vincentML -> Is Rush Limbaugh's career going downhill? (5/8/2013 2:43:32 PM)

SOURCE
Or will he rise like the Phoenix?

"El Rushbo is still a giant in the industry, but the impact of slamming Sandra Fluke on his radio show one year ago persists—with some $2.4 million in losses attributed by Dickey to declines in the “syndicated-talk segment.”

Insiders confirm that these declines are primarily due to the ongoing reluctance of national advertisers to attach their name to the toxic talk-radio format that first made Limbaugh famous a generation ago.

“We’re watching the end of right-wing conservative talk radio,” says Jerry Del Colliano, publisher of the radio-industry tip sheet Inside Music Media. “The genre is dying among ratings and dying among advertisers ... Rush is at the end of his career. His constituency is all wearing Depends. And he’s getting himself into trouble he doesn’t need. So can you put Humpty Dumpty back together again? They have been able to improve their advertising picture, but they have not been able to come back.”

“Sandra Fluke was simply the lightning that struck and hit an old building that collapsed,” Colliano says. “She didn’t do it. She helped to bring it down at the end, but it was falling apart on its own.”

[SNIP]

But the larger issue is the declining demographics of the right-wing talk-radio racket. “Look at the millennial generation,” says Colliano. “There’s 80 million of them coming of age. They don’t see color. They don’t see gender. And they’re civic minded: they don’t like bloviating. They don’t like yelling and screaming. So you tell me: how’s right-wing talk radio working for them?”

Your thoughts . . . .

That arrogant Fucktard, I can't wait to see him go. The genre got drunk with power and got all full of itself. Now it is so out of touch and moronic. The rise of apocalypto Beck was the nail in the coffin for me. It meant they went so far hard right they spun around and hit themselves in the ass.

Can't wait to see him choke on a clogged artery

Conservative radio has reduced itself to shouting. They rarely, if ever, present their side with any rationale. I know it is because they have gone so far right there is nothing left, but softening to reasonable soft conservative values would begin to open the debate again

You mean, the one that ate stars for breakfast and almost killed the X-Men?

Or the one that turned into a newly hatched chick?

Gotta watch those classical similes...

Well Rush Limbaugh is in his 60s. But someone younger and more in touch with younger conservatives will absolutely come along to take his place. And while there might not be as much shouting, I'm still going to despise what's being said.....[:'(]

There are younger guys out there,,, lots of shouting still, the genre is dying

Hillwilliam -> RE: Is Rush Limbaugh's career going downhill? (5/8/2013 3:50:41 PM)

He was at his height during the Clinton years.
His "dittohead" "you're one of us or you're one of them" ways have since alientated a lot of listeners and a lot more have died off.

His recruitment is low among younger listeners.

To answer, I'll qoute an old country tune. "like a snowball headed for hell".

He is one of the people responsible for the destruction of the once GRAND Old Party.

If you think Rush is bad I guess you've never heard Andy Dean.

Yup! The GOP is now the fundemental church of America!

Wait... if you think WABC will be happy to see WOR get Limbaugh you really know nothing about how radio works

Lew Dickey, the CEO of WABC parent company Cumulus is trying to deflect blame onto Limbaugh for Cumulus' losses under his his stewardship, plain and simple.

Like politics, all radio is local and driven by small businesses in local markets. Small business owners in local markets LIKE what talk radio is selling, the undivided attention of thinking audiences, who have money and are paying attention to the station. Small businesses also do not want to sponsor, radio talent beating the constant drum of modern American liberal politics. Why should local small businesses advertise with talent who loves Obamacare and tax hikes when they are killing said local small businesses profits?

OH...and the guy is worth $100s of millions... at some point he may just want to retire and roll around in it.

First let me say, I do not consider Rush to be a conservative, he is too bizarre for 90% of the right.

Secondly, I doubt Rush will ever be off the air. I have it on good authority that the same people that cloned Dolly the sheep made six dozen clones of Rush, and they are hooked up with a device that transmits all of his thoughts to their brains so if Rush died, the next clone would be able to start up were the original left off.

As for Glen Beck, he has such a warp view of Christian values and priorities that God is not going to take him, and he is doing such a good job, Satan made him immortal. He can only be killed if his head is cut off while Queen is playing background music.

I wonder if it's just the genre, or the entire medium?

I listen to talk radio, because I usually prefer it to music when I'm driving, and the options are rather limited in my area. When I lived in Columbus, I would listen to sports talk radio. But the only other person I know who listens to political talk radio is my dad.

TricklessMagic -> RE: Is Rush Limbaugh's career going downhill? (5/8/2013 9:08:39 PM)

Closest I ever got to right wing radio was "Bubba The Love Sponge". Limbaugh is annoying, Beck went off the frigging rails I miss Beck being on CNN with Lou Dobbs right behind. I simply elect to drive with the radio off most of the time, it's an act that deserves one's full attention. The hysteria of the talk radio is annoying as all get out. I miss Howard Stern, he was a leftie but he was funny and that's what we all need at times, just a good laugh.

FelineRanger -> RE: Is Rush Limbaugh's career going downhill? (5/8/2013 9:29:19 PM)

I say good riddance to Rush Limbaugh and everyone who followed in his footsteps. How many factually false attacks or flat out cheap shots has he made that he's been allowed to return from? Particularly noxious in the Philly area was his 2003 cheap shot at Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb. And then he gets a pass on that one because he claimed to be hooked on pain pills! Regrettably, I have been subjected to his show on other occasions and have discovered that he is a raving racist and I have no tolerance for such people. Meanwhile, Doug "The Greaseman" Tracht had his whole career pulled out from under him for a single admittedly racist comment and hasn't been heard since.

Interesting side note: My spell check wanted to replace Limbaugh with Limberger. How appropriate!

What did Limbaugh say that was racist? That the media wanted a black QB to do well and that they pumped up McNabb even though it was the defense that carried the team? THAT is racist? Limbaugh didn't make any claim that McNabb was or wasn't anything based on the color of his skin. Limbaugh was claiming that the media, if anything, was acting in a racially discriminating manner, pumping up McNabb solely because of the color of his skin.

How is it that exposing others acting in a racist manner is racist? Is it because the media was making positive claims to a minority? McNabb had his time and was a very good QB. Phillie has been known for their D for a gawd-awful long time.

Your hatred for Rush is clouding your judgment.

If this stupid statement doesn't get him off the show then another one in the future will. But that won't shut him up. There will always be some idiot out there who will want to invite him on their show and in the mean time he will be kicking back enjoying the billions he has already made.

Stargazer301 -> RE: Is Rush Limbaugh's career going downhill? (5/9/2013 4:45:29 AM)

The thing about Limbaugh, Beck, Savage, etc, as well as their counterparts on the other side of the spectrum (yes, there is such a thing as left-wing talk radio, you just don't see it lambasted as often, due to its detractors having little interest in decrying it when not listening is so much simpler) is that they honestly don't care whether you listen because you agree or vehemently disagree with what they say. Even the question of whether they themselves believe what they say is irrelevant. They are not in the business of bringing "truth" or "balance" or any other such prosaic concepts to anyone. They are in the business of MAKING MONEY. What they say means nothing; it is whether or not anyone will pay (in the form of advertising revenue) to listen to them, for any reason.

The much maligned world of professional wrestling probably said it best when noting that the higher ups really didn't care about whom the fans cheered nor booed, "so long as there was an ass every 18 inches" (in the form of paid attendance.)

Actually, when you get right down to it, pro-wrestling, with its "designated" heroes and villains, and the same people profiting off of the works of both, is a damn apt metaphor for the two-party system in general.

You might want to reread the thread before you get too happy. No one is going to flush his head or do anything to the man to hurt him. He will be forced to retire with billions and thousands of idiots will still write and tell him they think he is brilliant. Maybe with all that free time he will write a book. [8D]
