people are bitching about his settlement likes its a lottery winning?

wtf

Because it is. If some unemployed asshole had kidnapped the guy and kept him locked in a cellar for 22 months, the nut who did it would go to jail and the victim wouldn't get a cent. But luckily for him, the assholes in this case were public employees, so he gets to soak the taxpayers for millions of dollars. Wonderful. Bad things happen to people all the time, but if you get lucky you can enrich yourself by punishing the innocent. Spectacular, eh?

Here's what I think: I think the responsible parties should be facing charges, recompense should proportionate to the expenses he will incur as result of his suffering, and the award should come directly out of the pockets of the responsible parties to the limit of their financial ability, with only any remainder from the taxpayers. I know, I know, it's shocking. Did you ever hear anything so cruel and bizarre? I apologize. I should be ashamed. So bite me.

The difference is that, in this case, those incompetent Govt employees were operating in the name of the State, using the entire apparatus of the State to enforce their negligence/malice on the unfortunate victim. In effect, the State kidnapped him for the duration of his incarceration.

Like any other legal entity, the State is responsible for its actions and those of its agents. To the best of my knowledge, incompetence is not a legal defence.

Because its the tax payers who put the employees into positions of power that allowed the abuse to happen.

And yet the county went out of its way to protect those "responsible parties", so the county pays. Not to mention this wasnt the lone act of one man, this was the actions of a few agencies, all who knew this man was there, many who had sworn to uphold the laws, many who ignored this man's rights. Your friendly neighborhood nut case in your example made no such promises.

I know, I know.... its basic logic.

I will pass on the biting.

So a person with known psych issues and lung cancer, with a penchant for drinking and driving, and receiving stolen goods now has 15.5MM at his disposal (minus whatever goes to attorney and whatever taxes/fees may apply)?

I bet the follow up story to this doesn't end well.

You didn't bother to actually read the article did you?

His cancer came about after he was released several years ago and according to him had nothing to do with his incarceration.
Drinking and driving was suspected and never proven or possibly even tested. Should I post the article about the bitch with a badge in Utah that ran people in for DUI even when they blew 0.00?
The car was shown to be loaned to him by the owner.

He's got a long criminal history, Hill. The CNN link lacks the journalistic integrity to include that information.

What integrety would that involve, would it change something in that they just threw him in the slammer and forgot about him if he only had a speeding ticket when he was a juvenile?

Amazing how its an outrage to treat Manning as they did, yet its perfectly acceptable to treat this man worse.

There was a very good in depth article in Rolling Stone titled "Slow Motion Torture" about the effects of solitary confinement on a man who was inexplicably transferred from a low security facility to a Super Max. Unfortunately, I no longer have a subscription and cannot get the article online.

Speaking of no integrity...

No, Ron, that the guy had a long rap sheet doesn't in any way change the crime that he was a victim of, but failing to include it in their profile of the victim (unless the info was deliberately deleted from the snip in the OP) is a fine example of CNN painting the picture they want their audience to have, rather than reporting the story. They are quite happy to tell the audience the man had a history of mental illness though.

Oh, well, no journalist displays such surfiet of integrety.  Why look at Faux Nuze or Breitbart or Boortz or WND or the DailyCaller or the Mail or ................any rightwing blog.

I think that comparatively (in this case) it is commendable.

prior crimes he committed were then, his mental illness (history et al) is still now.

Didn't he pay for his prior crimes?   Has he been judged cured of the mental defect.

Nice to see you honestly assess the category of journalism CNN belongs in, Ron.

I assess all journalism the same way these days, even NPR...However, I do not put all slop in one bucket as simpletons are wont to do.

I would get my news from the sources in the following order:

BBC
NPR
CNN

and dismiss the rest of the asswipe out there out of hand, by and large.

Right. Nothing that might contradict your prejudices, or cause any questioning of your assumptions. Got it.

I'm confused. It is your assertion that BBC is a left-leaning media source? If so, I disagree and I watch it all the time (seeing as I live in Canada now).

Out of curiosity, which more right-leaning media source do you think I ought to be reading? I mean that as a serious question. I have yet to find ANY left or right leaning source that hasn't toppled entirely over the cliff into asshattery (eg: the fox news and msnbc crowd). I find BBC to be reasonably balanced and at least some times actually reports on real world events.

His criminal history was already paid for previously. It has absolutely nothing to do with what happened to him here.

Out of thirty searches I did, only three mentioned his criminal record and two out of those three have been certainly less than reliable in the past.
He did his time, he wasnt tried for these particular crimes, but derailing the facts of THIS particular horror and blaming it on "left wing media" is not surprising.
