I'm an expert. What's the problem?

In my experience people touting their own supremacy are those who feel they have something to prove. I have been into the scene for my entire adult life and I still feel odd when someone asks me to quantify my experience. MENSA go on about how they are so smart but really they only test three or so types of intelligence compared to the serious psych tests who test for 12 types I think. Imho MENSA is a club for fratricidal adoration, why would that even be of interest?
It's all about perception and how you compare it to your own experiences. I took a class in programming once, it was a one year class. After six months I was well into an advanced class they don't even teach and the teacher told me he couldn't teach me any more and gave me tasks/probkems to solve that he were unable to solve himself. He had plenty of experience but I was better at it then him. Btw I spent a substantial amount of time teaching my classmates math as well since the teachers were busy with other things. Does this make me an expert or what?
I see people doing things for a lifetime and they still suck at it, other people can master a skill in a few short months. Who is the expert?
Experience is important but it's not the only thing.

yes. it creates expertise in the following other areas:

1) How the World is Going to Hell because of Disrespectful Young People and what Ought to be Done About It.
2) discrepancies between george rr martin's writings and the hbo "game of thrones" series.
3) best way to squeeze into leather pants for which you've become rather too plump (butter. lots of butter. which is also how you grew too plump in the first place)
4) world war ii, specifically Where Hitler Went Wrong
5) care and maintenance of ornamental swords, knives, and ninja throwing stars

Be careful of so called experts look at the word
Ex - as in deceased
sPerts - as in drip under pressure.

But seriously Know one knows everything about a given subject, if you're an expert you know this and should be willing to say so, this for me is the mark of a true expert.

Most people are experts in something. And most often the ones with the less technical expertise are experts in more important things. We all come from different experiences. One thing that I would like to say is don't discount the young either. I always think about the World Series of Poker. On the first day the average age is 47 years. The tournament lasts 7 days and by day three, the average age is 27 years old. And also, I would like to add that "experts" should always be able to learn. A mechanic should be able to assimilate new knowledge and not cling to what they already know.

Also, the more you know, then the more that you know that you don't know. This always seems to be true. And... if you think that you know everything then that is a problem. Because a smart person can see all the angles and will always be in turmoil. Not like George Bush who didn't seem to be in any turmoil about going into Iraq.
