I do so hope the Germans loved their "vote" that got them the EURO -

Helmut Kohl has admitted that he 'acted like a dictator' to bring the euro into Germany to replace the beloved D-Mark.

Germany's longest-serving postwar chancellor said that he would have lost any popular vote on the euro by 'an overwhelming majority'.

He said in an interview conducted in 2002 - but only just now published - : 'I knew that I could never win a referendum in Germany. We would have lost a referendum on the introduction of the euro. That's quite clear. I would have lost and by seven to three.'

'The documents that have now been released suggest that the Kohl administration misled both the public and Germany's Federal Constitutional Court,' said news magazine Der Spiegel when they came out last year.

What will the German Volk vote on next?

That is mixing treason and legislation, I don't think that they care about the legislation.

Helmet Kohl was a conservative, he belong to the Christian Democratic Union, some Germans refer to that party as "A bunch of old Nazis)

While I agree that a referendum about the Euro would have been a disaster for Kohl, it was never even remotely an option. We have a representative democracy, not a direct one, and there are no provisions for referendums on the country level. If that is good or bad is up for debate, though.
Kohl wanted the Euro as his legacy, and he was willing to do nearly everything to make his mark in history and see his vision accomplished.
He should have been contend to have been the chancellor to preside over the German re-unification, but he had to share the limelight on that, which noticeably rankled him.

However, in relatively new polls there is an overwhelming majority that wants to keep the Euro, those who want to go back to D-Mark are a minority.

It is interesting though, that this is just now making the news in the US, as it happened last year. The theft of 5 tons of Nutella in Germany however, was reported on your side of the pond on the very same day.

Same as here in The Netherlands... we voted against the EU constitution... a few years later the gouverment signs it anyway... Welcome to the EU we say then... that Continent where nobody gives a shit about its people exept in Switzerland;)
