Is this thread just attention seeking?

If your hoping for pats on the head from women
who do have some kind of supercilious view
of themselves, then maybe some guys are
dogs.

If you had wanted a discussion, you should have
called this, "Ladies, do you think men are like
dogs?"... Saying, "Men are dogs" is just as bad
as the guy saying feminists are hypocrites.

FYI, I know there's a bit of a language barrier
between poms, yanks and ozzies but so people
are aware, despite being mans best friend, in
Australia calling a man a Dog is an insult, in it's
insult form it means a guy is untrustworthy,
selfish garbage, someone to be kept at a
distance or looked down on, it's an attack on his
character.

I don't know how it got that meaning...

Let me clarify.

Carol and I were driving the other day and I commented on this topic. My thought was that feminism was dealing with a truly, seriously out of whack society. "The pendulum" had swung way, way over to the male side. It took a lot of pushing to get it go swing back. All of that is predictable. What is also predictable is the pendulum didn't stop dead center. Instead it kept going and continues to go further and further past the midpoint. I'm just now seeing counter pressure from both men and women. I am gratified that mothers are starting to see what is being done to their male sons and slowly getting aggravated by it.

All of that, including the price I have personally paid for it as a male, was well worth it in my mind. The original situation NEEDED to get fixed and I'm damned glad for those feminists who took up the fight. As much as I now see feminism as the wrong thing and am starting to ponder battle plans I'm also stuck by the war on women because once again, if the republicans have their way, the pendulum is going in places I don't want it to go even at cost to myself. So yeah... in that sense... it's the feminists and I suppose I might end up becoming one again if I must... but it very much feels like siding with the enemy to protect against a bigger threat. Thanks to the older ones and to the newer ones... be careful where you draw your battle lines.

Of course, it's also possible that I'm entirely incorrect and instead these thoughts are driven by a deep bitterness because (drumroll please and a nod to nick) I can't get laid.

Oh, and the "men are defective women" quote you can attribute to me. What I mean by that is that we are measured by female standards. And when we predictably fail to measure up to those standards then we are "base", "slovenly", "incompetent", "child-like", "can't clean a house", "can't cook a meal", etc.

I've done a little digging and see Dilbert's Scott Adams said "women generally believe men are “defective” women" in 2006 in a blog post that has since been taken down but has been reposted here:

I'm counting, and I see more men than women perpetuating these ideas.

I'm amused by my downstairs neighbor's incompetence in the kitchen and cook for him often. I don't think less of him for it but appreciate the opportunity to nurture him. He sharpens my knives, hangs shelves, installs lights, shovels, and more. I'm impressed with his competence with tools.

I don't believe that the kitchen is the domain of women, though - I've dated and been friends with several excellent male cooks and chefs* from whom I learned a lot. My mother was an adequate (but not gifted) cook and she was the one who did all the home repairs - I don't see the ability to use tools as a man's job either, although being mechanically inclined is definitely in the Plus column in regards to potential mates. I also greatly admire a friend who was able to transform his talent for making jewelry into generating the funds to have a yoga retreat center built in Costa Rica. (He was one of the chefs.)

So in writing this out, I've learned I don't measure in any particular area, but am impressed when someone displays a talent or passion in their chosen area.

And if a man can't hit the clothes hamper with his socks but can hit my subspace buttons, I am delighted to pick his socks up off the floor.


* I'm using chef to mean someone who was professionally trained and employed.

Ah. Right.

I was *entirely* unaware that calling a man a 'dog' in the USA or Australia had such nasty connotations. It doesn't, here in England - or at least not in my experience. (It might do in other parts of England, come to think of it.) All I meant to convey by 'dog' was 'big, rough, loud' etc, etc - though also 'loyal, friendly, straightforward' - all the likeable things about dogs, as well, that is.

Nope. "Men are dogs" is pejorative here. The only time I hear women say it is when they get dumped by one.

Well, it *is* a pretty bad thread if you take 'dog' in the sense that it seems to be used in Aus. But your equivalent re a different title doesn't work for me, given my use of the word. For me, maybe 'Women are Cats' would work better. But, then, that could well have all kinds of nasty connotations for some people that I also know nothing at all about.
