That's exactly it. The biscuit alone has 20 grams of carbs and you didn't eat enough protein or fat to slow down the absorption of carbs.

Carbs and protiens are both bad for diabetics in excess. You really need to go to a good diabetic class. It sounds as if you are unwilling to change your diet due to taste. My mother also did that until recently when she was told she is in Stage 3 renal failure. Good luck to you. Also start making your doctors work for you that is what they are there for be an advocate for yourself and research things before just accepting what the doctor or people from the internet tell you there are several medical sites that are available. The mayo clinic has a good one.

No offense to anyone I do know you all try to help.

I am actually trying very hard to change my lifestyle. I am new to trying to give two shits however.

I honestly dont know other than the bisket what was so carb heavy about the meal. My mom and dad both, neither saw anything wrong with the meal either.

Though obviously the bs disagrees!

Biscuit - was at least 20 carbs - simple carbs
Sweet potato - 18 grams of carbs for 1/2 of one - simple carbs
Asparagus - 3 grams per spear - complex carbs

I don't know what else was in the potato salad, but keep in mind that most of the mayo brands contain sugar.

It's not so much that you overloaded on the carbs, it's that your ratios were way off and the majority of your carbs were simple carbs. Eating one little chicken wing was not enough protein, so carbs were the largest portion of your meal.

It is good. It's a complex carb. But, it still has carbs and you have to be aware of those carbs.

Complex carbs are good carbs. They digest slower and don't give you a burst and a crash.

Simple carbs are things like starches. They absorb fast, give a spike and then a crash.

You should be keeping your simple carbs to very small amounts. The majority of your carbs should come from complex carbs, ie: green vegetables or legumes like black beans, kidney beans, etc.

Okay, I'm diabetic too, and a week ago I decided to attack it tooth and nail. I make one huge salad over the weekend and eat from it through the week. I also make up a huge soup, consisting of nothing but vegetables, and do the same. They displace a lot of other foods that are less good for me.

The more vegetables you can have, the better. The less processed food, the better.

You have to be careful with baked goods. Especially if they were baked before you got them, or from a mix.

I'd suggest a book called Death to Diabetes if you can check it from your library.

You found something wrong with almost every food that was suggested by another above. I will refrain from posting to your threads from now on.

I'm kinda ticked at tuna. Every can has broth with salt in it. But it IS a cheap high quality protein.

Not to mention mercury.

It's good protein source, but you shouldn't really eat it more than 2-3 times per week.

Ii have a call into my dr to discuss the yoyoing, and other potential issues.

The yoyo effect comes from your eating habits.

If you starve all night and most of the day before you eat or drink something, your BS goes down and sometimes that might be too low for comfort.
When you eat or drink (anything but plain water), it sends your BS higher. And depending on what you eat can send that BS through the roof - which is just as dangerous.
If your BS is too low or too high it can make you feel very giddy and drunk. If it's too far out for your body to cope with, it just shuts down and you go into a coma.
The same effect can happen if your body starts getting too dehydrated - you need to drink fluids.
If you ever start feeling light-headed or drunk and you know it's not because you've been drinking alcohol - take notice and fix the problem (food or drink) or you could be in serious medical shit. This is very serious and it is no joke!!

The trick is to eat small and frequently throughout the day.
If you really can't stand any type of cereal (which is a pity), eat a slice of toast with some of your fresh fruit allowance or some raw veggies - but make a point of eating a breakfast even if you are not hungry.
By doing this instead of the all-at-once food rush in one main meal of the day will also help with your body electrolytes.

To quote from the medical dictionary http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Electrolytes -
"Salts and minerals that can conduct electrical impulses in the body. Common human electrolytes are sodium chloride, potassium, calcium, and sodium bicarbonate. Electrolytes control the fluid balance of the body and are important in muscle contraction, energy generation, and almost every major biochemical reaction in the body."

Having a change of diet can take a bit of getting used to and sometimes we need to think about eating stuff we don't really like.
Add that to a complete change in eating habits is going to feel like climbing a mountain.

To use the phrase that the diabetic expert said to me at the time -
"It's quite simple.... You change what you eat and when you eat or you die. You choose".
That was the choice I was faced with. Change or die is what it boils down to in the end.
Not the words you like to hear. A very harsh but simple truth.
And you won't necessarily die nicely by dropping into a coma and not waking up.
For a lot of diabetics, they lose fingers and toes, hands and feet or whole limbs because of it.
Not to mention renal failure, going blind etc.

I can't tell you any more than what I was told and what I had to do to stay alive.
Now, 10+ years of no meds at all, made it worthwhile.
That doesn't mean I'm cured of diabetes because I'm not.
What I do know is if I stray too far off my (new) lifestyle I will fall down that same old hole I was in.
I certainly don't want to live like that again - no sireee!!
If I hadn't changed everything 11 years ago, I'd have been dead by now or very close to it with serious medical conditions.

Your doctor should have explained all this to you when you were diagnosed as being diabetic.
They should also have given you a diet sheet and refered you to a diabetic specialist or clinic.

You need to make them work for you.
If you don't know something - consult the experts - ask your doctor or specialist.

I always start pulling My hair out when trying to teach people about carbs. For some reason it's really hard for people to understand that just because it's a vegetable and not a twinkie, it can still raise your blood sugar and even make you gain weight.
Essentially leaf veggies (spinach, etc) and flower veggies (brocolli, cauliflower) are low carb but still high in essential nutrients... whereas root veggies (potatoes, onions, carrots, sweet potatoes, beets) and Fruit/seeds from veggies (tomatoes, beans, peas, corn, wheat, oats, etc) are going to be very HIGH carbs...
because THAT's WHERE THE PLANT STORES ITS STARCHES, FOLKS!

Also, don't be afraid of GOOD fats, like those in fish, olives, and nuts (nuts on a limited basis if you are watching carbs). These fats can give you energy as well as help keep your cholesterol down. And as OsideGirl said, you need PROTEIN, so don't leave it out of a meal.

Don't starve yourself either. Going for long periods without eating really DOES mess with your blood sugar and causes cravings, light headedness, etc. Better to "browse" thoughout the day. There is nothing wrong with having 4 or 5 SMALL meals, rather than having 3 LARGE meals.

20 carbs all at once is enough to give ME that "drunk" feeling too...similar to taking a Benedryl, and I'm not even diabetic. I suffered with these spells My entire life until going low-carb, when it went away completely and was replaced by an almost constant state of energy. Only when I return to carb eating (when someone sabotages Me with pasta or bread, or during the holidays...OMG PIE!!!!!) does that drunk, woosey feeling return.

FR~~

Have you seen a registered dietician TFB? When I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes I spent several sessions with a dietician specializing in diabetic diet. I learned a lot about proteins and carbs. Listen to what MAINEiacMISTRESS is telling you. Obviously, she's done some research on this.

Changing one's diet often means learning to include foods we aren't particularly crazy about. You have to find ways to like them. It's a matter of good health and survival.

I grew up with bad eating habits. My mother didn't have time to cook or plan meals and we ate a lot of processed, sugary, fatty foods. After developing a taste for that it's not easy to break away from it. But, you have to do it.

I usually eat somewhere between 50 and 80 grams a day. Plus, I think I'm wheat sensitive. So, when I eat anything like bread or pasta, I get a hang over feeling about an hour later.

Could that be a gluten reaction OG??

Over here, many supermarkets are offering common foods in a "free from" range.
Meaning free from:- gluten, MSG, flavours, preservatives, other E number additives etc.
