I rarely ask health question on hear but I am looking for what works for other people, so I kinda gotta ask people.

My daily work out has been really intense lately and on top of my work out yesterday I had a 2 hour shoot. I know my body is changing form and such from my work outs and I have had not had any serious muscle cramps before, not like this.

This evening my thigh and hip area really hurt. Not, like I injured myself but a sever muscle cramp.

On top of that I started my cycle today and I have NEVER had cramps before but I am now. Grrr....

So my question is what do you do when / if you get sever muscle cramps from work outs along with menstrual cramps?

I have residual pain from a fractured pelvis that is sort of a nagging annoyance, but if you combine it with monthly cramps, it can get gnarly.

Soma/ flexeril are marketed as muscle relaxers, but in all honesty they are just meant to knock you out. I do better with anti inflammitories like Advil, and a heating pad.

I do a lot of stretching before and after workouts, so I don't really get a whole lot of cramps for that reason.

I do a lot of stretching before and after but I think the 2 hour shoot on top of my daily work out was a bit much yesterday. Especially since it was a physical shoot.

I don't want anything that is going to knock me out.
So perhaps in the morning I will pick up a heating pad and Advil. That seems simple enough. Lol

Thanks!

You can always microwave a damp towel, throw it in a plastic bag, and wrap the whole thing in another towel.

Bam.

Instant heating pad.

Oh I will do that now!

Thank you so much.

I have NEVER EVER had menstrual cramps before yet alone sever muscle cramps. I did learn a lesson with this though. Days I have a shoot in the morning, to skip my daily work out especially if it's a physical shoot.

My primary told me not to do my work out yesterday.
I didn't listen, I didn't want to break my routine.

pfft... I gotta listen to him!

I never get them from work outs and cramps. I always get mine out of the blue, they're random and they hurt like a mother fucker and i can do nothing but scream and cry and yell Daddy help me it hurts.

Daddy rubs and smacks the area if I can stand him to touch it.

I would likely do heating pads, an epsom salt bath, perhaps a castor oil pack, and likely Traumeel homeopathic, oral and topical. Homeopathic Arnica montana and Rhus toxicodendron may be helpful.

Might want to take a look at your potassium intake as well.

Possibly your calcium and vitamin D.

Potassium most people who work out understand and regulate.

The other two, not so much.

Increase your body's absorption of calcium without having to take excessive doses by getting plenty of vitamin D. The active form of vitamin D increases absorption of both calcium and magnesium and inhibits excretion of calcium through the urine. Without vitamin D, calcium is very poorly absorbed. More than half of Americans ages 65 and older are deficient in vitamin D, according to Harvard Health Publications. If you spend the majority of your days indoors or live in a place where days are very short in the winter, you may have difficulty getting enough vitamin D from sun exposure. Eating vitamin D-fortified foods or taking a supplement is a simple, convenient option to ensure that you obtain sufficient levels of vitamin D and calcium.

My mother ised to get horrible leg cramps. Asking a few physicians, and stumbled across the answer of taking vitamin's d and c together, as in dairy and oj.

Often these problems can be diet regulated, or just a simple adjustment in vitamins.

"Vitamin D appears promising for the treatment of inflammation-related pain syndromes and one of them is menstrual cramping pain," said Dr. JoAnn Manson, chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine at the Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital, who co-authored a commentary on the new trial, also published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Just a few things to consider.

My primary told me this morning that he and I need to sit down and look at my vitamins and things again since my work out has intensified a lot since last time we did. He told me the heating pad is a wonderful idea and I should have on around anyways.

Some people find that magnesium supplements can help a lot.

Your question will generate more solutions than you can imagine. Menstral cramps are a response to the monthy cycle most likley related to the loss of electrolytes due to the menstral flow and related uterine contractions. Muscle cramps related to exercise are a different animal. The one key element in muscle cramps not touched on in any of your responses is fluid intake. During the winter we don't have the same urge to drink water as we do in the summer heat. Yet we have the same need. Minimum daily intake should be 2 liters and on days you work out and sweat a lot additional fluid intake is needed. Other causes of cramps if fluid intake is adequate and determine that by the color of your urine. The clearer the better. Then start looking at electrolyte intake and experiment with what your body may need, additional sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium. Not neccissarily all of them or single one, it becomes a very individual thing at this point. Be aware of excessive potassium intake can effect your heart rythem.

Oh.. I didn't mean to imply I was doing one of the other.
That's what I get for posting so early.

First of all if I'm doing really intense workouts, I make sure I'm getting a lot of calcium and potassium. I use milk and bananas, but you can easily use supplements. I tend to be more achey around my period, so I employ the use of a heating pad and it works wonders. Sometimes a hot bath to soak the extra sore muscles works. In addition to all that, make sure that you are stretching just a bit longer or changing the types of stretches to focus on the areas that hurt more.

Is try Ibuprofen" too simplistic an answer? It or Midol (though I don't think you need the diuretic effect of Midol), always worked for me.

I experienced the same thing back when I was still menstruating. I found as I aged, my body was more sensitive to muscle cramps after a workout.

Heating pads are great for soothing muscles and providing some muscle relaxation, but make sure it's moist heat. Also, if any of your pain is due to inflammation, you need to alternate the heating pad with ice, in 15 minute increments.

Too much heat may soothe the area but increase inflammation.

lmpishlilhellcat,
We did tweak and change my vitamins and supplement as well as my protein intake.
I picked up some epsom salt that worked wonders as well.

BlkTallFullfig,
I do take Advil when I need it, for pain and such.
However, I don't like taking it often. I did the past couple of days though due to the horrible cramps.

Midol never worked for me for menstrual cramps, which like I said are new.
