I thought she did use the N word. When a black man held her up at a bank?

She said so in her deposition. She also said she said it after that but denied using it the time the plaintiff claims she did.

It wasn't so much the idea of having waiters wear white gloves but the idea that having black men in tuxedos and white gloves so the wedding would have a "southern plantation" theme that made it an issue.

I know, I was referring to the "hand washing" comment.

I should have edited that to say "when one accepts or perceives that they are a role model they should be held responsible for their words and actions"

So... if you aren't accepting money and/or have no personal perception of yourself as a role model are you off the responsibility hook and can you just say whatever you think? None of those things personally apply to me. Would it be okay if I echoed Deen's statements and sentiments?

Off the responsibility? No, I didn't say that.
Do you hold everyone accountable for everything?

I was holding paula accountable with my statement.
I do not condone racism.

For argument's sake alone, if you didn't know any better, I'd either ignore you for remarks like those if I felt you couldn't be reached, or if I felt you were approachable, I'd say something.

My statement was about the level of entitlement that these people reach making them feel like they are above reproach or remorse.

There are people who still use the N word these days. If a white man uses it, people condemn him for it but if a black man uses it, it is part of their culture. Double standard, people...

I still get upset is someone calls Native Americans dirty drunk injuns. We did not have alcohol until white man introduced it to us.

I give her credit for being honest. The south is changing, for the better, and many who used racial slurs years ago would not dream of doing it now. The generation Paula came up in was different than it is today, "normal" was different, and views about race were different. As long as someone grows and learns, I refuse to hold their past against them.

That said, I wonder, if everyone was as honest as Paula was, what would happen if we asked everyone of all colors if they had ever referred to someone of a different color in a derogatory way.

I suspect that, if this were done and everyone guilty lost their job, we would not have much of a workforce left, nor anyone to play sports, hell we would probably go back to the middle ages.

I just feel that she is being judged very harshly on something, because she refused to lie.

She's losing a job because the public got to see the real woman, the one that called another woman a "piece of pussy" and talked about holding a "southern plantation" themed wedding amongst other bad behavior. If you read the whole deposition you will not feel so warm and fuzzy about her.

That "piece of pussy" was a former manager who was having sex with under-aged servers.
I might have called her much, much worse if she had been working for me.

I highly doubt there are many that have never used a racial slur at least once in their lives,so I am not one that thinks Paula should be burned at the stake for a comment she has apologized for.Do I think Paula did right using a racial slur? No...I don't but I've seen others using racial slurs get free passes.I got this pic in my FB feed yesterday that gave me pause to think.

Good point. And hell, a point I'm always making that everyone here either flat out ignores or gets pissy about is the number of white folks who refer to people of their own race as "trash," "crackers" and "hillbillies." Bigoted hate speech. It's so funny, though!

When did she say that? Is this another one of those she did something 10 years ago and now people have their shorts in a wad over it? I have never been a fan of hers but I do roll my eyes a bit when the media goes nuts over something that happened years and years ago.

We just lamented the passing of Jeanne Stapleton.

http://www.collarchat.com/m_4457622/tm.htm

How many racial slurs were uttered on that program and how many tens of millions of dollars made?

But we LOVED them (and still do).

I don't see how wanting them to wear white gloves is such an awful thing to say, but the racial slur was out of line.

She wanted to the wedding to have a feel of pre-civil war, plantation feel....which refers to slavery.

It was in 1980. The woman suing her is white. I cant stand her show for a lot of reasons but this is really crazy.

Pardon, Hillwilliam. The whole point Carrol O'Conner was making with the Archie Bunker character was ... Archies' bigotry. It's what we were laughing at. And every time we laughed at Archie Bunkers totally unfounded but cherished beliefs, we made the World a better place by becoming less like Archie and more like Carrol.

You suggest the dramatic bigotry should have been removed from the program, or perhaps that bigotry is okay, when the program removed the actual bigotry from our lives. The difference is, Ms. Deen wasn't joking. On the contrary, she was assuming you agree with her. To say that differently, Carrol was removing bigotry from the Earth, and Paula was asking it to stay. And now she has cause to think about how much other people enjoy that.

What is regrettable is that this doesn't happen more often. Both the Deen fiasco, and socially progressive comedy gems like "All in the Family". Change doesn't happen by itself.

I'm saying that show would not be allowed on TV today.

I agree, there's no way All in the family would fly now a days.
My thing is, I could have forgiven her if it was just a racial slur. (Not forgotten, but forgiven) However, the whole white gloves and watermelon shit, took the cake for me.
