thing to help with a yeast infection is concentrated cranberry tablets. My doctor used to tell me to drink cranberry juice, but now the tablets make it a lot easier. They are highly concentrated. If you are prone to a yeast infection, especially when you take antibiotics, take cranberry daily while you are on the antibiotics and that should help.

As for the acidophilus pills, can you get these at any health store?  Or they're prescription only?

i do not know what products you have in the US. but in Australia in health food stores ( where they sell vitamins and food supplements andnatural arthritic cures) you are able to buy   'acidopholous tabs' by the five hundred and or thousand. most aussie chicks I know simply take one daily and  you need not a prescription  or a doctors appointment, much less messy than yoghurts .not sure this helps..

Thanks Kendra, I'll have a look next time I'm in the local health shop here.  I think a previous poster was from the US, so they should (hopefully) be available where I live. 

You're right, yogurt really is messy, I just figured it was the only natural way so took the mess vs. convenience of the drug store products.  Thanks a bunch [:D]

Yogurt wtih active cultures still tend to contain more sugar than actual cultures. 

I am in the US and get them at Whole Foods Markets, or at my local health food store as well.  No prescription needed.  Ask someone at the counter for help and they will likely be happy to assist.
