zpenguin -> Trolls (5/20/2013 9:52:19 AM)

So is it just me or does it appear there is an odd amount of trolls here? A troll being someone who only makes negative comments, suggestions, and overall just a rude attitude. I'm on a few different forums and never have I seen it as prevalent as here, minus Youtube comments section of course. This is getting annoying, I notice its mostly Dom types, ok, so since when did being a Dom mean being a dick? For being accepting of all types and walks of life, there sure is a lot of nit-picking. I have seen it happen to many people on the forums here and to myself even. There is a proper way to disagree without having a bitchy attitude. I am sure this will skimmed over with a fine tooth comb and every misspelling and punctuation error will be pointed out along with every person who just is bored and wants to get a sense of empowerment will comment on this. BUT I can't hold my tongue about it anymore. Anyway My point here is quit TROLLING!! Nobody likes it, its annoying. It doesn't make you cool, or look smarter, it just makes you look like a dick. Plus Im sure this will get one of these people as well.[image]http://i1311.photobucket.com/albums/s674/az49090/yuno_zpsc849100e.jpg[/image]

FelineRanger -> RE: Trolls (5/20/2013 10:04:28 AM)

I just have one question: Are you the pot or the kettle?

zpenguin -> RE: Trolls (5/20/2013 10:07:01 AM)

Check my profile and my posts before making assumptions. And as for the pot reference, its an observation that is true statement. so there u have it.

I think it depends on how one defines "troll." There's a difference between a "flame" and a "troll." Someone with a bitchy attitude or being a dick might be inclined to flame, but not troll. "Troll" comes from "trolling," a synonym for "baiting." There might be those who try to intentionally bait others into an argument, and then there are those who are just naturally argumentative and can't help themselves.

To me, "trolling" seems more calculating and intentional, whereas "flaming" just occurs naturally over the course of a debate when people's dander might be raised. That especially happens in discussions of politics and religion, but it can happen with any subject. It's unfortunate that people get angry and say regrettable things, whether over the internet or in real life. It would be nice if people could exercise more restraint and self-control, just as it would be nice if people could be more kind and compassionate. But humanity is fucked. We're all doomed. At least, one can get some comfort in knowing that even all the assholes on the internet are equally doomed. [;)]

Rawni -> RE: Trolls (5/20/2013 10:33:23 AM)

So... mostly dominants are the trolls? I am not sure I agree with your description of what a troll is, but... okay... we will go with it. I will have you know that we have and have had some of the snarkiest, smartest submissive posters around here that could unbalance your conclusion. Hell, you may even get a sampling of it right on this thread. One persons snark/bitch/whine is another persons enjoyment.

Though I don't always like what I see, read or think is happening... first of all... I don't know everything, I don't always see clearly or it all and I don't have to read or take part. If I think someone got a raw deal or is misunderstood, I am not afraid to say something and I don't hold it in. I could even send them an email. After that, it really isn't my business unless I make it my business. It is no skin off my well proportioned nose. [;)]

You can stomp your feet, you can try to make improvements by simply being nice to someone you think everyone is mean to, you can lash out... you have choices. So does everyone else. If you really think... REALLY THINK, that this site and forum doesn't represent society in general... you may have cloudy eyes or selective viewing, in my opinion of course.

A troll being someone who only makes negative comments, suggestions, and overall just a rude attitude.

In Internet slang, a troll (pron.: /ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is someone who posts inflammatory,[4] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[5] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

^
not the definition you are using. Here's a thought: report any post you believe violates the forum guidelines, and hide any poster whose opinions do not contribute to your happiness and growth.

OsideGirl -> RE: Trolls (5/20/2013 11:20:56 AM)

There is another forum that I am somewhat active on.

The owner of that forum posted this view and I think it's a good one.

"This is a privately owned website. Think of this of my living room. It's my house, my rules and you don't get to demand changes to how I run my house. You are a guest here.

If you do not like the rules or choose not to follow my rules, you will be asked to leave or be escorted out of my house."

I'm continually amazed at people that think the site owes them something other than entertainment, those that think the Mods work for them as opposed to the site owner and think that it's okay to demand changes.

LadyPact -> RE: Trolls (5/20/2013 11:39:37 AM)

I don't know if I agree with the way that you are using the term or the group where you seem to find the greatest percentage of offenders. There have been a few times during the last month that I've honestly felt for the folks who participate on the Gorean forums and not because of the old perception that non Goreans were shredded there. Since there is such little traffic on that forum, perhaps the sh*t stirrers just seem to stand out more.

(Which is ok. I'm used to the same thing being said in regard to leather folk.)

Rule -> RE: Trolls (5/20/2013 12:05:03 PM)

I sometimes click the bottom-leftest button on a post. I have got the posts of over 90 nicks on Hide now.

zpenguin -> RE: Trolls (5/20/2013 12:47:32 PM)

[8|] well if thats the type of conversation you enjoy cool to each their own. And yes I expected for rants, definitions, punctuation corrections, and like comments. Doesn't really bother me. I stated an opinion and I stand by it.
Don't misinterpret this, if I do state something and someone brings an opposing view that may be different or CONSTRUCTIVE criticism it is well acknowledged and thought is put into it. There is a big difference in what my OP is pertaining to and a debate.
Thats bout all I have to say about it.

DesFIP -> RE: Trolls (5/20/2013 1:39:10 PM)

The fact that I do not suffer fools gladly does not make me a troll.
You're giving off the feeling that you expect everyone here to adore each other simply because we're on the same site. That doesn't happen anywhere I know of.

Hell even in a PTA meeting where everyone is there for the same reason, people will disagree. And people being people, sometimes those disagreements are loud and carry emotional overtones.

Rawni -> RE: Trolls (5/20/2013 1:47:13 PM)

PTA meetings? OMG... Even I run from those! Never again! [:D] Unless I can do this...

I understand this, but I do believe that there is a symbiotic relationship between the site owners and the users. There is a reason that they've opened up the forums for our use. That reason is debatable, sure. But the fact is, it's here, so someone, somewhere, wants us to use it. If they want us to use it, then it should be at the very least, habitable (for lack of a better word - typing this on the fly).

I would feel differently if the site were only for us to view. (Well, even then, I would argue that there is a give and take.) But once we're invited to engage, then our engagement has some sort of value to the site owners. In order to keep us so engaged, it would be in their best interest to hear what we have to say. Does the individual complaint garner much impetus to change? No. Everybody's got their individual preferences and peeves. But on a larger scale, a shift toward one preference or another should be noted by the site owners. They may decide that they want to make changes and not risk losing participants, or they may decide that the risk isn't worth the trouble. But I don't believe that using the site is a privilege. They put it out here for us to use. We want to use it. Though I would think the benefits ultimately tilt in favor of the owners (otherwise why would they do it?), it is still a joint effort.

Exactly. One person's "trolling" is another person's conversation. I really, really fucking hate it when messages and threads disappear because someone else didn't like what someone said. It hasn't happened lately all that much because things have been a bit flat, but I've no doubt it will happen again. Give it about eight days.

I agree. But, I believe there is a difference between a group asking for something and some of the people that have been here recently stomping their feet because the site isn't run to their liking.

This ^^^
In my opinion only, the flatness of the discussions is at least partly (maybe largely) caused by the selective disappearance of posts, threads, and posters.

I didn't see that the OP was criticizing the site owners or how it's run. It seemed like it was being addressed at the other forum participants. I don't think the OP was suggesting that the owners of this site are trolling their own forum. I don't even know who the owners are. For all I know, the OP could be the owner of the site telling everyone to shape up. [;)]

BlkTallFullfig -> RE: Trolls (5/21/2013 12:15:28 AM)

Hey zpenguin,
I don't know what your experience has been with TROLLS in general, and lord knows, some of them would be better off just getting lost.

When I saw this thread, it actually placed me in a nostalgic state, and made me miss a great poster of the past, who called himself "FukinTrolll."
He was actually a fun, and interesting humant being, that I miss, and hope is doing well.

Please come back ""FukinTroll
Sir Slurpsalot""

garyFLR -> RE: Trolls (5/21/2013 1:54:51 AM)

I know I haven't been here long, but I haven't seen much in the way of Trollism, I admit I haven't been to the Gorean forum as it doesn't interest me in the slightest, but in cases where posters have had a good hiding, I've felt they've deserved it. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places [:)].

theshytype -> RE: Trolls (5/21/2013 5:57:49 AM)

I only know of Fukintroll from the tap, tap, tap thread I just recently got to read. Yeah, he was hilarious.

As for real trolls, they don't bother me. I try to avoid conflict so it's unlikely I'll engage with one. At times, they provide a little entertainment.
