No, there is just a contingent of Brits who are very anti-United States. It's getting old to be honest.

We aren't anti-United States at all.

Just that some of the US responses are too self-pitying and self-righteous.
Not that I really expected anything different from a predominantly US site.

Please do continue to reduce us (US citizens) to the lowest common denominator.

No different to LL's comment about some of us Brits. [:D]

Touché

We really aren't anti-American.
But sometimes the self-righteous rhetoric does tend to shine through.

Pot meet kettle. This US blasting by the Brits is hysterical really. I have yet to see a Brit on here who isn't self-righteous and never misses an opportunity to diss the US.

The man mentioned in the post does not sound like the 9/11 bombers at all.
The poster stated he was an Israeli.
People who have spent any amount of time in Isreal tend to be much more aware of the potential for terrorism.

It has been a long time since we have had regular bomb drills in this country.
(Thankfully, there hasn't been need for them.)

I do think your quick assumption came across not as racist or nationalist but ignorant: the kind of ignorance many people develop when not exposed to cultures outside of their own.

I wasn't saying that I suspected that the man he was talking about was a terrorist, simply that his comments reminded me of the 9/11 people.

I've been exposed to quite a few cultures outside my own. I've traveled through a good part of Europe, including countries that were formerly under Russian rule, so yes, I do understand other cultures.

The 9/11 pilots were not in this country illegally either.

Could you please let their blood dry on the pavement before you bring politics in to this?

The bullshit point scoring over the corpses began three posts into this thread, sadly.

Peon and Politesub.

Now, please, can we stop this pointless bickering?

Let's fight a little bit more over PURE SPECULATION. I'm sure these people will appreciate your efforts.

And, in that spirit:

As I understand it, the second image depicts a man comforting one of the injured.

These things can bring people together, as well as drive them apart.

Let's hope there's more of the former than the latter.

I'm just playing Devils advocate here.

Much as I agree with your sentiments, when your countrymen go poking their nose into other countries business, kill, maim and blow up their people, send drones out to kill possibly one man and end up killing dozens of innocent women and children.... What else did you really expect??

Did you shed so many tears and felt so repulsed when the Afghans and Pakistanis were murdered and maimed many times by US troops and drones?
I bet you didn't.
You feel such remorse, horror and anger because it's fellow Americans on home soil.

I'm not saying it's wrong.... But just put the boot on the other foot for a second.
They are just retaliating for things that were done to them by the US.
And I don't think it takes much thinking about who the purpetrators were.

I see this all too often from a major proportion of Americans on here and other sites.
It seems it's ok to push your own politics and tread on other people around the world, then gasp in OMG shock horror that sometimes you get blasted back by those you trod on.
Did you really expect them to lay down and just take it?

I am sometimes bewildered at the US state of mind and attitudes.

Just playing devil's advocate here.

I guess you honestly didn't give a shit when the IRA was planting car bombs a few decades back on your soil. I mean, why should you give a damn about your fellow countrymen? The politics of your nation absolutely meant that civilians were just fine as targets and you shouldn't have felt bad at all when explosives were killing people. Not an issue because innocent deaths were just the IRA's sign that they weren't going to just lay down and take it.

Or once, maybe just once, you actually had some sympathy that innocent people were hurt.

Aswad -> RE: Explosions at Boston Marathon (4/15/2013 4:15:09 PM)

I made another thread for the arguing, bickering, and politics (link).

Can we please take everything insensitive there, where it's properly labelled and clearly opt-in?

It will do both but the outcome will undoubtably be a more warlike footing internationally for the US, if it is indeed a terrorist act

And as it happens, I do think just like this.
If the UK (as it has) done just as much damage as the US then I don't flinch when some of ours are killed in mindless bombings over here.
We treat them like worthless shit when we kill their people so I don't expect anything different in retaliation.
The methods may be different but the result is the same.

To feel emotionless is sad, really sad..

It's not sad at all to feel emotionless. If it was, you wouldn't be emotionless. [:D]

I just got home and heard the news... This is a horrendous tragedy my heart goes out to all the victims and their families, the people who were there, the first responders. truly a horrible event.

Jesus, let's hold our horses, eh? It's too soon to say whether this was a terrorist action or that of a US born nutjob. It's not too soon to say that it was horrific and tragic.

A couple of points:
Whenever I use the word ignorant on the forums here, I always mean it in the "not knowing" sense.

I am still not seeing what you are seeing regarding the comments the man made that reminded you of a terrorist.
I think when one grows up in a place where bombings are common-place, it changes how you see things... and when the government takes proactive measures to prevent the easy ways of hiding bombs it permeates the culture one lives in.
I read it as he was commenting on how very different risk is seen in Israel and here.

He was simply stating that risk for harm via trash cans that can easily hide explosives or vehicles (which can carry bigger bombs) in crowded places are not things found in his country.
How is that suggesting terrorism? It seems the opposite to me: how one prevents it from people who experienced it nearly daily for decades.

mnottertail -> RE: Explosions at Boston Marathon (4/15/2013 4:26:56 PM)

I guess I make some fun of the UKers time to time and they make fun of me the USer.

For the most part, if a Brit actually makes fun of anything US, it is the Soccer Rival drunken pissups that we call politics.

Be that as it may, right below most of those Union Jack Lapel pins, are American Flags, we are partners and family in many many ways.   Except for Peon, and he can be excused as he doesn't seem to own a dinner jacket.

I stand with my British friends for the most part in their actual concern for America.

Saudi National Apprehended

Investigators have a suspect — a Saudi Arabian national — in the horrific Boston Marathon bombings, The Post has learned. Law enforcement sources said the 20-year-old suspect was under guard at an undisclosed Boston hospital. It was not immediately clear why the man was hospitalized and whether he was injured in the attack or in his apprehension... In addition, Boston police have has surveillance video of someone bringing multiple backpacks to blast site, according to CBS News.

K.

I know I shouldn't even ask, but it the NYP the only source that is quoting twelve dead instead of two? I know how difficult it is to get any accuracy during an incident of this nature.

TallullahHk -> RE: Explosions at Boston Marathon (4/15/2013 4:31:59 PM)

Boston media is reporting 2 dead, one being an 8 year old child, and 98 injured.

The are NO suspects in custody.
